The gold for sure, and everyone in the rink (except of course the judges) knew it. Watching this right after Brasser and Eisler's free, it's amazing how much FASTER this team is.

I understand exactly what you are saying! Although I have great appreciation for the romantic style and textbook perfection of G&G, I have never felt as excited watching them as when watching the dynamic, risk-taking skating of Artur and Natalia. I think the gold was a sentimental gesture, much like giving an Oscar to someone who has been nominated many times but never won.

This is my favorite pairs LP ever, by far, even better than their 92 LP, and Natalia did much better on this one in her solo jumps. However, I do admit that the gold could have gone either way betn G&G and M&D, since it's not always about who made less mistakes. What angered me though, was the commentator, not in this broadcasting but Scott Hamilton of CBS. He was totally for G&G from the beginning, and commentated as if they already won. And he did the same thing in 2002 for Sale and Partier.

So many years passed, and I thought maybe my opinion would change. But it's the same as 20 years ago. Mishkutenok/Dmitriev should have won. Cleaner skate and more difficult programme. These two gave it everything! GG were also great, but MG were better that night.

+anirak383 Gordeeva-Grinkov won because they skated so beautifully in the European championships.But in the olympics Mishkutenok-Dimitiev were better.Judges 8-1 for Gordeeva-Grinkov.The only judge voting for M-D were belorussian women. Check out mine video Gordeeva-Grinkov in the European championships with the british commentary

@@RaineriHakkarainen but it should be about who skated better on the day, not who skated better the competition before. I really am starting to notice that the judges were always in favour of G&G, like at the 1990 worlds where Katia completely messed up their jump decadence/ combination and they still won. In the kiss and cry she looked so upset like she knew it was a huge mistake yet the judges gave them the win

Watched this and G&G again. NO comparison. Not only were M&D more passionate artistically, but they were flawless technically, AND they had much harder elements. What the hell were the judges thinking???? Talk about a predetermined win.

Because they were G&G, husband and wife, a good story/ narrative always wins over the judges

Not flawless her double axel was 2 footed, he had a close moment on the end step sequence & generally a bit scratchy compared to to g&g

G&G won this day because M&D were underscored simple as that.. this is timeless, innovative with no romantic style but with a great amount of difficulty they deffinately set themselves appart this day and raised the bar in pair FS.
@travisstrong53892 жыл бұрын
They had a bad season pre Olympics, and that is why they were underscored and it was hard for them to win. Simple as that. The fact 2 judges even had them 3rd behind Brasseur & Eisler (who probably didn't even deserve the bronze over Shishkova & Naumov) reflects that. If they had a better season, skated the same way, and G&G still had the mistakes they had, there is a good likelihood they win.

M & D should have protested. The gold medal was decided from the beginning. It should never be allowed. People who do not have a fair and calm eye should not be allowed to sit on the judges' seat. If they can't do that, it would be better to eliminate judged events that are based on personal feelings and political decision-making power from the Olympics.
@ancamg5 жыл бұрын
Amazing program from Natalia and Artur. The American judge was pathetic. He should have lost his licence for his ugly political voting. M/D should have won by a slide. G/G were nice but with mistakes.

It is hard to take one's eyes off Dmitriev. I think he skated with romance and passion. I don't think Natalia matched his style.
@metsdudenj12 жыл бұрын
I think by skating first they were at a big disadvantage. G and G had better speed, lifts, footwork and choreography. Yes, they had two small jump errors but Natalia double footed the double axel, they had inferior edging, easier lifts, and less lifts. I had Gand G for gold easily
@captainapaullo11 жыл бұрын
G&G won. period. the artistic mark is concerned with line, posture, position, carriage, edging, fluency, and maturity. M&D have great skill and art but their line is blocky and abrupt compared to G&G, and at times they are simply awkward and occasionally chaotic. To achieve their combo spin positions requires the repeated break, check and wind up and is much slower. G&G were always balanced and harmonious and are just galactically superior in every category. G&G are better by orders of magnitude even when they make minor errors.
@el7jake11 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your "galactically superior in every category" comment. For one thing, I believe musical interpretation was also part of artistry/presentation marks. I always found M&D's to be extremely dynamic. In fact, I always thought their skating in general to be much more dynamic, authoritative, energetic, and innovative than G&G's, whose skating was often described as "textbook." Textbook" is fine, for the results of a physical exam, but I prefer the creativity of M&D. I think we're really talking about apples vs. oranges here. I also think that G&G won largely because everyone, including the judges, was in love with their love story.
@captainapaullo11 жыл бұрын
Miel Mani we are talking about apples and oranges, if apples are better than oranges. the love story speculation is unwarranted. g&g won olympic, world, and european titles (even as juniors) prior to their marriage and family. textbook is exactly what world class figure skating is all about. textbook execution of elements is what every skater tries to live up to. the creativity or expression of a skater or pair has to live within the boundary of flawless execution. technique plus art is what makes g&g superior. m&d had several innovative positions and spins but we're not talking about judging flexibility or acrobatics. m could split herself in half and still manage a death spiral but if she bobbles an edge or breaks form at the knee going into it then its not fluent. the artistry of the line and extension suffer no matter how creative, interpretive, or expressive. g&g were consistently and repeatedly technically and artistically superior to the extent that judges marked them consistently above their contemporaries and commentators still cite them as the finest pair ever as amateurs and pros. anyone who might think g&g were less creative than m&d needs to see their vocalise performance. m&d had inconsistent technique, m was a nervous competitor and two foot jumper who often doubled or popped singles, hand down on the surface or just plain fell when she should have landed triples on one leg with no step out. fervent, authoritative expression and arm styling, innovative spins and creative positions are swell but can't make up for the poor execution of flawed technique. great expression and creativity can only get great marks if they supplement great skating. judges do not score for execution of emotional dynamics. look at m&d's triple twist: she crashes and collides with him every time. yeah, she lands it, but it's not smooth, its not finessed. a rough successful landing is always inferior to a higher jump with more coverage with a clean edge on one leg. m&d or k&d would only place first if g&g weren't competing. i doubt i've ever seen g&g fall or two-foot or step out of a landing. i saw them live twice with stars on ice and they were the only pair in my experience that ever did triples side by side or a unison skid spiral in exhibition. they simply can't be matched. of all the pros that came back to amateur competition in 94, g&g are the only ones who reclaimed their title. their record speaks for itself.
