For me, long drives are best with cold, ripe grapes. They are juicy, have a nice pop to them, the sugar helps you stay alert and you're inadvertently eating something healthy. Also grapes don't make a mess like strawberries, blackberries, etc. and make sure they are seedless so you're not fighting with them either.

I grew up in KC and my grandmother lived in SW Kansas. As kids we use to count the working oil pumps. Last time I drove there it was 13-14 years ago and I got Fire Jolly ranchers to keep me awake. It worked. As you go west, the states take longer and longer to go through depending on the route. It's funny the stuff we remember when we were kids. Safe travels if you aren't there already.

I love chicken necks too. At Thanksgiving my father and I always fought over who got the neck, and finally learned to split it in half. I was in rural South Carolina once and stopped at a KFC. They had fried gizzards, hearts, and liver. The only KFC I’ve ever seen them in. Cooked perfectly. The livers were just right, not dried and rubbery

Mike, I know that this is a long shot, but if you ever pass through Marietta, Ga, you just HAVE to stop by Williamson Brothers BBQ. Their sauce is a vinegar based sauce that is the best I've ever had! Molasses based sauces have always been way too sweet for me, and the Williamson's sauce is fantastic! Good travels, Mike!

The lady who was the Exec of the Country Music Association in the late '80s! early '90s kind of took country music to Japan. It got to be pretty popular up to the last I was at all interested. I don't know what's up now, but people tend to carry on liking music once they start.

I tend to get very tired on long drives as well. I drive 5+ hours pretty regularly, I haven't tried coffee but I have found that listening to music that pumps you up helps me, personally. In my case that's mostly heavy metal, but peppier country songs could work too?

There is a reason that the mid-West is called "fly-over" states. You can drive for miles and the scenery (or the horizon) doesn't really change. So, driving on the freeway is monotonous and sleep-inducing. When I was in the US Navy and traveled much more extensively across the nation than I do now, I would make it a point to find a rest-stop along the freeways or a turno off onto a busy McD's parking lot and nap a bit. It was much better than falling asleep at the wheel and endangering unsuspecting fellow drivers.
