This is the first dyno run of a real performance engine that I've seen where they didn't slam the throttle from full to shut-off in 0.001 second causing the whole engine to twist nearly off the mount. Good job.

Really neat to see air fuel ratio sensors for each cylinder. On the computer it’s the 8 bars next to each other, safe air fuel ration is green, yellow is lean, and then goes red when he lets out. They are targeting 12-12.5 AFR

In short you would need a single plane intake manifold, an extremely precisely balanced rotating assembly with lightweight forged rods and pistons with low drag rings and strong wrist pins, a huge solid roller cam with intake duration specs over 260 degrees at .050” lift, and some badass heads that flow over 350cfm. To build an engine like this yourself you’re still looking at over $10k

Well past 1,000 on a very conservative tune. NA it’s capable of a solid 900+. They’re nuts. Though you must consider this is built entirely for natural aspiration. Some cars are made to breathe the same uncompressed air you and I breathe, just like god intended.

It’s called the restrictor plate by nascar and it’s almost like a massive throttle body spacer that sits under the intake mani allowing the shorter rods to use push more air / fuel in the combustion chamber enabling higher speeds since the compression ratio is kinda like a 2 stroke dirt bike than a trail riding 4 stroke , much more wound up giving both better throttle response and keeping a strong rpm level through the gears instead of dropping off quicker just more efficient use of air and gas compression in the 2 valve per cylinder nascar engines. This cones with twisting and jerking of the block due to so much tourqe those v8 throw out because of sacrificing long time durability with heavier parts something they don’t have to worry about since they use a new engine every race or most well known companies with the money due. Believe when anasxar race is over that engine is warped in all sorts of ways but using lighter parts shorter rods not helpful in everyday driver but Is a devil on the track, those engines are meant to preform wide open upwards of 10k rpms for 500 miles which on a designer stand pint dosnt make a whole lotta since but when they on that track it damn sure makes a whole lotta since to me lol. Stock v8 that produce 800 and up HP is AMERICA and it aches my bones when ppl say it’s just a bunch of cars doing circles for hours. So much more than tgat it’s our fricken birth right to go fast and mess shit up. Sry been drinking all night and just felt like ramblin. well,typically most are built to run flat out for no more than 1,000 miles unfortunately EDIT:but i suppose if you took extra good care of it you might get 1,250-1,500 miles without having to replace critical engine components,but this would basically mean giving it a full look-over,fluid checks pretty much tearing it down piece by piece after every time you drive it,which obviously would be very time consuming...but if you're that dedicated and patient (and have the know how) i said go for it,if you need more info just message me privately :) i'll tell you everything i know about them :D

I think it's based on a Chevy small block but Toyota does not use it in their cars or trucks because it is a 2 valve pushrod motor. it's only use for Nascar. all the guts like pistons, valves, crank and intake are all aftermarket probably Chevy specs. the block and heads are made by Toyota of America only probably in Alabama some where.

It also has bearings based on a Honda **Gasp** NASCAR engines, regardless of make are largely spec engines built within a very tight set of regulations. Rod bearings are Honda, Crank bearings are Ford, bore spacing is based on both Ford and Chevy, heads are largely Ford with Chevy sprinkled in... Don't like it? Don't watch, but then you cant watch WRC, F1, NHRA etc. Professional racing has largely abandoned ingenuity in place of specs and "competitive balance"

The same time period that tube frames and the mixing of engine technology became the norm is exactly the time period it began to climb in popularity. NASCAR's problem is they forgot their roots and the fans who made them what they were. The people who pushed NASCAR out of Southern markets based on fans changing tastes in sports along with the 1994 MLB Strike backlash are what caused what you described. Fans in the 60-70's could have given shakes a piss what bearings or bore spacing engines had. Toyota built this engine, like it or not based on the SAME specs Ford and Chevy use.

Manny Hysten When the drivers have to race to amuse the crowd and not display pure driving ability and the mechanics cannot use ingenuity the racing gets pretty boring. I've been watching racing all sorts of racing since about 1960 but today's racing is pretty boring and I rarely bother watching more than the first lap. Over here in Europe the F1 drivers have whined about having to brake or turn corners and now they can run as wide as they want as the corners have been widened so much. Luckily there is still plenty of car rallying on forest and hill roads to separate the men from the boys while the Isle of Man TT race is the pinnacle of bike handling. We don't want to go back to see Joe Weatherly killed by a solid wall or Bill Vukovich flying over the rail but I'm sure in those days the racers earned their money and made a good show for the spectators.

I love noisy engines, but I can't help myself from thinking how complicated and inefficient they are. An AC induction motor of this same power output would be very quiet and have one moving part. Electric cars are the future, but I will miss the noise and smell of gas engines.

You said it right: they are the future. For now, the present, the only efficient way of moving vehicles is using fossil power. Electric engines give instantaneous power and torque in a silent way, but for short amounts of time when not permanently plugged in. That's the very very major disadvantage, that a 150km autonomy isn't even near acceptable. If we were to consider that it has to charge 4 times more than it takes to drive those km, electric cars aren't reliable and worth buying. You can say that we can buy and use then inside the city for short distances, but i say that's even worse. Let's say that 1 in 10 people will be able to buy one of these bad boys and drive them ONLY inside the city. What does that mean? Over-agglomeration of our cities that already are full. It means an increase of 10% in the number of cars, which already isn't small. Yes, you'd say that the same number of cars will be on the road at any given time, and you'll be right from a mathematical pov, but in reality, those cars meant to be used for long distance trips have to be parked somewhere, which means taking a lot of valuable space and putting cars in it. If you managed to read up to this point, i advise you to keep on going for a few more rows, because i have an off-topic opinion. IMO, the future will never be in electric cars if we don't invent some sort of special battery that will be able to store the same efficient energy but in a 50% or more volume and will be able to charge in a matter on tens of minutes, to make it worth considering as an everyday-allroads car. To be realistic, the only reliable fuel for the future cars is yet to be discovered, but it will most certainly be some sort of fast-and-cheap-to-produce-biodiesel capable of burning as clean as possible and at least as efficient as gasoline. Oh, and it has to be compatible with old-gen engines and require as-little-to-no modifications possible in order for it to be used by the masses. For the near future, we shouldn't really worry about oil shortage, but it's price. Theoretically, we should be able to use it without problems for the next 50 years at least. I think that's plenty of time to develop an alternative. I'm confident both you and me will not live to miss the sound and smell of internal combustion engines.

As you stated, currently we lack any form of battery technology that will make electric cars feasible in the foreseeable future. I'll throw in the FACT that there is possibly far more than a hundred years supply (perhaps even three hundred) of petrochemical fuels available so conversion isn't a necessity cuz ya gotta know climate change is a hoax: how does paying higher taxes effect the weather? eh? Just know that so-called biodiesel is on a par with the pseudoscience of growing corn to produce ethanol. I'll attempt to explain it this way... Currently we humans way access to 'energy' derived from two sources, the sun from energy stored in fossil fuels or sunlight and energy 'stored' in Uranium/Thorium 'stored' within those elements via the r-process of a core-collapse supernova. (that pesky Quantum Mechanics thing yanno) Since we foolishly refuse to vigorously pursue zero greenhouse gas emitting nuclear power we are going to be using fossil fuels for energy. (throw in the fact that U.S. coal power plants dump nearly 50 tons of mercury into the environment every year and we might reconsider this anti-nuclear idiocy) So to put this in layman's terms: electrical power generation is approximately 35% thermal efficient and so is a modern internal combustion engine. Electrical power generated by fossil fuel in a power plant at 35% efficiency (thermal) incurs losses in the power grid, losses when stored and then withdraw from a battery (not to mention the total lack of energy density of current battery technology) and yes even at 90+ percent conversion efficiency in a motor another Loss of Energy. For road going vehicles it just makes sense to burn the fossil fuel in the bloody car at 35% efficiency and tell the climate change hoaxers to stick their taxation up their wazoo's at least until next century when commercially feasible fusion reactors become possible thereby giving mankind damn near free, zero pollution, unfricken-limited, electrical energy. By then we should have better batteries, Hell for all I know room temperature superconductivity might be a normal thing?!? So all hail hydrocarbons, 'Murica currently the world's #1 oil producer rock on internal combustion engines. Hell Yeah!

slug Face I think 300 years worth of fossil fuel is a bit of an overstatement. Even so, assuming we have aeons worth of oil and coal to fuel our evergrowing need of energy and power, that's not what matters. What we should worry about is if we can handle all those emissions. This January has been the hottest one in 150 years of recordings. As was december and november and october and so on. And this is not a simple coincidence, the planet is really warming. Life will not perish, this shouldn't be our concern. Life is waaay harder to kill than with a bit of carbon monoxide. We, on the other hand, will not really cope with those changes. But fuck us..

The rumors from 13 or so years ago was Toyota showed up with a design without communicating with NASCAR. NASCAR rejected the engine. Rumor has it NASCAR gave Toyota in house plans to the Chevy motor which had been redesigned with canted valves like the Ford had. They told yoter to build this and try again. And thus the Toyota Cup motor was born. This was reported in the media at the time. Fake news? Who the hell can tell anymore? But that's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol

+James Shunt its safe to assume you don't know much about either. Note the spacing between the center two exhaust ports and the spread on the intake. Toyota struggled for two years to qualify a car at the cup level much less be competitive until they signed over JGRs engine shop and engineers.

I'll tell you how it works: You believe something. The reason for believing this is usually *very* personal. So you only look for "evidence" which confirms your already very rigid set of belief. Anything that disproves this is completely ignored or overlooked. Hence confirmation bias. Found in fanatics (regardless of belief). Who can trust a fanatic to be clear-minded and unbiased? Now let me ask you a few questions: 1. Is there some rule that says an engine can't follow an already proved formula and must look totally different in order not to arouse suspicion from the likes of you? 2. Has there ever been anything in the world of engineering, in all fields, that didn't draw inspiration from another design? Just from the automotive world you can find several hundreds of examples. The legendary Offenhauser engine was directly copied/inspired by the revolutationary Peugeout 4-valve racing engine which won everything all over the world in the early 1910's. The Peugeots were purchased and studied. 3. JGR is *private* owned which means that it's really *their* name should be on the engine, so why is this not clear to you? Whoever pays them for the job, be it Chevrolet or Toyota or frickin' Saturn doesn't matter. Chevrolet would be equally wrong to call it "their" engine when they paid for the naming rights just as much as Toyota did. I repeat, JGR is a private company. Whoever pays for their services is irrelevant. Well, just as long as it's not Toyota because that annoys the heck out of you. 4. Do you have any issues with Chevrolet always paying Ilmor Engineering (located in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom) for naming rights for their IndyCar engines Chevrolet didn't design a single bolt for? I suppose Chevrolet followed Ford's example by letting Cosworth (also in the UK) designing "their" engines. Cosworth wasn't even owned by Ford but by Vickers. Ilmor was never owned by GM either. 5. Are you honestly saying Chevrolet never copied concepts and designs of others? GM hasn't been at the forefront of automotive development for *decades* and had it not been for their truck division they'd go out of business long ago. Good thing the US government decided to save all the jobs. *You* are not fooling anyone.

The 5.8 litre V8 in my opinion is the worst sounding engine I’ve ever heard. The THREE racing engines that I think sound GLORIOUS are the F1 v6,V8,v10 and v12.
