He saved his own life by calling on NASCAR to improve the roll cage after his 2009 Talladega crash. Twice, technically, because in the 2013 Spring Talladega race Kurt Busch flipped on top of him and almost killed him if it weren’t for that roll bar upgrade. ps made before i even watched the video just knew from the top of my head

Here is another example of Newman did not want to get lapped. In 2017 at Dover Chase Elliott was looking for his first win having led 138 laps but got stuck behind the 31, causing Kyle Busch to catch him and take the win.

What made Newman unique was he wasn't necessarily the toughest of all time, but the toughest of his time. Back 30+ years ago Dale Sr., Davey Allison, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace and others would have big crashes and get injured and still drive their cars in the following weeks, Newman kept that attitude alive at a time no one else really did.

I met Newman at Lime Rock Park a couple weeks ago. He and many other former NASCAR, IndyCar, and F1 drivers were there to run the SpeedTour All Star Race in conjunction with Trans Am. He and his co-driver won the race, surprising as Newman wasn’t known as a road course ace in his time.

It's been said that if you ask any driver in the garage to pick the person you'd want to have your back in a fight every driver would pick Ryan Newman. He's a tough son of a gun but an extremely smart and humble guy. I think it was Joey Logano who said that he got clipped by Newman during a race and sent into the wall. He said he was irate and was ready to have words with whoever wrecked him. When Logano found out it was Newman, his demeanor quickly changed and said well he probably didn't do it.

It took a car stricking his helmet at ~190 mph to injure him...then literally not two days later, he walks out of the hospital. Now he owns that car and helmet like one of his trophies. And even though the new car spooked him, he still hops in it from time to time and is hunting a modified championship. Think he was tough to pass in NASCAR? Watch him race those modifieds lol
