Great shoot from shifting technique presented by Kasey Kahne. Amazing fast footwork.

You can see coming out of three he gets an enormous run because of the downshift. It gives him some extra torque and some extra speed off the corner

I think because you aren’t bogging your motor down as much and keeping the RPMs up, aka rev matching.

@@xkingdre2xbdude are you serious? Rev matching with a dog box transmission means you can shift without touching the clutch, but nobody can shift without touching the gear lever unless they are a wizard😂 The transmission doesn’t automatically know when to shift a gear and then can even execute the force and the motion on it’s own.. It would be the same as shooting a dear without a bullet in the chamber, impossible. Did you ever drive a manual car in your life? Or are you still a little kid that doesn’t even have a drivers license yet? Both is fine and nothing to be ashamed about, but don’t spread misinformation on KZbin and embarrass yourself dude. He wrote that comment because the commentary is completely off with what you see on your screen. If you can’t experience it yourself, you should better watch some videos. First on how a regular manual gearbox functions and how you use it and then a video about what a synchronizer ring is and what a dog is in a transmission and why both have the same function, but execute it very differently. Then how a dogbox works and how you can use it without the clutch from everything but standstill if you just lift for upshifting ne blip the throttle for downshifting (that’s the rev matching you talk about, it’s only necessary on downshifts in non synchronized transmissions)

Something taken away by the Next Gen car. The road variants of the cars have nothing in common with the new gearbox they use. NASCAR just wanted the transaxle design to make hybrid and EV adoption easier. Long live the H-pattern 4 speeds in every series below cup. At least those series still shift like this at Pocono.

How can they shift without using the clutch, at those speeds? In my VW, I could shift into higher gear, without the clutch, only if the RPM were at a specific range. "Synced". So where Burton says their clutches are not needed, is that because the drivers shift/downshift at a certain rpm? On the other hand, you wouldn't think it is NOT syncing. Since he has to "blipp"the throttle to rev match. So basically my question is: How the hell do they pull it in-and-out of gear without the transmission exploding or the engine blowing up?
@TheOz915 жыл бұрын
This is mainly due to NASCAR transmissions are not "regular" manual transmissions. The teeth that connect the shafts to the gears resemble more in sequential boxes with straighter cut gears that are much beefier than in your VW (or in my Honda, or any car), and with fewer teeth. These are known as "dogboxes" because they use dog clutches to engage into gear rather than the helical cut gears found in most road cars. So, yes, they shift and downshift at certain rpm, or close enough. Technically, both of us can shift and downshift without a clutch since regular manuals have synchronizers. Downshifting can be achieved without grinding by gently push the stick into gear as you blip the throttle (as far as I know; I never actually achieved this in fear of breaking my tranny). In a stock car, this can be done so much quicker because it has that dogbox. I hope that answers your question.

@@TheOz91 why does he use the clutch to get into 4th? And not to downshift?
@chasemiller79744 жыл бұрын
@@juliom3775 When you push in the clutch to upshift it brings the rpms down farther to rev match (unless he shifted slower). When downshifting he just has to blip the throttle to rev up the engine which he does in neutral as he slips it into 3rd.

Why does he use cluthch to get into 4th?
@chasemiller79744 жыл бұрын
He's rev matching, on oval tracks like the Tricky Triangle here, their gear ratios are far apart from each other. On road tracks like Sonoma, you'll notice they don't use the clutch, that's because the gear ratios are close enough together to keep the rpms nearly the same when shifting. Like they were talking about, not using the clutch causes strain to the drivetrain.

No the whole point of NASCAR has always been to keep as many things mechanical as possible. The funny thing is, because they've mastered that mechanical machining and assembly skillset during the time period when race electronics were fidgety and hard to work with throughout the 2000s and 2010s, now that motorsport-caliber ECUs are commonplace and standardized well enough, transitioning over to sequentials and flat shifting and such will actually be much LESS of a problem.
