@ink47324 жыл бұрын
@@loveanimals-0197 We all know what a 'gut feeling' is. As a very talented 'individual player' Shane is/was good, but not alround cricket analyst or disciplined(among other factors) to be a good captain. Nas only had a little of individual batting talent for international cricket, he has done quite a good with it even captaining a side. Where Shane works as an employee, Nas is good to be a management staff.

@@loveanimals-0197 what his main point about gut feeling was, that even when you’re not sure what to do. But you feel you should do something make the decision. Don’t wait for others to figure it out. You make the decision and you live and die by it. So what you instinctively think is the best thing when in doubt. Because you’re not always gonna have the answers. So you just have to play the game and see how it pans out.

@divyanarayan22143 жыл бұрын
And he himself likes people who are direct, truthful, and honest...even if it is an unpleasant truth about himself. In his autobiography (Playing With Fire), Nasser Hussain said that in Sri Lanka (2003 tour), during a team-meeting, Marcus Trescothick (then Eng's vice-captain) was asked who should be dropped from the side. Trescothick said "Nasser Hussain" right in his presence. After the team meeting, Trescothick apologized to Hussain for taking his name but said that is what he felt on the basis of form (that Nasser Hussain should not be in the team). Hussain understood it completely and appreciated Trescothick for stating the truth (because trust can be developed only by being honest).

11:44 - Exactly what I have been thinking of ECB's fragile treatment of a match winner like KP. Indians and Australians have always had tough-to-handle cricketers who were greats. Yet they had great captains who could tone them down and keep them involved instead of throwing them under the bus like ECB did. KP needed an arm around the shoulder and some importance.
@11hitmanDagenius5 ай бұрын
Which tough to handle cricketers in India are you talking about? And India only had two good captains - Ganguly and Dhoni. The assumption that Indian captaincy management has always been stellar is an open question because nothing is known what happens behind the scenes and everything is kept under wraps. Australian cricket management is miles better than any team - they have been consistent and professional with the way they manage players even in the bad times.
@11hitmanDagenius5 ай бұрын
You're making it sound like it's common knowledge that Indian man management is the gold standard or something. There is veery little transparency in what happens behind the scenes in Indian teams to assume that. In any case, a personality like Petersen would not be rising up the Indian cricket scene. Plus BCCI have got history of heavy handed treatment of their players in certain contexts like Hardik pandya.

One thing that they did not touch on was the captain being in form, and so remaining an automatic pick for the team. Almost invariably the captain is chosen from a short list of well established players. However many captains are dropped or replaced when it appears that being captain has in some way badly affected their own form. Whether this is the case, or whether it is more often for some other reason or reasons which the public are not made aware of, is something that would have been interesting to have got some insight into?

True fact - Do you folks know WHY this discussion about captaincy took place? It is because I criticized Mike Atherton's captaincy on Twitter and Athers blocked me for it. I am not joking. On my Twitter timeline, around last year...someone had posted a pic of Graeme Hick's infamous knock of 98* (infamous because Athers had declared and denied him a hundred. Hick was really upset by the proceedings). Anyway...for that pic, someone said that Athers had given Hick enough time to get to a hundred...so declaring the innings when he was on 98 was not exactly unfair (after all, one has to think about the team). I replied - "If Athers really wanted to think of the team, why did he wait till Hick reached 98 to go for the declaration? He should have declared much sooner...if it really was about the team. At least Hick would not have been hurt so much." Basically, I thought it was hypocritical of Athers to think that Hick was batting slowly considering Athers was *never* a fast scorer himself in the first place. Remember, England wanted to win that test match in Karachi in 2001? Nasser Hussain has explicitly said in his autobiography that he suggested to Athers to make way for Alec Stewart to open the batting in that innings just so that England could get the runs quickly. Meaning even the England team did not have so much faith in Athers' ability to score runs quickly. So...on what grounds did Athers think that Hick batted too slowly to deny him a hundred?🤷🤷🤷 This is basically what I said about Athers and his captaincy (and I tagged him as well). Mind you, I wasn't rude or abusive or anything...and I certainly did NOT get personal with Athers. I only expressed an honest opinion. And Athers blocked me for it. I subsequently tweeted to Nasser about this...Nasser didn't block me or anything (he seems a much more decent guy). But it seems like this discussion about captaincy is more like a scripted defence of Athers putting itself across as a discussion about captaincy (if you listen to the whole podcast on Spotify, you will find that Nasser pointedly defends Athers as a captain on more than a few occasions during this discussion).

@Hi-kq1vi4 жыл бұрын
But the problem was he was a PR nightmare-a big part of the captaincy is maturity, setting an example on things like late nights. As soon as the John The Bookie story broke in late 1998 that was it for his hopes for captaincy. He was in the papers non-stop for various things-harassing a nurse, letching on women, having a go at kids, taking drugs, being filmed wearing an inflatable phallus during a tryst with two slappers etc. He was a disaster off the field.

After Kim Hughes, When Allan Border took the captaincy, tjen, Australia changed and become very competetive Cricket Team
@Hi-kq1vi4 жыл бұрын
Took him a long time-4/5 years. Hughes lost Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee & Rodney Marsh in the same test in early 1984, as they all retired at the end of the series & he couldn't replace them, then he had to face the Windies so was on a hiding to nothing. When Ponting lost Langer, Warne & McGrath in 2007 it wasn't that big an issue because he was left with an incredibly talented team-Langer was replaced with the very capable Jaques, McGrath's clone Clark replaced him & the only one they really missed massively was Warne, but of course they still had MacGill in reserve. First test after that they also debuted Johnson.

A superb team Australia had become since winning The World Cup in 1987, then they went on to win the Ashes of 1989, home and away Ashes series. Since then they were at their top game.
