In canon, Dr Strange lived a subjective 10 years in that time loop with Dormammu, trying everything he learned and everything he could think of to fight back. That's a big reason why Doctor Strange is so powerful. There's no training so thorough as live-fire training that resets every time you die. I love Doctor Strange! I wasn't super high on his movie but it was still a good introduction to him. In the comics he's more like a hyper-altruistic magic MacGyver, who doesn't take other powerful beings, seriously. I think what they did with him in Thor Ragnarok was much more true to character, with how he treats gods, demons and other super powered beings.

@Cyberdemon Mike My frustration with it was that Dormamu, for such a terrible, 'all-powerful' (though apparently less powerful than a single Infinity Stone) antagonist, ended up being such a one-dimensional and facile villain! Nothing said that he had to keep killing Strange _quickly_ -- Why not give the Doctor an excruciatingly painful death that takes a couple of months to finally kill him, and then do _that_ a few hundred times, over and over and over, and see just who wants to keep that temporal loop going ad infinitum... 🤔🙄🤨
@brtle3 жыл бұрын
@Cyberdemon Mike Kaecilius and Dormamu are, essentially, just two aspects of the same villain/antagonist. Mads' character is basically just a tool/puppet for his master's use; one that allows Dormamu to work within Earth's magical protections to help bring them down and facilitate the ultimate invasion.

A few basic changes from the comic book. Wong was Strange's butler, the Ancient One was a male Tibetan, Dormammu had a body and a flaming head, Mordo was his major enemy, and if you rewatch Winter Soldier, you'll hear Stephen Strange on the list that Hydra intended to kill.

I have a "slight" issue with the writers who had The Ancient One say "Not anymore, surely." When Strange said Doctor actually. Here's why. There are certain careers that a person practices that you then become. As an example: a cop is always a cop, or a soldier. Even if they are injured and cannot be "active" they're still cops or soldiers. Most especially if they have become important; like a high ranking chief of police or a general or something along those lines. They may no longer be on active duty, but they'll still receive professional benefits. Strange wasn't fired or anything of that sort, he was injured. Injury does not take away his medical licence, it just means he's unable to practice until he's healed. He's still a Doctor. He can be consulted, he can give advice legally and he can actually still prescribe medicine legally; he just can't operate on people ethically.

This was another awesome surprise from Marvel Studios. The 1960s version in the comics drew a lot of art inspiration from the psychedelic stoner art of the day. The whole thing was pretty surrealistic and very creative. The fact that the film captured so much of that aesthetic, so well, was just awesome. :) Wong is a real character in the Marvel Comics, and Wong is the character's actual name.
