I am so happy that the ABC Broadcast of the 1972 Daytona 500 is finally uploaded on this platform! I have been waiting years for this. Thank you, NASCAR Classics!

To think that six different makes- Mercury, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, Chevrolet, and AMC- were in this classic race.

Why were the Petty cars running 426 "wedges" @ 9:45 ??
@HODIUSDUDE10 ай бұрын
I believe Maurice wanted to try something different. NASCAR introduced the restrictor plates sometime in 1970. I believe the theory was that the head design of the Wedge would provide similar power with better acceleration. The Wedge was typically used by Petty as a short track motor, as I recall.

426 Wedge was a damn good engine. I love them & the 413s. Put a Nascar equipped 413 in my 1968 Dodge Super Bee which was modified for racing. Not drag racing. What a monster.

By 1972 the Hemi was not available in production Mopars anymore.Therefore,it would have been illegal.

@@circaseventies True, however Bill France allowed the Boss 429 because the Hemis we're so dominant in Nascar up to this point.

To this day, it's weird to see Foyt and Donahue in anything but USAC/CART, or F1 for Mark.

AJ was a regular at Daytona, Riverside, Charlotte, Atlanta and Talladega for over 30 years. His first NASCAR event was in 1963 and last was 1996. Mark Donohue ran one F1 season but ran a whole lot more SCCA Can-AM and Trans-AM. They were from the era where race car drivers raced whatever, whenever, which was a big part of what made them great. Have fun!

Wow! A $40,000 race car which was big money back then. 40K today wouldn't even buy you a Toyota Rav4!!!
