Imo, the worst thing is that he didn't use a single witch. Especially considering half of the "scary" shit they tried to add could have fit great with it. Like in the one campaign where there's like 15 witches in the corn, he could have had a spot with some cover and a few witches, and if you kill them, you get cursed, summoning a horde

I've seen a lot of people playing through "Questionable Ethics: Combined" recently, played it myself, and you actually need to make careful decisions at times on what you want. For example, you see a cash of guns that look good for now that requires a gas can, but who knows if the next one will have better weapons, and there's not enough gas cans for all of them, hell even half of them, so you need to make careful decisions and it's so damn fun.

Don't know if it's the same map but i played Questionable Ethics (first map) it's nice and different but absolutely doesn't respect the player as well, totally not about skill or decisions at all, but only luck rate. At some point the map puts you inside a very tiny space with a tank and a CONTEINER to be punched by the tank and instadown everybody, insane AF. The final map with water and lot of zombies and crushing platforms is garbage, even on normal.

@@marcelosouzaa1998 Questionable Ethics: Combined isn't that bad, but it does have a section with a large arena with lots of shifting floors where tanks spawn, first one then two, and there's four dumpsters the tanks can use. If you're smart, though, the only times those dumpsters are a threat are n't when the tank's near them, it's when it's on a moving platform since L4D2's engine is weird.

@@marcelosouzaa1998 you are talking about questionable ethics(V2). There are three questionable ethics. Alpha, combined and V2. The first level with the tank is ez. Trigger the tank, set him on fire, then run back to the bridge. The final level is to test what you have learnt. It's not the creators fault you suck or are unable to strategize. Did you play with bots? Did you only play it once? Did you play it just like any other map? Here is an advice for the final level: camp with your team either near the gate or get on the pipes. That way you can cover each other and make it just fine. And yes, I am allowed say you suck at l4d(or atleast in that map) due to you calling questionable ethics "garbage".

Ah Hometown, one of the most painful campaigns that my buddies suggest trying to play it together on expert without realizing the horrible fate that would be fall upon us. Looking back on it now, I'm surprised we managed to at least complete it fully in the end despite the painful setbacks we had went through. But this map isn't the worst one that I have seen. From my experience, there were even more unfun maps like hehe or Chinese-named only maps that made me suggest otherwise. Still nice review video 👍

I usually don't comment but this map gave me a fond memories of 3 players cock and ball torture as me and my friends made our way through this map in Expert with vanilla weapon. There are *far worse* maps out here, I wouldn't say this map doesn't "respect" players as it's pretty much made with difficulty in mind, it's just badly designed, that's all. Although the worst offender of this map would be the finale, you can actually cheese the tank by blocking it on the ladder on top of these towers, although this doesn't stop other tank from climbing up and decking you off from the tower anyway. I also played the entire thing with 400 ping as my 2 other friends are from another continent, this took us about an entire day or so to beat, with us coming back to beat it again after months to see if it's still difficult. Moral of the story is: Chinese maps are notoriously difficult so always play those with caution.

Honest question: why did you decide to review a campaign with 8 Survivors on your team? If it was to account for the campaign's difficulty, I could understand, but I don't think you specified. I don't see any evidence the campaign was designed for 8 people. IMO if you're *reviewing* a campaign you shouldn't install bot mods because most people don't use them. You had problems in this campaign that a vanilla player wouldn't experience, and also you likely avoided problems a vanilla player would run into. There's no correct way to review something, but I feel like this makes your review less useful to the majority of players. Maybe something to keep in mind in the future? EDIT: To clarify, I know you said you *think* this map would be unbeatable on Expert Realism without 8 players, but I get the feeling you started with 8 to begin with. Just a little odd IMO.

Day Break and Dark Wood are very overrated for me. In Day Break I hate the last level. I don’t like Scavenge ending, especially in a very poor game designed level. I get how the map was made exclusively for all human players teams. Some things about the map are only made to put the player to a big struggle, and it is a great way to keep the game relevant for advanced and expert players. Putting them to the edge, making them feel insignificant, only for them to feel invincible at the end of the campaign for beating all the hazards it threw at them. The creator made it clear at the beginning, play with human players or go to hell. It's like playing I Wanna Be The Guy, but in L4D2. I also get how unfinished it feels, but you can figure that aout at the beginning by reading only chapters 1,2, 5 and 6 are available. I just hope the campaign gets bigger and more polished with the time, because I see huge potencial by looking at the atmosphere, the buildings, the signs, everything makes you feel out of place, because you are in another country, in a place you are not used to live in. If I were to summarize this campaign in a few words, I would say: "uneasiness, survival, imposible challenge, dread". Only for players who like big challenges.

I played the map alreadey bevore i watched your video. And all i have to say is, there are a lot of maps with insane difficulty, but the good maps always give you tools to clear it. I never finished Home Town, and after seeing this Video, i will not even think about it.

A part of me wonders if this Map was supose to be some kind of open city exploration, as you move between safe houses to find a way out, as you go through rooftops and maybe old sewer tunnels... but I was quickly proven wrong. The invisible barriers make me wonder if the map maker wasnt sure how to use of the destructable enviroment to create artificicla barriers to block the players and tell them "You come from this way, theres nothing back here now, go somewhere else". Honeslty theres some creative ideas as you have to create your own paths with the destruction, but the good is often overshadowed by the bad. Alot of the later chapters give the vibe that the Map maker gave up and just threw whatever BS he could to make it hard for no reason.

This seems like a pretty standard workshop with some neat mechanical elements, it’s definitely not one of the worst. The majority of the issues you have with the map are evidently self inflicted, it clearly says at the start that the map is intended for a party of 4 on normal difficulty but you use 8 bots instead and then up the difficulty. It’s ok to not like the requirements but not following them is obviously going to negatively impact gameplay. The weapon changes also seem to be optional addons that aren’t forced onto the player.

@@cdsatcher I mean yeah questionable balancing isn't too out of the ordinary for custom maps, especially for maps that are intended to be difficult. I wouldn't say that makes it one of the worst maps on the workshop, a mediocre or poor one sure but not at the bottom.

@@nascoz3884 Not every map needs to be for every person. It's okay if it's only balanced around normal difficulty with friends. Want to play a single player map which is balanced for all difficulties?Then go find a map that is designed for that. Infact I think there should be more maps balanced around specific settings, allows the creator more freedom to custom tailor each situation. At the end of the day it's a free map made by a hobbyists.

JFC... and only having tier 1 weapons in such a confined space hurts. second map: couldn't even beat this one because the bots would run beneath the building and spontaneously die.

Oh I remember playing this with some friends. We never did finish it after getting to the area at around 7:00. We must have played an older version of the campaign at the time, because I don't remember the teleport into a jumpscare room if you fell into the pit below and just died instead.

If this map is set on a coastline over in Asia I don't think having mudnen is too out of character of the area you're playing in was hit by a typhoon, however since that specific context isn't delivered I can see how it throws pretty much everyone off

The weapon modifications are accurate to real life, like the AK with its normal 30 round mag and harsher recoil especially with the wooden buttstock compared to the AR family. *Then again we are in a world where a steroid abuser can become the Hulk through a F L U*

The one thing I hate about a lot of custom campaigns is that they don't know how to get the length right. So many custom campaigns have maps that go on and on without a safe room. It really tests my patience because if my team fails a map, we have to restart and go through that ALL OVER AGAIN. And then there's the ones that have like 10 maps in one campaign. Ideally, for a good player who prefers advanced as the best difficulty, a campaign should last at most around 20 minutes or so. The worst one that I can't even remember the name of, that one that had the baby crying crescendo event, had this SUPER LONG cave that lasted forever. And it was just super lazy brush work. It only vaguely looked like a cave. No ammo, no health items, nothing to keep the players going for that long. Then the map maker had the audacity to throw in a double tank encounter at the end. Even Glubtastic 1 isn't so unforgiving.

20 minutes at most seems pretty short though. Most official campaigns are designed to last 30-60 minutes, especially for players who aren't rushing to the exit. It's definitely true that a lot of custom campaigns are too long though.

I played this map about a month or two ago (Before seeing this video) On single player Advanced, with no bot addons and basically just weapon skins. I had about 290 hours in l4d2 on steam at the time, but I'd been playing l4d2 since I was a kid. The map was so forgettable that I'd forgotten I completed it! I had to skip chapter 2 because I had trouble figuring out the layout, and then when I did, I had no idea where to go following the infinite horde event. After that, I got to the finale (After dying once on chapter 3 due to the triple tank spawn). When I got to the finale, I remember thinking about how much of a slog it was. I didn't realize a total of 7 tanks spawned during that time because I was so bored out of my mind killing them that it became trivial and annoying, since all I did was camp in one spot and shoot and then move around. Honestly, after seeing your review I'm damn surprised I even completed it. I've been gaining more knowledge about l4d2 recently and I've played a lot more custom campaigns since then (I'm even thinking of designing my own). I really liked the aesthetic of the map, and didn't think it was horribly difficult. I think its main problems were definitely the bot navigation (I had to solo two out of the three tanks on my own in chapter 3 because my bots died both times) and the difficulty pacing. (Feel free to skip this next part, I just enjoy digressing into my knowledge of the theory-side of things) In the community's favorite official valve campaigns (i.e. Dead Center, Dark Carnival, No Mercy, Death Toll) there is a simple structure. The first chapter is the introduction to the setting, the plot, and introduces your storyline. There is not much difficulty, as it's supposed to be the introduction. This is because the campaigns are following the typical arc of a story. Chapter 1 may have a few swarms coming at you (Incoming attacks), but I don't believe they have a crescendo event, or anything too difficult. Then, we go to the middle chapters. These may include an inciting incident (Ex. in Deathtoll, Riverside doesn't make it, so they have to go to the docks. This leads to the ridiculous gauntlet event through the town.) and one or two crescendo events. These make the game feel fun and difficult. They make sense in the story, and the level is designed knowing what the players will encounter. In the end, you're supposed to experience that finale, climax kind of feeling. That's why there are a few hordes and tanks coming at you. This is the most difficult part of the entire story. And the level is designed around it. Dark Carnival gives you a stage, a couple of high-rise towers to shoot off of, and supplies and weapons. Death toll gives you the boat house. Of course, the way the finale plays out heavily influences the design. i.e. Dead Center, The Passing, and The Sacrifice all require you to split up in order to gas the car, or start the generators, so they separated them out and made a bigger map. The Parish is a gauntlet event, so they designed it to be one long bridge, with the infected coming at you from the front. These things make it obvious how to deal with each problem that l4d2 will throw your way. (Rant over) In this campaign, the biggest and most glaring problem is its difficulty. Yes, it gets more difficult as you go along. However, it overuses the special infected to measure the difficulty. You'll notice that this map was designed around the special infected, and not around the story of the map, or what the intended "event" is. Ex. - Chap. 2 When 10 of those hunters spawned. It's obvious the map creator made that segment on the roofs, where there are no buildings to obstruct the hunters, precisely so the hunters could pounce on you from everywhere. If the creator had wanted chargers instead of hunters, they would've designed a maze full of small corridors. This is the same problem with chapter 3. It's a long run, dedicated to dealing with the tanks that will spawn your way. If the creator had wanted it to be about witches, that chapter would've taken place in a cave with no lights, and lots of infected to cover up where the witches were hiding. In the finale, the creator knows that 4 tanks are about to come and beat your ass, so they make a helicopter come and drop you a machine gun and some supplies. What makes a l4d2 event fun and memorable isn't the special infected, as you will notice in the valve campaigns. It's the way valve designs the map to fit a "bigger picture" event. It seems that this map creator just had a different focus than what makes a typical l4d2 map good. They almost designed this map with the intent of training you on killing tanks. If they had instead focused on what story they were telling (You could tell there was some paranormal aspect that they were shooting for) this map could've been a lot better. They don't have to sacrifice the difficulty either. I feel that, if this map were redesigned with a clearer story and structure in mind, and with a much better handle of the different types of events l4d2 has to offer, it has the potential of being a great map. A fun, paranormal twist on l4d2 set in 1940s China can definitely be something incredibly fun. There is a lot of playful ideas you can have. For example, if I were the creator of this map, I would've leaned in on the paranormal aspect. In chapter 2, to enhance them collecting gas cans to burn down a barricade, I would've designed the level during this event to be darker, as if taking place the night after chapter 1. I would want the map to be eerily empty of zombies, and suspiciously easy. This would make it tenser as they approach the gas cans. At this point, its fun to mess with the player. Maybe, you could start playing special infected sounds when there are none. Just to keep the players on edge. Then, I would've added a few special infected spawns, and focused on making the map larger and possibly full of smaller corridors when nearing the gas cans. Add in some lights, to signal where the paths for the gas canw are, and you've got a pretty good map. Because the special infected sounds are playing, these would obscure the special infected that are actually there, and the players would now be on edge during this typical gas can run. It would also set up an expectation that the campaign is toying with your mind. This is a much nicer gimmick for the rising action of the story (whatever it may be), and is more forgiving to average players, as they likely won't take much damage if on lower difficulty, but less forgiving on expert, as the more tense you are during this section, the more panicked you will be. If you're more panicked, you're more likely to overlook when a special infected is about to get you. Plus, it seems easy enough to design. There isn't any special coding involved and mostly relies on triggering sounds and clever spawn points. Now, with this new focus, the design of every map following suddenly becomes clear as you look for ways to design every map around this central idea of mindfuckery. This is just one way I think the campaign could've been improved. Of course, this isn't the only way to improve the map. It's just a fun idea I had because I liked the paranormal aspect it had in the earlier chapters. Although, after reading some comments, I do understand that this map wanted to heavily reference chinese culture and films. If the creator had taken more ideas from there and implemented it into his map, to complement the l4d2 playstyle, I really think it would've been a unique and fun experience.
