No matter what anyone says. Duncan Fletcher is that kind of coach who came to coach teams in teams which were in their transitional phase and he did very well. 2000s for England and 2011-2016 for India. Also, Thorpe's role was to be noticed here, he was a saviour for England in that lower middle order, similar to Laxman for India. What a player he was, rock solid, resilient and classy. RIP Thorpey. Naseer Hussain, although statistically not a great Captain, but Cricket is beyond stats too, sometimes the impact and legacy you create overpowers. He made England look tough and you rightly said how the combination of Naseer -Duncan made the players mentally and physically tough. 2005 Ashes was the result. Groomed Michael Vaughan as a player and a potential future captain as well.

For me, this series happened in the shadow of our disgraceful "performance" in the 99 WC final. The best team we have ever sported, and they threw away that match. I couldn't support my own team until the redemptive years of Misbah and Younis, more than a decade later. But hats off to the courage and fight shown by Nasser Hussein, Atherton, Stewart, Thorpe and Trescothik in difficult circumstances. They laid the foundations of the resurgence of English cricket after the chronic failures of the 90s.

The first test of the tour of South Africa in 1999/00 was ridiculous. It shouldn’t have started when it did. It was almost dark, drizzle was in the air, and the wicket was almost impossible to play on. Donald and Pollock were both World Class bowlers anyway, but with conditions like that, they were unplayable. England were 4 for 2 I think after a few overs.

3 day first class matches when the rest of the world were moving to 4 day matches, no central contracts, out of touch selectors whose ideas were rooted in the fifties and sixties, chop and change selections, players only 1 poor score away from being dropped, too many mediocre players being selected whilst better ones were dropped because they were seen to be disruptive characters, poor coaching, even worse man management, a hostile press and English test pitches designed to suit visiting teams. That was England in the 1990s. Even when they had success it was never built upon and lessons weren't learned until Hussain became captain, Duncan Fletcher became head coach and David Graveney and Geoff Miller revamped the selection system.

i hope you produce more stories videos like this. 87 was a strange period cause after pakistan defeated the west indines they thought they could win the world cup and when they eventually lost to England in the Semis cause of Mike gatting Imran had retired feeling his time was over. No one expected that Aussie team to also win. I say this with respect that even Allan Border was shocked that they went that far but after they and the turning point was the Gatting Sweep which Australia was on the ropes and you can tell Gatting wasn't blamed but he always had a grudge against Pakistan and So did Beefy. Imran returned from retirement but didn't play in the 1990 series against new zealand or Australia. and they drew the 1989 series against west Indies. man those were the days So much amazing cricket and stories, Sadly these stories are hardly told these days
