The snap zooms and stylized shots are trademark Sam Raimi and not necessarily an early 2000's thing. You can see it all over his other work (Evil Dead, Darkman, Drag me to Hell). It works perfectly for the superhero genre & stylization to that degree is sorely lacking from modern comic book/MCU movies.
@emessar
@emessar 2 жыл бұрын
Ya beat me to it. I think a lot of it was him trying to bring the comic book feel alive, which adds its own stylization. It was also following the Batman movies ... and that likely influenced how Rami approached it, or maybe influenced some of the notes from the studio execs.
@Onaterdem
@Onaterdem 2 жыл бұрын
It is also a 1990s/early 2000s thing too, that "overdramatic" feel, if you know what I mean. While Raimi has his own overdramatization style, that same feeling is present in a lot of movies/shows from that age, even in WandaVision's 90s/early 2000s episode.

The crash zooms are definitely Raimi's signature, but I'd say the scene transitions are very much of the times (though they are still pretty creative for what it's worth). I think the best example of Raimi's unique voice is in the final "...Oh." moment before Norman gets impaled. It's such a unique way of editing that moment which is unlike any other villain death I can think of.

"Oh, he has to do a costume change first!" Love Raimi's homage to the Richard Donner Superman in that shot. "Great job everybody!" The people of NYC rallying behind Spidey is one of the best aspects of Raimi's movies. It really touches to the core of the character as the 'friendly neighborhood Spiderman', a true hero of the people. Every Spiderman incarnation focuses on a different aspect of Peter, and Raimi's is one of the darkest, balancing Pete's anger with his heroism. He is strong enough to beat his villains to death if he wanted to, but holds himself back even at the risk of his own life.

The fact that Willem Dafoe was not only able to slip effortlessly back into the role of Green Goblin in No Way Home but also far exceed his performance and level of menace is nothing short of incredible. He might not have the best motivation or plan (in fact, little to no reasoning at all, he's just a psycho) but holy shit is he good at the role. He has such a wide range that you can effortlessly see him as a confused and scared mentally ill old guy and a menacing murderous supervillain. You may argue there were better written villains in terms of parallels with the protagonist and stuff, but he will always be _the_ Green Goblin.

I honestly really like the relationship between Peter and Norman in the film. They genuinely respected one another (even if it was at Harry’s expense) until each of their identities are exposed to the other and until the Goblin persona won out Norman was distraught about the idea of hurting Peter. It’s a tragic example of never meeting your “heroes” from Peter’s point of view and a testament to how far gone Norman is in his insanity and lust for power that he’s willingly to kill one of the few people he forged a genuine connection with. It’s such an amazing hero-villain dynamic

America really needed this movie especially after the events of 9/11. A lot of scenes in this movie is suppose to be symbolic of americans coming together and facing adversities like the NY citizens helping fend off Goblin on the bridge. After 9/11, a lot of shows and movies were either redone, delayed, or even cancelled and this movie was affected too. They had to cut and redo lot of scenes that had the World Trade Center in the shots. In fact in the original movie poster, you can see the Twin Towers reflection in Spidermans mask

14:20 Fun fact: in the Ultimate line of comics, the wrestling venue came back in an interesting way. It turned out that in a string of purchases, Kingpin bought out the amateur wrestling company. And the "Spider-Man" identity was a registered trademark under their name, for merchandise rights. So, unable to get Spider-Man back _conventionally,_ decided to capitalize on a recent upswing of popularity Peter was enjoying by merchandising the hell out of him.

As a HUGE Spider-Man fan, this movie holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, I read plenty of different comics, but Spidey was my favorite, hands down. So, in 2002, as a nerdy high school kid, when I heard they were making this movie, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I saw it on opening night and then proceeded to go see it in theaters NINE MORE TIMES. Yeah, it is much cheesier compared to the MCU films, but as a first iteration of Spidey on the big screen, it is nearly perfect in my eyes. Glad to spend some time reliving that joy watching it along with you, Natalie.

I absolutely love this trilogy. Tom Holland’s has been good but Tobey’s is just S Tier “His villain arc is beginning real quick” kinda poetic that the hero and villain are created on the same night 10:08 “wait the barbs are facing the wrong wa-“ One of my favorite comments I’ve seen about the wrestling scene is one that said “can you imagine being in the crowd that night and now you get to tell people you knew about Spider-Man when he was underground wrestler” Danny Elfman absolutely killed the score for this movie!! A classic JK Simmons is the absolute best J. Jonah ever. The casting in this movie is phenomenal As a kid Osborn’s arc never made much sense to me, it was just oh he’s crazy, ok. But watching this as an adult that board meeting scene hurts. The corporate world fucked over Osborn so his vengeance is justified to me I love Dafoe’s speeches in this movie! I’ve memorized every single one, they’re that good The New Yorkers on the bridge throwing stuff was added as a sort of unification for New York after 9/11. Great scene A small detail not many notice is after they kiss, MJ touches her lips, has a realization of sorts and then turns to Peter hinting that she felt that it was similar to Spider-Man’s so she’s starting to wonder if they’re the same person Can’t wait to see Nat’s reactions to the rest of the trilogy

That's because the cheesy moments are balanced with honest human drama, and just great storytelling. Sam Raimi understood the heart and soul of Peter Parker's story better than any director so far. It was the first time anybody had ever seen Spider-Man in live action swinging amongst skyscrapers, but more importantly, people connected to it on an emotional level. The snap zooms and other stylized camera moves are among his goto filmmaking tricks. Bruce Campbell- the MC at the wrestling match is a Raimi staple and either stars or cameos in many of his films. Prior to Spiderman- Raimi had directed and co-written Darkman- a superhero film starring Liam Neeson an Frances McDormand. Yup.

Just FYI, Nat - the board doesn't decide to sell a company, the shareholders do. The board is restricted to recommending a sale, or not. Sometimes the board will be unanimous, sometimes not, but there will be a vote and the chairman would have a deciding vote. The chairman is not always the CEO. If Osborn started the business he would probably have tried to maintain a position as not only the majority shareholder but possibly even a 75% shareholder so he can always outvote all the other shareholders, but he still only gets one vote as a director. He could be voted out as CEO by the board but then as majority shareholder he can sack the board and have himself reappointed by the new board. The movie trope (it happens in _Dark Knight Rises_ too) in which the CEO and founder of the company is just ousted by the board results from poor understanding of company law on the part of screenwriters - or maybe they just don't care.

To understand and fully appreciate No Way Home, you will need to see this movie's two sequels, as well as the two Andrew Garfield films and the two Venom films. This movie was the one that got me into Marvel, so it holds a special place in my heart. Maguire will always be my Spider-Man, even though I love both Garfield and Holland. Aunt May is usually depicted as that old, she and Uncle Ben were always kind of depicted as akin to grandparents who took Peter in. Peter catching all of the food on MJ's lunch tray was done completely practically, without any CGI effects. Tobey Maguire had his hand tapped to the tray but that was it.
