Niiiice! Well done. Like that you used lacquer thinner on the sidewalls. I was wasting time sanding them.
@ClayKemp3 жыл бұрын
Really strong rubbing alcohol works too. But the lacquer thinner softens the tire up just enough the decal sticks better. But it depends on the tire too. Some tires are just too slick and need some sort of clear first otherwise it will silver on you.

Hi Clay! Really love your work! I’m planning a detailed build of the old Monogram Uno Buick and want to the same thing with these exact same wheels. My questions are, why did you paint the “O” in Goodyear, yellow? The three yellow marks on the rim edge, are those wheel weight locations? Also, other that the “LF” would this be the exact same procedure on all four wheels? Thanks!

@ClayKemp3 жыл бұрын
I was confused by your comment so I had to go back and re-watch it myself. it was the same tire, I think what happened was I wasn't happy with the first "23" so I wiped it off and painted a better one. It was still the same tire. Just new number painted on.

Clay do you have a how to for removing kit lugs nuts so I can replace them with brass nuts to move remove able wheels. I tried a dremel but, it left scars that were not easy to fill.
@stephenirvin4426 Жыл бұрын
Hi! those wheels look killer. A couple of questions: why put the wheel in before spraying the flat. Would'nt it be simpler to spray before putting the wheels in and avoid masking the wheel? I'm not a NASCAR guy, what is the yellow/chrome on the wheels for. Would valve stems make them pop a bit more? I make mine with craft wire.

wheel weights.... although it's kinda funny to have 2 of them on the same side, oriented like that.

The newer Salvino kits have smooth sidewalls. Or if you are using the older tires, juts flip them over. The back side is usually smooth.

Hi Clay, would you mind explaining what each of the markings mean? Especially where it looks like you were painting wheel weights.
@ClayKemp3 жыл бұрын
The yellow on the wheel first simulates the glue they used to use to hold the wheel weights on besides the little band over the rim edge. The white lines just show where a wheel weight is (was) located in case they fall off.

I’m Confused on painting little Yellow lines on the rim, and then painting over them In silver? Can someone explain?
@ClayKemp3 ай бұрын
The yellow simulates the glue they used to use to hold the weights on. The silver is the actual wheel weight itself.

Nice video ! I do have a question. When you brush the decal with Micro-Sol (the hotter red bottle), if the decal wrinkles after applying it -- do you do anything ? Or will it flatten out as it dries ? Thanks!
@ClayKemp3 жыл бұрын
Correct, usually it will level off on its own. I will place the tires under my desk lamp and the heat from the bulb is usually enough to get it to shrink itself down.
@jefffritsche99743 жыл бұрын
@@ClayKemp Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried this over the weekend and did not have very good luck. I used Micro Set when applying the decals to the tire and let that dry for 1 hour. Then I applied a coat of Micro Sol over the decals and set the tires aside. The next morning I'm seeing little wrinkles in the clear carrier film between the letters -- it didn't flatten out. I tried applying a bit more Micro Sol to one of them, but it caused the edges to "lift" and curl up. :-( I'm wondering if I should not have waited an hour before applying the Micro Sol ? Or maybe some heat (i.e. low setting on hair dryer) is needed when you apply the Micro Sol ? I'm probably going to have to strip these decals off and start over again. Thanks for any help/advice you could give.
@ClayKemp3 жыл бұрын
@@jefffritsche9974 Sorry you had trouble Jeff! It may depend on your tires too. On this set here, I think they were newer Salvino tires, they were more of a softer black plastic, so once I cleaned them, they were tacky enough to get the decals to bite too. But on like the older Monogram Nascar tires, you just about have to clear them first. I use any clear lacquer from the can. Something like Tamiya TS-13 works well. I'm guessing your sidewalls were just too slick for the decals to grab on to. Give them a shot of clear, then try to decal again. Then hit them with the dull coat.
@jefffritsche99743 жыл бұрын
@@ClayKemp Hi thanks for taking the time to reply. Yeah the tires I tried it with were the older '80s and 90's Monogram kit tires. I've had the same advice from several others -- spray a coat of gloss clear lacquer on them first -- before decals. I also tested with a couple of Salvinos JR NASCAR kit tires and had the same poor results. I went ahead and sprayed the same clear flat that you used in the video on them and the entire "Goodyear" decal had a "frosted" look -- over the letters and the clear film. I'm using Powerslide decals from Mikes Decals (they always are top shelf) -- so I doubt it's the decals. But others have commented that unless you spray clear gloss before decals, the decals will "sliver" when the flat is sprayed over them. So -- I'll try that next (on both types of tires) -- spray with clear gloss Tamiya lacquer and then decal. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to this. Regards.
@jefffritsche99743 жыл бұрын
@Clay Kemp - Spraying the Monogram tires with Tamiya gloss clear lacquer first and then applying the Goodyear decals (using Micro Set and low heat from a hair dryer) worked great. I was able to then spray them with the Mr Hobby flat and they look great. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my comments !

Quick question, you painted the “O” yellow, was that specific to the team, or would the do that to quickly know which was left side and which was right side? And when did they start doing this? Thanks.

I'm not sure of the exact reason they did that. I kept seeing it showing up in reference pictures, so I tried to duplicate it.
