Actual dialogue from that comic after having the suit on for a minute or two: "YEEEOOWW!" "Wedgie-sense...tingling. I...gotta get this thing off of me!" "I can feel it...like a living thing...in my head...feeding on my own thoughts..." "...And that's just not fair to do to a sentient life-form." @@Ben_Kimber Comics do a thing called "retroactive continuity", aka retcon. Start with a story from thirty years ago that does its thing and explains everything just fine (Spidey gets the suit in Secret Wars). Then in the present day, a writer does a new story that changes events in the original (Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars retells Secret Wars with Deadpool involved, during which he gets the suit first). It's actually on full display in this movie when they cram Sandman into Ben Parker's death scene. It's considered part of continuity, but the new elements are added retroactively. Kinda annoying IMO, but comics do what comics do.

@@Karma-pq9fi At least to me it feels like the Peters from the end of all 3 movies are basically the same person, they would act in the same way in any scenario. Harry starts as a party boy with an inferiority complex, then he becomes head of a corporation and an avenger of a father who just abused him (basically he tries to become his father), then he gives up his life to save Peter (the one who made him feel inferior AND the one who he blames for his father's death). We see Peter experiencing a lot: he loses someone (Ben, Otto, Harry), learns to "not be selfish" and to use his powers for good (Wrestler, retired, black costume), and "gets the girl" (MJ) in every movie in different orders, that's his Arc (circle). He learns to let go of his desire for revenge against the one who killed Uncle Ben in Movie 1 AND 3. Peter changes inside every movie but not over the course of them, I think? If you were to skip Movie 2 the only one that would look weird based on how he acts would be Harry. He alone has an Arc that spans all 3 movies. At least that's how I felt watching them (years ago).
@Karma-pq9fi2 жыл бұрын
@@maurobianchin8862 Harry starts as someone who wants to impress his father which is why he dates MJ. Losing his father made him want to take up his fathers business but also find Spider-Man who he thinks kills his father. He then learns what his father did/was. In the end Harry learns and realizes that Peter and MJ are long life friends. Even if they tried to hurt each other they had to forgive themselves and move on. You said “the one that made him feel inferior” they both hurt each other on purpose revenge that’s literally the whole point. Harry himself didn’t want to believe his father killed himself but all the evidence pointed to it but he had it put into his head that he needed revenge. What happened to Peter in Spider-Man 1 had 0 to do with not being selfish it was taking responsibility. Taking responsibility for the powers that were put on him nothing about that says anything about selfishness. “Gets the girl in every movie” he only gets MJ in 2 and they are together in 3 but they have relationship problems like any other couple that exists on earth. He didn’t learn to let go of revenge in 1 what? The robber died he got what he wanted how is that letting go of revenge in anyway? He didn’t kill the robber but he’s dead. SM1 had literally 0 to do with revenge. I really think you need to rewatch these movies SM1 was about Peter taking responsibility responsibility for having to power to do the things no one else could the responsibility to bare the burden of Norman Osborn. The responsibility of protecting Mary Jane by pushing her away in his mind. SM2 is about Peter accepting the two sides Spider-Man and Peter and learning that even if he wants something (a normal life, a girlfriend, to do well in his class, show up on time, be a good friend) he has to do the right thing. To be a hero he has to give up the dreams he wants and endure. He was struggling to keep his lives separate but in the end accepted both Which also parallels with Otto. In the end even tho Peter went through all of those things he actually got a break and MJ accepted him and he accepted her. SM3 is about revenge and forgiveness for pretty much every character they willingly hurt each other and bottled up all their emotions. Peters actions resulted in created many lasting problems MJ, Harry, Eddie, Gwen. Venom itself is like a metaphor for that revenge pushing his emotions to the extreme. He learns that to move on he has to accept the things he has done and forgive himself. It’s what Harry, MJ, and Peter do at the end they forgive themselves then they forgive each other. This also extends to Sandman which is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movies where Peter forgives him. The scene is interpreted as Peter just being a hero and heroes have to forgive. He sees that he isn’t perfect and he makes mistakes and does awful things he sees Marco’s side. All of this is character progression he learns 3 different lessons in every movie. He took the responsibility but the responsibility was eating away at him. He accepted responsibility and both halves of his life which in turn made him cocky and think he could do anything he want. Which then made it for more easier for the symbiote to take control. You could say he learns that responsibility and giving up his dreams doesn’t automatically make him perfect he can still slip up. All of that is progression now where is he relearning the same lesson.

He believed in Mary Jane, and he couldn't possibly understand that things might not work out for her (they had for him after all, why not her), so he really believed it was just a minor setback, and when it passed, it'd not matter anymore, because things would work out. Yes, he should have been more considerate of her feelings in the moment, and he did get caught up in his own fame, but I think that's just him being dorky, oblivious Peter Parker, deep down, I think he still cares for her, he just lost sight of her personal journey, and became distracted by his own.

From the perspective of a Spiderman Comicbook fan: This movie tried to do too much, and sort of jammed a million pages of source material into one film. I respect what they were TRYING to do, and had they managed to pull it off, at the time, it would have been groundbreaking to see source material so closely guarded and used to inform the movie. These days we have the MCU to compare to, which has absolutely figured out the formula of how to put the comics on the big screen, and it involves NOT trying to jam it all into one movie, but to serialize the movies and make it so that you "can't miss" an episode of the MCU. But to help clarify a laundry list of things they tried to do in this movie, but fucked up: -Gwen Stacy is supposed to be Spiderman's first girlfriend. He's always loved MJ as the girl-next-door but she was always living her own life. -MJ married Jameson's son in the comics too who is a whole other complicated character with a deep storyline that involves him doing many space-bound hero antics. He returned from a space mission with the Symbiote (Venom) stowing away on his ship. This movie sort of failed to make that connection. -Eddie Brock is another complicated character, he's a tough reporter who likes to dig into deep stuff and it gets him in trouble, legally and with villains etc. In the comics he's kind of a big tough-guy and not... topher grace-y at all. Long story short Spiderman puts him in jail, and Eddie Brock spends his WHOLE time stewing on how much he hates Spiderman and focuses on "When I get out I'mma kill him." enery. Works out, gets swole. Ties into next point. -The Black Suit spiderman was a huge series and arc in the comics where spiderman became darker and edgier and was more of an anti-hero doing more violent and over-the-top Punisher-level crime fighting. The suit made ALL of his abilities stronger, which the movie didn't convey well. He learns it's the symbiote that Jameson's son brought back, and manages to rid himself of the black suit and return to being himself. The suit however wants revenge against spiderman for rejecting him. He finds Eddie Brock in prison and fuses with him to use Eddie's anger to hunt down spiderman as the villain Venom. -Sandman is a WHOLE villain with his own arc. This movie kinda did him dirty. They just straight up ret-conned him into Uncle Ben's murderer to fit with the comics and give spiderman a complicated narrative where he might want to kill Flint. This arc was just so badly handled. -Topher Grace Venom is .... AWWWWFUL. Venom is one of the most popular character in the spiderman continuity and fans hated this version of venom. He was soft, had very weak motivations and basically just came off as a creepy space alien. -Spiderman and MJ get married, and Gwen is more... acceptably out of the picture in the comics. It was a truly amazing comic moment that Peter and MJ got married. This movie made it look like 'Great MJ just settled for this abusive asshole who literally hit her (with super-strength) in the same movie. Yay, so happy for them >.> -Harry. There's so much gone wrong with Harry's story in this movie. But they were trying to fix and retcon the earlier movies to be more comic-accurate.. and it just really didn't work with the story they already set up. In the comics Norman and Harry Ozbourne work often together as villains, and the relationship they have with Peter is deeply tragic. There's much more but you get the point. They were trying REALLY hard to fix / force the comic continuity into the films. I don't know the inside story as to why this happened... I imagine there was a lot of pressure to appease the fans and give them everything. Black Suit spiderman, Venom, Sandman, Harry Ozbourne, Gwen Stacy, MJ... They took on too much and failed to deliver. Of course we got a great meme of a movie, a legendary piece of bad film that'll stay in our hearts. The MCU learned from this, i believe. What would be the MCU in the future is when these mistakes would be treated with better respect. It's okay to set something up for a later movie, and to leave viewers in the dark if they didn't see the lead-up. That's serialization and it works for comic book movies, because that's how comic books are. Spiderman should have gotten the black suit in the last movie, maybe. When his powers were failing, that would give him a great motivation to accept the black suit's powers and get addicted to it and all that. Then we'd see it pay off in this movie when it turns out it's effecting who he is, and altering his mood... but as you noticed... he was ALREADY being a piece of crap in this movie before the black suit showed up. Anyway, gigantic info dump, just wanted to throw in an... explanation about everything you screamed "WHY!?!" at in this movie. Onward to the Andrew Garfield movies. They have their own problems, but I honestly think they went in the right direction... They just kinda messed up different aspects. But it all pays off when we get Underoos! in the MCU.

@KitZunekaze2 жыл бұрын
@@dennislopez1272 To be fair I was not trying to claim that the only correct thing to do is to copy the comics perfectly. I'm saying Spiderman 3 was a mess because it tried to do that all in one movie, and it was not a great mesh. The comics ret-con stuff all the time too, so the idea that the MCU is worse than the source material is a bit of a stretch. What they've done is great now though, as they've introduced the multiverse we now have reasons to understand why this continuity is different from the comics, and comic fans can't ignore that since the multiverse has been used to excuse all kinds of insane twists on Marvel properties. I cannot get behind the idea that the MCU movies are only a terrible mess. They're the best continuity of comic-book movies we've ever seen. So I'm not on board for the nit-picking of it into oblivion. Are they perfect? No, far from it. But they're not horrible by any stretch of the imagination.
@dennislopez12722 жыл бұрын
It's the unnecessary amount they do it. The comics industry is a disaster because of the amount they retcon comics. I understand having to do it sometimes but there's a reason the industry is falling apart. There's an astonishing amount of writers that are lazy and don't care about writing new stories that are worth telling. Sorry but them having to start from scratch a comic like Captain Marvel 9 times should be alarming to anyone. Haven't bought comics in years for a reason. It's just bad now. Spiderman series has been good even though there's been a decent amount of retconning. They finally gave Tom Hollands character a true good origin story. Never understood them pushing the Tony Stark stuff. It always felt forced and not genuine. Aunt Mae angle finally gave him a true heros journey. Not against telling a fresh story. Just not a bad one. Peter is not a bad person at all, he is exactly alike to superman, pure of heart, genuine, humble and a good person. This girl didnt watch this movie and so didnt you, she doesnt even know what the symbiote is, it is species of extraterrestrial parasitic life forms who control its hosts or lives in harmony, the moment peter touched, it binded itself to peter and started to change him, but as peter was a noble person and super strong of character for his principles as spiderman the symbiote had trouble trying to convert him in a horrible person and the fully for of venom where venom could take fullcontrol, but it was achieving it until peter snap out of it, The girl doesnt have the slightest idea of the movie she watched , the thing is that venom influences the host to kill and be aggressive which while Eddie doesn’t have a problem with it and is inmedeately turned in a full capacity, Peter does, so he would constantly be at odds with Venom for the radical changes in attitude.

Wasn't the symbiote (Venom) with Peter since the beginning of the movie. The carelessness, arrogance, inattentiveness, ire, and overall unlike Peter's demeanor could easily be understood as the symbiote's influence; unless you think it has been waiting with bated breath hidden in his room patiently with no input since Peter accidently picked it up; like a good symbiote boy. How easily Peter background is forgotten, the moment he shows his flaws, as if the need to vent is more cathartic than the memories of Peter's true motives. Not even Aunt May's vouching for him could stop the causal emotional train.

Flint Marco's first scene as sand man affects me emotionally a lot more than it should. The music and the visual symbolism of a broken man pulling himself together for his kid resonates with a lot of parents I think. The only time she comes to him to vent was when she had the paper comment on her singing which is realistic did you expect her not to go to her boyfriend about her problems and not talk about it? “You should’ve said this a long time ago” he couldn’t. Keep in mind Norman’s final words were “don’t tell Harry” and Peter was keeping that promise to spare Harry any pain even though it affected their friendship “Are we ever gonna talk about what that thing is?” Apparently it’s some type of particle accelerator. What they were doing with it or why it was there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In a movie full of memes, that Sandman forming scene is genuinely beautiful. Not many superhero movies can achieve or even bother attempting such a scene Aww man they cut out the best transition!! The “where am I?” as the black suit theme plays and they reveal the new look is SO GOOD!!! I’ve been listening to James Brown’s Get Up and Drive That Funky Soul quite a bit lately and every time I get to that sexy sax part I start doing the Bully Maguire dance 🤣🤣 I can’t help it “Why does he all of a sudden play the piano?” If you recall in Spider-Man 2 during the bank scene Aunt May says “I’m giving piano lessons again” so it’s fair to say she probably taught Peter “Why did they give him fangs” from what I hear an initial idea was that Peter would pull Eddie out of the symbiote but it would be just his skeleton and his teeth would’ve all been turned into sharp teeth as a way to show how the symbiote had, quite literally, consumed Eddie While I agree this movie does get kinda messy, I still think it’s great. I don’t think it’s as bad as people say and honestly it’s a pretty fitting conclusion to this trilogy. And in regards to the comics, the symbiote ends up binding with Peter when he’s on another planet. The meteor thing was just the movie’s super convenient way of getting the symbiote to Peter. In some of the animated series John Jameson is on an expedition in space and in some form or another it gets on the spaceship and they bring it back to Earth, which honestly makes more sense than the tiny meteor

The first half of this reaction reads like a cinematic version of the 'Men: We Don't Know What We Did' meme from Family Guy. Like goddamn, you did not want to give even a shred of credit to Peter from the moment this movie started. He's definitely making mistakes, but you're like, "There he is, not being there for her in her depressing time of need, and he's off being a hero with all the attention.. Yeah, I bet you feel really good about yourself right now Peter, how about you go console the woman you want to marry?" and I'm thinking, you do realize that at this point in time, the only thing that he knows about Mary Jane's struggles is that she got a single bad review in a newspaper? You don't think, given that Peter is actively slandered every single day by the front page of New York's largest newspaper, that he might not see a single isolated poor review as being something she can't handle? Also ignoring that he tried consoling her about the review in their previous scene together and she immediately shut him down by telling him that she didn't want to be consoled - which you agreed with? Like, what do you want from the guy?

It's the same reason for this scene in 22:50. Peter would break out a textbook to explain why the back row couldn't hear MJ, rather than tell her that she wasn't a Broadway singer. Her name is taken off the theatre at the same moment her boyfriend gets the Key to the City? For a girl who was abused by her drunken dad, it's a pretty high pedestal to fall off. Peter and MJ is this version? They loved each other when nobody else really did. So when someone else did, it's a shock to the system.

Maybe not bad, but far from good too. At best it's okay. And it really is because of the drama behind the scenes. Sony wanted Venom in cause they wanted to push a separate Venom franchise even back then, Raimi wanted Sandman, cause it's another of Silver Age villains he grew up with and didn't even really get or know how to write Venom. Ahh a messy but fun movie. There's actually a different version called the Editors Cut, which I prefer. It's not much different (I actually think it's shorter). They cut out the scene with the butler telling Harry about his dad, and replaced it with a scene of Harry choosing to forgive Peter on his own. They also added a scene where Sandman transforms into a sand castle at a playground where his daughter is at, really heartfelt scene. And they re arranged the scenes in the middle of the movie where Peter has the black suit. In the theatrical version MJ fake breaks up with Peter, he puts on the suit, Peter fights Harry, Peter gets Eddie fired, then the dance down the street. Whereas in the Editors cut it's better paced. MJ fake breaks up, Peter puts on suit, gets Eddie fired, takes off suit, talks to Harry in cafe, puts on suit again, fights Harry, then the dance down the street. I prefer this version, as it presents Peter using the suit as sort of a drug to make himself feel better. The only change I didn't like was the removal of the Aunt May scene towards the end, the "You start with the hardest part... You forgive yourself" scene was removed, and it sucks because it's probably the best scene in the movie.

I agree that these characters have flaws but not in the same sense that is illustrated in this trilogy. Especially movies made after... I'd say 2012? There was a huge cultural shift, and people are not as redeemable in the eyes of society as they once were. Back when this trilogy was made it was interesting to explore how a normal guy would react to these extraordinary circumstances. It shows his problems from start to finish, and they are REAL. This movie (while far from perfect) does a great job of symbolizing substance abuse. Now we have characters like Rey Skywalker, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Tom Holland's Spider-Man (to name a few) with little to no flaws. The flaws they do have are very cliché and surface level. I mean believe what you want, but there is a stark difference in how this trilogy handles flaws compared to nowadays (especially Marvel/Star Wars), and in my opinion it is a much better approach.

In the comics Spider-Man found the Venom symbiote inside an alien structure while he was in space fighting super villains alongside the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers after they were all abducted by an otherdimensional being called the Beyonder. Naturally, that couldn't happen in this movie so I guess the writers decided to just have the symbiote randomly land on Earth very close to Peter. "Since when does Topher have powers?" The Venom symbiote has some very confusing lore around it. Not only does it enhance the host's strength and stuff, it also remembers its previous hosts. In some iterations, it can even transfer its knowledge through different universes, it's like a hivemind thing. It forms a bond with its previous body and gains its knowledge, as well as its powers in some way. Venom really likes Peter, but he likes Eddie way more. Some iterations of Venom like other characters, like Flash (the bully from the first movie) or Harry Osborn. This Venom slings on "webs", even though Eddie can't shoot webs, because it remembers Peter doing something like that. I think they were actually strands of the symbiote, but I might be wrong. But I honestly feel like Venom's powers aren't the most important thing about him. The symbiote is supposed to be an allegory for substance abuse and depression and stuff. They couldn't do adult themes at the time because the company's policy on such topics was really strict. That was around the time when the Joker was an actual clown with electric buzzers and spray flowers. They even had to abandon an ongoing arc where Harry did drugs. When the restriction dropped, all hell broke loose with all sorts of dark storylines. The thing with Venom is that it's supposed to amplify all the emotions of the host as well, so when Peter feels angry, vengeful, hateful, depressed, etc. it _really_ adds to that. I feel like they did the character dirty by doing all the cringe dancing stuff, as well as the next time with all the Tom Hardy "comedy". The closest they came to actually portraying Venom was when Bully Maguire hurt MJ and realised that's not who he is. That's actually a really powerful message, which was completely tainted by the cringe. Obviously, there has to be an external battle with a comic book villain at some point, but the most important battle should be inside Peter's head. He has to overcome the dark side in order to defeat the real villain here. It could be a really cool psychological story, and I honestly feel like the MCU Peter is ready. The meta parameters all seem to be in order, they already showed some serious character study with overcoming PTSD (Thor still being worthy, Wanda abandoning Westview, etc.) so who knows. Peter himself is perfectly primed for that arc, he has lost literally everything in his life and has already come pretty close to letting the dark thoughts overtake him by almost killing Norman. If he actually becomes a bad person for a long time, maybe even more than one movie, and they really show it from his point of view, show he's suffering from that, they might have a better movie than NWH. I really hope they go this route and don't spam Spider-Verse stuff for a change. They have already made 3 games and 2 animated movies about that, they don't need to do it just yet. As cool as it would be to see a bunch of live-action Spider-people in the MCU, the next arc has to be this one.

In the comic books, the symbiote never fell from the sky, peter actually first encountered it during one of the first big crossover events where all the marvel superheros went to space, so you can kind of tell that there wasn't really a good way they could think of to get it on earth in this movie. The Venom movie does a lot better of a job of getting the symbiote to earth believably, and also does a much better job of portraying the character as he is in the comics. I would definitely recommend you watch that movie and it's sequel at some point as while they are not high-class cinema by any means they are really fun movies.

The thing is that Peter has been catalogued as a loser his whole life and now that he has some praise as Spiderman it got to him but he forgot that the people love Spiderman and not Peter Parker. We're human and it happens to us as people. So yeah he became a jerk but he's human and the symbiote (black goo) only enhanced his ego because it gave him even more power. And yes Venom, (the symbiote) is a being of it's own and since Peter was able to reject it, the symbiote, pretty much became that toxic ex that wants to get back at you after a bad breakup, hence, why Eddie Brock became the perfect host for it. Edit - And yes I am biased because Peter and Spiderman are my favorite characters from any superhero comic or movie so fight me >:O

Nat, this is a kind critic/suggestion: try not to ask your fiance what he thinks about a movie. Or ask him not to comment until you're done watching yourself. Sometimes other people's opinion will affect the way you think of something. I agree that this movie is chaotic and comical (I kinda hugely disappointed when I watched it the first time), but not as bad as you think it was. I thought its a fair judgment until you said the second one was "cheesy too". And these whole opinion came from your fiance. It might be your sole opinion too, but knowing your fiance said it to you, how can I know its your pure thoughts 🤷♂️ So yea, just an advice to keep this reaction is purely you😊

@@takewhataway It is cheesy, but its cheesy in a comic book stylized way. I think some people can't see that and immediately think "oh, this so bad" because they take themselves too serious and cant have fun with a fun film.

@@takewhataway take her criticism of the zoom in on sandmans eyes. Its literally inspired and filmed like a comic book panel. Not cheesy at all, it's a stylized choice. Classic Raimi as well, because his directing is influenced by comic books themselves.

The Sandman was always my favorite villain. I was a little disappointed in how depressing they made him in this movie, but otherwise I thought Thomas Haden Church did a great job. And I still enjoyed that this movie stayed truer to the comics than any of the later movies do, even though it's not very good.

Mary Jane is so annoying. She gets mad that he has to be Spider-Man and put his life on the line and she wants him to be at her plays and dates when New York needs to be saved every night. And how many times did MJ avoid and date other guys throughout the series and Spidey shares one kiss for publicity. Not that he was right for doing that but I think MJ is a hypocrite for being upset with Peter all the time even after she finds out how great his responsibility is... She still wants him to be normal. Superheroes aren't normal. Fav line: 22:22

@waldoman72 жыл бұрын
You may remember that Peter talked about being way stronger with the suit. It gives superstrength, and furthermore having Peter for it's first bonded host shaped it, which is why it grants spider-like powers to future hosts. Also, eddy brock turns out to be uniquely well suited to it, able to bond more fully. So Venom(eddie) is stronger than Spiderman, though black suit Spiderman was stronger than that with the combined power.

I hate this Mary Jane so much man, she's like: "I date a super hero and I know that he is busy with his duties and that being a hero requires a lot of responsibility, but even so, I keep arguing about why he doesn't go on dates because he's busy with his duties, because for me my whims is more important than saving the world and preventing innocent people from being killed"
