I heard the finish of this race on the FM radio in my dad's truck. We were at a July 4th celebration in central North Carolina. I remember my dad saying, "Richard's never won the Firecracker, but there's a first time for everything." We were in the same spot when Petty won it in 1977, and not far from there when he won his 200th race at the Firecracker in 1984.

they use to start the Firecracker 400 at 10 o'clock in the morning because of the heat . but Talladega in August is by far the hottest race that i ever went to .

i have watched every Daytona cup race. i have seen cars that had far less horsepower draft with leaders lap after lap after lap in the 60s. Once the 70s rolled around that ended for a few years WHY couldnt BAKER draft off Petty? WHY could FOUR CAR DRAFTS….the 3-4-5th fastest entries…catch back up with #21 after he just checked out on them? by 1977 i quit watching nascar, too ridiculous, too much obvious cheating

NASCAR should never have have allowed the Malibu Laguna S3 "slant nose" you see in this race or the Olds Cutlass 442 that was common a few years later. Basically - GM cheating.

When did GM not cheat??? They ran illegal cylinder heads for years
@STP43FAN111 ай бұрын
How?
@jamesharrington492311 ай бұрын
@@STP43FAN1 Simple,GM got too run a certain.type of cylinder.head on their small.block.chevrolet engines because they had had a smaller cubic inch.th as n the Ford engine, I. Can't remember the part number they used but it had to do with the CFM they flowed which gave more horsepower than Ford, thanks to Rick Hendrick who had stock in Chevrolet, he was able to convince nascar to let them use them and countless other modifications that none of the officials knew about.

I was referring to the slant nose being a limited availability model for both cars - that was specifically created to have a better aero package at NASCAR tracks. GM should have been forced to run the standard Chevelle/Monte Carlo and the slab front Olds Cutlass Supreme. The S3 was given a restrictor plate for some tracks due to how much faster it was than anything else (including all the other GM makes).

@@jimbosc Ohhhh OK, yeah I agree with you about that, same way with the Chrysler winged warriors. And after 1970 Nascar told Chrysler that either run a smaller engine and not Hemi. OR run a traditional car with a hemi, kinda same thing I guess.
