The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Nat's piano playing and arranging are his most unappreciated aspects of his artistry. I read in a biography that his finger placement was so unique bc when he was starting out professionally most of the clubs had pianos with broken keys or weren't tuned. My guy learned how to play around them.....genius.

...I'm so very thankful this was wonderful, you have to find his live performance of "Stay With Love" it's like a modern day video so upbeat! And maybe buy the "Love Is The Thing" CD while you can still find it, it's so beautiful! I found mine on e Bay what a awesome collection of songs!

Nat was one of the all time greats and somehow under appreciated. He was one of the greatest jazz piano players in addition to being a hall of fame singer.

I just want to say that I don't think he was under appreciated.. People back in the days I think had jealousy about black people and bring white people to the fore more than they deserved. For example Frank Sinatra. In my opinion he is just an ordinary singer next to Nat king Cole. This is my opinion. Everyone can have their opinion.

No warm ups, Nat just went and played the piano like crazy! He also sits at an angle so the audience can see his playing and singing.

Fun fact the real reason Nat sat at an angle is because the spot where he got his first gigs as a pianist had ceilings too short to accommodate his 6’2 height, so he sat at an angle to keep his head from hitting the ceiling. The piano was also out of tune and that’s how he developed those trademarked single bass notes of his 🙂

It has nothing whatsoever to do with being shallow and everything to do with seeing something missed. Sure he was a wonderful singer, but that happened largely (not completely but largely) at the expense of his pianism. The piano took a backseat in his fame and his recordings. Just read through some of the comments here from people who say they never even knew he was a pianist, as evidence of that.

Agreed - his phrasing is great. I love his left hand bass note ‘stabs’ which ground his melodies/improv. You see it here a few times that split second pause he creates and decides what bass note he’s going to play.

He was just too wonderful of a pianist. I don't know why he ever turned his focus to singing (although he had a beautiful voice). The piano was like one big wondrous toy for him and it was always Christmas day. There's just too few videos of him playing especially this close up.

I don't know his story enough to know how he decided to switch like he did. The lure of big time success perhaps? He was certainly much loved in the 50s and 60s, but obviously by a completely different audience than he had before.

I’d heard of Nat King Cole growing, but I had the mistaken idea he was just another pre-rock-era pop singer. I had a weekend job in high school working at a restaurant. My mother came to pick me up after my shift one evening. She was playing Nat King Cole on her cassette deck. (This was 1974.) I heard that piano, and I was astounded. “Wow, that guy’s good!” I said.( One of the songs on the tape was “Nature Boy”. I knew the song because Grace Slick sang it with The Great Society, the group she was in before the Jefferson Airplane.) My opinion hasn’t changed.

Ken Burns is a race-baiting Communist, and Nat was too graciously magnanimous toward his attackers after the assault on stage by the racists. Nat took a lot of flak from the “civil rights” moralizers after that. I guess Ken Burns would be one of them.

Oscar Peterson used to sing. The story goes that he agreed not to feature his singing if Nat agreed not to feature his piano playing. Just so they wouldn't tred on each other's toes. They obviously had great respect for one another, coz that's what they ended up doing 😎
