Finally a video on this. We have been doing this for a year. My teen has an Apple Watch under family member (no cellphone). When we went to AT&T last year to try and set up cellular on watch only they had no IDEA on what I was doing. Glad this is being shared. Such a great idea.

Do you have Siri enabled. We found often our child could overcome app restrictions because Siri would open a browser and work. So our 8 year girl could ask Siri to show her videos of horses over coming app restrictions on KZbin, ie iPad. I am liking the idea of a watch, for location and calls. But cautious as Apple screen time interface isn’t intuitive, almost design by non parents. You want control, but for it to be easy to configure. It be great if Apple were to release a specific kids version of the watch. Nice video if we get a watch we will use this video, cheers

Hey @zeemiller9704. If you just want to track, you may want to consider an Apple Air Tag. That will be a lot simpler and cheaper.

Gosh, Thank you so much for putting all of this together. Was breaking my head all day piecing all these things from several searches just to set my child's new watch. I still couldnt find one piece though. Is there a way to limit the usage of specific apps on the watch besides school time. For instance, Need to restrict Watch tube (youtube) during school hrs. Is there a way to do it. Any info on this will be great.

I just set up one for my daughter, but I’m having trouble with the message settings! It says that dictation (speak to text) needs to be set up on the phone, but where?? As well, I can’t figure out how to design the pre-set responses for texts either!

When unwanted calls directly to voicemail. At somepoint voicemail might get full due to so many junk marketting calls. So does that mean we have to clean up voicemail frequently? Can we disable all.unwanted apps like browser on apple SE watch ?

Thank you this is fantastic info. For my son’s contacts. When I add contacts it adds all his contacts from his iPad (friends etc). I would just like to add specific contacts but it only allows this during down time. If I schedule a 24 hour downtime, the iPad is on downtime and not usable because the watch is. Hope this makes sense. Can you help me please? 🙏🏻

Thank you so much for sharing this!!!! I noticed there were a lot of different apps on the screen. Is there a way for me to delete them so they do not have access? I want it to literally function as only a text/call/gps. So I don’t want music/podcast/etc. Can I delete these apps off the watch?

I’m finding a lot of cell services listed as allowing family set up aka two or More apple watches to one phone under that setup- they actually don’t allow it. I almost bought a new apple watch bc I was told yes then when tried to set up my old apple watch in family set up the service didn’t allow it

Thank you. Since your kid doesn't have their own phone and the watch is tied to your phone, does the watch have it's own phone number for text and calls? It seems like most carriers in the US require a phone plan tied to the watch plan... So same phone number for the watch as the phone.

Hi. Thanks for your video. I am trying to do the same with the Galaxy watch for my 2 sons. Originally I was told that it's possible to have it set up as a standalone device, but so far I wasn't able to do it, so my other options would be Gizmo or Apple watch. I have no Apple devices, so don't know if I would need an active line with the Iphone to set up and monitor the Apple watch or I can buy an old Ipnone and use it off cellular network. Also you mentioned Gizmo limitations. Can you eleborate on that. Thanks

We had four different Gizmos. Half the time we couldn't reach our kids, receiving a "this call cannot go through" message.

I think se and later have school mode so yes I have the Apple Watch 5 and mine doesn’t have school mode on it the se is the least expensive and has all the features a kid would need in my opinion

I do not. But Gizmo was just so unreliable. We had several inconvenient situations trying to find our kids at school and couldn't reach them due to connectivity issues. And we had more than four Gizmos. We had the same issues on each one.
