Long time vegan Indonesian follower here 👋😭 Just want to say; this recipe might not be traditional, but it makes total sense! You can add beansprouts, peas, scramble some tofu into the filling, even omit the sweet soy sauce, and add more sriracha for a spicy garlicky red nasi goreng! 😋

Yes it's very customizable. I wonder if people make it different in different regions on the country? Because this was provided by an indonesian, but they also had homemade bali chili paste in the recipe which I didn't do because of ingredients!

@@hotforfood Sure. I mean nasi goreng literally means fried rice, and you can do whatever as long as it includes frying some rice! And Wayan is a uniquely Balinese name, so he must be Indonesian 😁 The cold rice, fried shallots, and adding some form of chili & garlic are on point. What I meant by traditional is just traditionally Indonesians uses kecap manis (specific Indonesian molassesy sweet soy sauce made only with fermented black soy, palm sugar, and maybe some spices) and no vinegar, for that OG classic nasi goreng... But hey, I honestly think "authenticity" is overrated when it comes to food, just use what's available and make it delicious!

sorry i thought i delete this comment already, I'm from West Java (Bandung) and the common way we have nasi goreng is with fried tempeh and the fried yellow tofu you'd probably has as well. :) It also may has the chinese pakchou mixed in the stir fry!

Balinese people are sooo friendly. Even though they have to deal with all kinds of nasty tourism and its consequenses. I could eat their fried rice everyday too 😍

Tried to buy your vegan comfort classic book as a kindle, but it won’t let me on my iPad for some reason. Is it only in paperback/hardcover?

I am appalled that you would make an Asian dish with TJs brand soy sauce. I have worked for Trader Joe’s for nearly 10 years and I would NEVER use our soy sauce bc it’s absolute garbage. I run weekly tastings at my store for the crew members and if I’ll need soy sauce for something, I’ll bring my own from home! I mostly cook Asian cuisines at home (Cantonese/Korean especially) so I keep a light, dark, and sweet soy sauce on hand as well as ponzu and a few others. :)

wow ok. Who cares! LOL use what you want when you make it. I go through soy sauce like nothing else when I'm recipe testing so that's what I use cause it's cheaper in price. Anyway, next time I'll transfer it to an unnamed bottle so no one actually knows hahaaa

@@hotforfood I assume one would want to select high quality ingredients available at a reasonable price to ensure the best possible end product, especial from a recipe creator. Seeing as I go through a couple bottles of soy sauce a month just in my day to day cooking, I prefer to use the best tasting economical brand I can source. I just got home from my local Vietnamese supermarket and purchased a decent brand of soy sauce (made in Hong Kong) called Koon for the same price as the TJs brand ($2.99). There is also the Kimlan brand for $4.50ish that is another brand I often use (from Taiwan). Also, neither contains any funky preservatives or ingredients; always a plus! (I live in Southern California so you could likely find either near you.) One doesn’t have to break the bank in order to source quality ingredients, just care enough to pay attention to the details in one’s cooking. But I am learning not everyone maintains the same attention to detail and integrity. I seldom comment on KZbin videos and I’m sorry to say that after reading your response, sadly after many years of following you online, I will no longer be subscribed to you’re content. Not bc of your choice of soy sauce, but due to your flippant response to a casually concerned commenter.
