Having been in a Nascar car in Talladega, I can tell you, that most of these are not any of the drivers fault. You have an extremely limited field of view because of the Seat, the 3-point seatbelts, the rollcage, no side mirrors as well as the helmet. You literally have a 90 degree field of view of what's in front of you. Most of your directions come from a spotter at the pit crew. Without that team member, it would be chaos on the track every race. They make split second decisions for the entirety of the race and sometimes they are bad ones. Also when people see crashes in Nascar, they often say, well... if it was me, I'd be able to correct the car and keep driving. Understand something buddy, these guys are veteran "RACING" drivers. You have a normal driving license, in terms of skill, they are a million miles ahead of you. Hollywood blockbusters and reality is very different, it is IMPOSSIBLE, to have a car that spins out at over 200miles an hour, brought back under control. They are going sooo fast, that some of them even lift off the ground. What these guys risk and do, is very impressive. And I admire them for it.

Here’s a man who knows what he’s talking about.... what? 3-point harness you say? That’s interesting, they’ve been five or six point harnesses (depending on space frame construction) for a few decades now. My car on my drive has a three point ‘harness’, it’s called a seatbelt. NASCAR drivers are undoubtedly talented but they make plenty of schoolboy errors, I’m not close to being their equal in racing terms but even I can see that some of the pit entry attempts are hamfisted at best. Commentators saying ‘it’s a difficult pit entry’ is just lame, they’ve been there for 3 or 4 days, they will have walked or cycled the track, they are PROFESSIONAL drivers FFS, don’t kid yourself, they fuck it up and on occasions are as dumb as rocks.

I can't help but be amazed with the pit crew. They have to stand at the ready and wait for the car, quickly jump in and fuel up/change tires, and even when something happens like that last clip, they often just get right back up to continue the stop.

The crowd for all of them should be a wake up moment for the NASCAR powers that be. Once upon a time, families would will their Bristol tickets to a family member because they were impossible to buy. Check out the stands the last few years at Bristol. It looks like the track employees are all that is sitting in the stands. Then consider how many seats have been completely removed at tracks to avoid the empty seat look. They seem to be totally deaf to fans voicing the reasons that they have stopped showing up.
