Thank you for visiting this place mam. I have lived my entire life in India but got the chance to visit hampi only last October. Me and a friend of mine had the plan to stay in hampi for 2 days but once we got there the place just cast a spell on us and we ended up spending an entire week. Last year it was less crowded and the weather was much cooler. We took many sunrise walks and would walk upto any mound or hill and just sit there absorving the absolutely magnificent view of the ruins. Its a magical place and everyone should visit and atleast spend 3-4 days to really observe the place.

This is the ruins of the Imperial Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, that is the 'City of Victory', Vijayanagara from the 1370s to 1565. The City was the largest city in the world (many recent studies are now saying larger than Beijing). The core urban area was 45km2 but the Metropolitan Area was 180km2 with a population of around 1 million people. The Imperial Palace was massive comples of about 0.5km2 in size. The City had 7 rings of fortifications with the innermost fortification marking the Royal Enclosure. The City had several districts. Each district had a main temple at the centre, with a water reservoir, and a bazaar. For example, Hampi Suburb had Virupaksha Temple, Vitthalapura had Vijaya Vitthala Temple, Krishnapura had Balakrishna Temple, Kamalapura had Pattabhirama Temple. The Outer Suburbs included smaller walled townships like Malpanagudi, Santhanur, and Hosapete. Hosapete was one of the last suburbs built (by Emperor Krishnadevaraya in 1520s) where a new Imperial Palace was built along with the massive but incomplete Ananthashayanagudi Temple. The City had very wide highways and roads. The Virupaksha Bazaar and Achyutyaraya roads were 30metres wide, Vitthala Bazaar Road was 40m wide, and the Krishna Bazaar road and the the highway linking the North-East of the City with Hosapete to the South-West were both 50m wide. The Imperial Palace was described by foreign travellers from Europe to be larger than entire cities like Lisbon. The Palace had several royal apartments, an administrative complex, a noblemans complex, and a ceremonial complex as well several smaller temple complexes, warehouses, gardens and stables. There is an Olympic sized swimming pool where the members of the Royal family would sit in little boats and squirt waters and colours during Holi festival. The city was described by travellers from Europe, Persia, the Middle East and North Africa to be the best provided city in the world. The Bazaars were packed with people and carriages, goods from all across Asia, Europe and East Africa. There were diamonds and other gems and jewellery being sold on the streets. (The Vijayanagara Empire had a complete monopoly on the World's diamond supply back then). The City had a very advanced water management system which in some part still survives today. Surrounding the city was a complex canal irrigation system as well as Aqueducts (like the surviving 14th century Bukka Raya Aqueduct), and large reservoirs like the massive surviving Kamalapura Lake. Most of the houses were single story buildings made of bricks and wood with tiled roofs or flat roofs. Within the city walls were many gardens and even some land for agriculture and orchards.

It requires at least 2-3 weeks to explore entire Hampi, there are so many great sculptures and scientific inventions from the 14th - 17th century that will blow your mind, also i suggest you to visit Anjanadhri Temple ( it is very close ) and you should not miss that place.

Hampi is just beyond beautiful. Some of the places, like the Queens baths, lotus palace, elephant stables. It takes your breath away. The step well, canal systems. Carved plates/ thalis and katories , amazing. The monolith huge doors, which could only be opened by elephants. Secret underground chamber, so the king could have discussions and no one else would hear. The administration area is spectacular. You see carvings of elephants, horses and camels. That was a sign that trade used to take place with Persia and Arabia. There are two pillars near this area, which were used as lathes, to shape the pillars into perfect rounds. The technology behind all of this is so wonderful to see. The main temples, the chariot, and the musical pillars. if it was in a western country it would have been wonder of the world.

Although ,i am not a fan of monarchy in general , Hampi was a part of Vijayanagara, the capital of the very renowned Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th-century.It became a center of economic and administrative activity of the Deccan region kingdom. Historians consider the empire to to one of the most well run empires in the world statecraft wise.

It is a magical place which takes us back into those ancient times. It was ruled by one of the powerful dynasties i.e The Vijayanagara Dynasty and the most popular ruler even though he ruled for a short period Sri Krishnadevaraya made an indelible mark in the history of India. We are in eternal debt to him as he took the art and architecture to its Zenith and left an unparalleled legacy of these artforms and magnificent architecture. The serene Tungabhadra river on the banks of which this Incredible kingdom once flourished is still the lifeline to the modern civilisation. There is an old saying which goes like this “Tunga paanam Ganga snaanam” which means ‘One should drink sweet water of Tungabhadra and one should take a dip in the holy Ganges’ (Atleast once in thier lifetime) I am glad you got to drink the sweet Tungabhadra water and now its time you take a dip in Holy Ganges :)

For instance in Varanasi it is comfortable enough to take a dip. Vijaynagar empire was secular but in the end 2 important muslim commanders switched sides and helped the sultanates, the last emperor was dragged out and beheaded, later they looted destroyed and burned hampi and raped the hindu women or taken as sex slaves, hindu men were mass beheaded. this was the pattern that followed everywhere in india pakistan and bangaldesh for nearly 1000 years by muslim invaders. Same thing happened in europe esp in spain and eastern europe, men were slaughtered and white christian women were captured as sex slaves and sold in istanbul n other middleeast countries
