I have my mother's old cedar chest that she didn't take care of over the years so it ended up her basement. She passed away in 1988 but I didn't take it then. My dad passed away 9 years ago so I had to take care of selling the house, so I brought the cedar chest over to my house. I let it air out for a few days in the garage because it had a mildew smell. But it all went away after leaving it open and cleaning it. So I'm going to follow what you did--hopefully not putting too much Poly on :) I will keep you posted.

I really like the remake!! It’s hard to believe it’s same chest

I have just purchased a used Lane blanket chest with the intention of refinishing it. Since I am a complete novice, I am interested in all the mistakes that inform the whole process, since I am likely to make the same ones. Using shellac to make the paint adhere is one of those things I wasn’t aware of, and using a finishing coat with chalk paint, being careful not to put too much on also. As a senior, my back may not hold out, so this may take longer, but it is inspiring to see the beautiful end result. I will also remove the lock.

Very nice makeover, what some of the other KZbin people do is add some of the color from what they painted to avoid white streaks, great video from London, UK🤠🤠🤠🥸🥸🥸😎😎😎😎

Thank you so much for the tip about removing the lock. I had never heard of that before but I have small kids, and I've always wanted a chest like this so the safety info is really important to me!

very nice. i am disappointed to hear that Lane made their cedar chests with less quality wood as i got my daughter a lane cedar chest for her 16th birthday back in 1990. she was also leery about that lock.
@BartimaeusTrilogyFan Жыл бұрын
Towards the end of the company's life, it definitely turned to cheaper materials to cut costs. Still went under, though, as have most America based furniture companies, unfortunately. But older cedar chests are still made of good materials. I've even come across a few from the 90's that were still made from solid wood.

Love it! I am going to attempt my first ever refinish/refurbish; whatever it’s called…very soon. I have a very beautiful hope chest I got years ago that’s just been beaten up on the outside lol I am hoping to do a farmhouse cream and black hardware design so I’m kinda nervous. It’ll be the main eye candy of my living room lol so I am scared to mess it up. I just want one so bad but I can’t afford one so I thought maybe I can try and save my old one since it’s still a strong beautiful hope chest. Anyways, thank you for the knowledge and inspiration! I loved your end result…perfection! ❤

There was sure a lot going on with that chest prior to the make over: Leaves, french provincial hardware (with a farmhouse style chest) curved skirt, and to top it off that cool pad! When did some style designer think all that was a good look? Much better now.

Beautiful! Each of your videos is so informative!! When you use Krud Kutter, how do you handle? Rinse off? Wipe off with wet cloth? etc. Trying to figure out if I need to rinse and how to best do this 🤔
@ARayofSunlight2 жыл бұрын
I personally use a wet rag to scrub. And I try to always rinse with a clean rag afterwards. Especially if it’s really dirty.

I have a 1956 Lane Cedar chest that I picked up from California State Surplus. I wanted find out more about it. They did send me replacement locks. Call them for replacement locks. Also I think that with the "drawer look" that simple modern style brass pulls would look very nice against the color you chose.

This is super beautiful! How do you decide when to brush paint vs when to use the paint sprayer?
@ARayofSunlight2 жыл бұрын
It’s just based off what I feel like doing that day. If i was doing all of this for myself and not sharing videos, I would spray most everything. That’s just my preference. But since I’m sharing, I try to mix it up more often.

Do you sand with 400 grit after every layer of poly?
@ARayofSunlight10 күн бұрын
We don't sand between every coat of poly. Only if the poly feels really rough after it dries, it has a really rough texture, then we'll sand it to make it smooth before the next layer.
@sandymckoy13562 жыл бұрын
I do like what have done. The color is nice, however, I would like to have seen some contrast on the piece. Pillows are a nice touch but are not part of the unit. Don't get this wrong you did an amazing job.
@nursesunite15582 жыл бұрын
some OCD is good, but just remember its an old used chest and that is what you need to keep in mind
@sethnangie2 жыл бұрын
Why did you brush in instead of spray?
@ARayofSunlight2 жыл бұрын
Well... I didn’t want to deal with taping off the inside of the chest that day. But also, the videos where I brush the paint on tend to do better than when I spray it on. 🙈 Oh, and this paint says it self levels, so I wanted to see how well it worked. If it was for myself, I probably would have sucked it up and taped off so I could spray it.
