Phil Ward did the right thing in a way, the track was covered in oil so he deliberately interrupted the start to get a clean up crew, it could have been really bad.

The way he went about it was incredibly dangerous though. That's the reason he was punished for it.

@@leonkernan Presumably they didn't have in-car radio or anything like that, so it was the most expedient way. If the countdown hadn't started, then none of the other cars would be moving, and him moving out of position would prevent it then being triggered. Even if it did, the resulting accident would have been relatively low speed. Plus it's a failure of the track marshals and admin to make sure that the track surface is in a safe and suitable condition for use. Seems like a classic case of shooting the messenger and using the letter of the rules to hang someone when they didn't have any other choice in order to prevent what could possibly have been a huge fatal accident. As for the commentators having a dig about him having "caused" a bigger danger due to the back markers having a false start... come on. If they can't see what's happening on the track in front of them, and that like twenty other cars aren't going anywhere, and there's one out of place that's driven to the front, even if the lights HAVE changed, that's not his failure, it's theirs. Seems they hadn't got up to any significant speed though and were able to avoid the stopped traffic and each other all the same, so it probably wasn't even all that bad.

6:16 - there are yellow flags everywhere and a car parked on the grid insisting the start be aborted....and the back third of the grid just starts racing anyway? That is possibly one of the stupidest things I have ever seen.

@@StarSonata10 Basically the guy that pulled to the front of the grid is the owner and the runner of that racing category Phil Ward. He's unhappy of the track conditions on the formation lap complaining there's still oil on the race track at turn one and these cars don't have a team radio or radio communication to or from race control. He's trying to hold the start till they make the changes to the race track into a more desirable condition but the rest of the field aren't facing the start lights as the massive car grid bends around the final turn. I guess the amount of yellow flags waved mean that there was stalled cars on the start line and this was their queue to go.

Yeah, as unfortunate as it is, it was explained pretty well by iambennyboy. The biggest issue with Queensland Raceway is it is very much designed for a grid of 24 V8 Supercars.... So when you have 30+ Aussie Racing Cars, the facilities are severely inadequate to see the starting signals. Usually, if you see yellow flags flying like that, it is usually a warning about a stalled car on the track after the race has been signalled to start, so there was a dangerous assumption that the race was under way, it wouldn't have been until they finally came around that they noticed the Race Abort orange signals on the light that they realised what was really happening. Modifications have been made to the race start procedure these days to indicate that all Race Abort signals are to be lights only, with the line flags to only be used to indicate a stalled vehicle
