I thought there were 6 drivers mathematically eligible for the championship in 1992: Mark Martin, Kyle Petty, Harry Gant, Bill Elliott, Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. Of those, I can't pick any driver I would have felt deserved the championship more in 1992, they all drove extremely well and what made it more remarkable was the fact that there was no chase, no points reset, no playoffs, nothing artificially influencing the championship battle. It was superb!

@AndrewDorsey27 it certainly seems that way, but in doing so, they've undermined the legitimacy of the champion. They failed to realise that it's precisely because points battles don't always go down to the last race is what makes them special. The Playoffs and before it The Chase allowed for contenders who normally wouldn't be in contention winning the whole thing, or you can have an insane regular season like Kevin Harvick in 2020 but not even make the final 4. At least during the Winston Cup era, average finish was a pretty good indicator for who the champion would be in any given year (Dale Earnhardt in 1987 recorded 5.9, Jeff Gordon in 1998 got 5.7, Dale Jarrett in 1999 recorded 6.8 for example)

That was the 1992 Atlanta race. Richard Petty's last Winston Cup race. Jeff Gordon's 1st in preparation for 1993 Rookie year. Bill Elliott won race but Alan Kulwicki beat Bill by 5 points for the Championship by leading the most laps.
