Yes, Rem is so great for him, being clingy being obsessive, idealizing him, having co-dependency on him to point she neglects her sister and roswaal of love and only focuses it on Subaru and uses him to cover up her own problems meanwhile Subaru begs Rem to keep being this same type of person, RIGHT great choice to never grow as an individual. Subaru was doing the same but one difference is, He learned and accepted with Emilia and grew because of Emilia

If Rem is like the same person you claim to be then my best counter is the Sloth IF Story, written by the author of ReZero, Rem is in no way as obsessive and clingy as she is in the main story. If anything, Subaru declared to Rem that he didn’t felt guilty abandoning Emilia and everyone to run off with Rem and started a new life. Subaru let Rem know that he loved only her and she shouldn’t feel so insecure about their relationship.

Major spoilers All right so we know that rem is awake at the end of arc sex but no longer remember Subaru. What if she never is able to regain her memories because both her name and memories were eaten she is unable to regain both of them no matter what happens. New rem ends up joining up with Subaru and the rest and he at first is overjoyed that she is back. However she begins developing a different personality without the events of her backstory to influence her and becomes almost a different person. Subaru continues to treat her like he did in the old rem expecting her to act the same. She eventually get fed up with us gets pissed and essentially tells him to quit it. he then goes and gets his Re:ZERO speech and figures out how to solve the arc and repair their relationship. However after that he’s forced To acknowledge that the rem he loved is dead. And that it is set in stone not even with his power can he bring her back he is forced to be happy that he brought rem back to life even in her new changed form but the woman he loved whose hero he was is dead and he couldn’t manage to save her. Every time he looks at rem he is reminded of that fact that one time he was not strong enough to save everyone and in the end it cost him the woman he loved. Now that at least for me feels cruel enough to fit in Re:ZERO. And could still fit with the theme of moving on because unlike all of the people who lost someone they loved and became obsessed maniacs trying to save them. Subaru is forced to except his failure and can still live a happy life with Emela Who is the author clearly is in love with

Yeah, I could honestly see this being the kind of thing that would happen. It's different to the theory I'm currently going with (which will be in the next Rem video) but I could easily see you being right - it's the kind of thing that would fit with the general feel and themes of Re:Zero and could be interesting for the plot, plus it would be really sad!

i think emilia wont be against sharing subaru with rem because she knew how important she is to him, but deep inside she would also feel the complicated feelings of "i want to be viewed like someone special" and arent sure if she is truly happy, if the triangle goes on seriously. what will probably happen though should be rem being able to grow and subaru making a vow to make her happy as family rather than happy as a wife. something along those lines.

Yeah, the thing is, most people aren't going to be happy with sharing the person they love romantically. If anything, it's normal that Emilia would want to have a normal relationship where he 'chose her', and more unusual that Rem would be OK with being second choice - that being something particular to the way Rem feels about herself that is not supposed to be a good thing for her.

I think the OT3 route would be the best for Emilia, Rem and Subaru. And I think Tappei can still make it work while subverting and deconstructing the tropes of Isekai regardless by showing the threeway relationship _actually being built and worked on_ and not just be a mere Isekai fantasy (though in my experience with Isekai, it's not common to get a Harem ending and the main guy mostly ends with the "main heroine" of the story), but rather a proper relationship between three people that needs to be properly built upon and cared for... Like actual, real relationship are built. I do like your ideas for plot-related reasons to deconstruct the concept itself, tho. In fact, it just makes me all the more eager to watch the next arcs of the story develop!

I think this is a really interesting point, because while people often list the killing as one of Subaru’s reasons for rejecting Rem after the From Zero speech, Subaru himself pretty much never seems to think about that incident when his feelings about Rem are being depicted (at least in the LN). He seems to totally move past it by the end of arc 2, and I honestly found that a really admirable element of his character.

Rem was rejected and people need to get over it. Even she was able to see that she was rejected. The only reason Tappei has left some hope for Rem fans is so that they don't end up dropping the novels. But when it comes to anime Tappei had a say in excluding the scene where Rem agrees to polygamy and other wishy-washy shit. That's because anime is the final product and it's gonna be like how Tappei wanted to write the story. Anyways Emilia and Jealousy are two things that don't go well together. She's the most humble and kindest person in Rezero.

Tappei wrote that Ln vol way before rem got her popularity, so saying he wrote that only to satisfy rem fans is kinda a stretch, since rem wasn't that popular back then as rem got her popularity when the anime came out.

dunno bro, if subaru, the man himself says he loves Rem who are we to argue about? For sure its pretty unlikely that the one ending with subaru in the main route is Rem, and everybody kinda knows it since we already have Rem route. But even ending with Emilia, subaru's feelings to Rem are a fact and as this whole video argued this can bring a very interesting plot to the series. Subaru falling for Rem is also according to the fact that Tappei likes to write his characters her as real persons would behave, considering everything he went through with her. thats why it don't really seem like just fanservice

@@AbrahamSamma well, things happen in quite a different order in the web novel to in the anime (which is based on the light novels, but there aren't English translations of all of arc 4 of the LNs yet, so unless you speak Japanese the web novel is the way to get further in the story as there are fan translations of arcs 4, 5 and 6). The anime is up to about chapter 86 of arc 4 but it will be much less confusing to go back to the start of arc 4 and read it all. I have recorded the first 7 chapters so far as an audiobook if you want to get an idea of what the web novel is like.

Concerning the theory of Ram and Rem being targeted by Cult to mitigate Oni threat... something bothers me since arc 3. It was Al's reaction to learning both sisters are alive. When meeting Rem at the gates of Priscilla mansion he addressed her as "You must be Ram". He was under assumption that Rem should be dead. It would be understandable if he was surprised Ram survived with her horn cut as she should be the priority target, right? So, what if Rem was the actual target all along? Maybe because it was predicted she would be someone distracting Subaru from Emilia. Or not... On the main topic, I'm not sure I agree Rem's devotion is a bad thing. The nuance was pointed out by Ram, she noticed Rem has changed after meeting Subaru, as she started acting out of her own wishes. Made Ram feel jealous, too. The whole "I can be your second wife" thing is in fact a step forward for Rem, meaning she is not going to step aside and fight on (not to mention Subaru doesn't mind her fighting Emilia for him). As we say "Appetite comes during the meal", meaning the ambition grows as progress goes.

Good video. While I don’t agree with everything I do understand where you’re coming from. While I do fully expect it to end with Emilia, I still feel Rem is also a good choice. Unfortunately I have no counter arguments, this video has put more into perspective for me. I am a Rem fan, but I do like Emilia. Main reason for that is, while yes, her devotion and love for Subaru is nice, I didn’t fall in love with her till the episode From Zero. From that point, including after reading some exclusive stuff from the web novel, light novel, and Manga, I saw what her love really was, and it was one of the sweetest I’ve ever seen in fiction ever. Loving him and being so devoted to her, even though she knows he will never look her way, but still supporting him and his love for Emilia, is what made me fall in love with her. Many Rem fans completely miss the entire point of the scene, including why Subaru said what he said. If at that moment he said he loved Rem, not Emilia, she probably would have lost some respect for him, since that still would have been abandoning her. The Subaru that Rem loves is the Subaru that loves Emilia. Even though it pains her dearly, that’s how she wants it. That’s why I love her over Emilia. I’m only in season 2, so I don’t know what happens more to develop him and Emilia, so maybe I’ll end up loving her then, but I have no idea. While this is why I love Rem, it does tear me up inside. It breaks me more than anything. I guess I just tend to gravitate towards tragic characters like that. Thinking about certain lines she says still hurts me. Such as in the Manga where she wondered if she had the right to dream a little about the possibility about running away, despite her know it wasn’t right. And another scene when she gets attacked by Gluttony in the light novel and Manga where she hopes when Subaru finds that she’s gone it sends a ripple through his heart. I love these lines, but they’re so tragic. When I see these lines, it feels like that she might die as she keeps these feelings inside her to herself. They were the few selfish desires we see from her. I feel it’s alright to be a little selfish, so it’s alright to have such thoughts, I don’t think she’s a worse person for feeling those ways. She seems like she’s okay with Subaru and his decision, but she looks like she’s breaking to me. I don’t know, I guess that’s just what hurts me. I’ve never felt this way about a character before. Darn you Tappei, making me feel like that. To me, Rem’s entire situation regarding that ended up being the most tragic thing of all. Everything regarding Rem, and Ram, ended up being still being my favorite parts of the series, and now that she’s gone, I feel there is an impossible to fill hole. Sorry, that went on way longer than I wanted, probably had nothing to do with the video or anything at all, I’m really sorry about that. I’ve just been keeping all that to myself with no where to let it out, it’s all fiction in the end but I can’t help feel pain from it. In the end, it’s all up to Tappei, and whoever he brings it I’m sure will be good, I just have some fears. I definitely don’t want Rem to stay forgotten, or without memories, because that will basically mean the Rem we loved, that I loved is dead. Also, there is that Rem: IF story, but I’m going to be perfectly honest, while I liked the story, I’m not really interested in it much. While it depicts that perfect life Rem wants, that is not the Rem I fell in love with.

@Mally okay, first of all, Rem does NOT hate Emilia, I’ve been over this but you refuse to listen. There are many sources that have them interact. Also do remember there is a month time skip, so things more than likely happened there. Rem accepted Subaru’s flaws. She’s aware of them and even called him pathetic at one point, but she accepts that part of him, to which she helps him understand there’s more to him than what he’s seeing. Subaru also refers back Rem’s words when things get tough, because those words help lift him back up and keep moving forward. It’s exactly because of Rem’s words he’s able to say all that to Emilia. He doesn’t love because of devotion, he genuinely fell in love with her shortly after. The night under the Flugel Tree and when Rem “faked her death” was when Subaru genuinely started falling in love with her. If all Rem cared about was being with Subaru she could have chosen to run away with him. I also disagree on it being better that she doesn’t get her memories back. Again, that’s throwing away her character. Instead of her dealing with her issues and learning to get past them, it just throws them away. Rem NEVER hated Emilia. I’ve also seen the line you’re referring to with half devil. It also said her thoughts are conflicted. It’s never stated she hated her. Rem will be getting development, and if she starts slowly regaining her memories, whatever development she gets will still be there. He released a new Rem Side Story. Reveals something inside of her is preventing her from completely hating Subaru. Said everything I could say. I understand liking Emilia, she’s a great character, but there is no reason to discredit everything Rem does, just like I don’t discredit everything Emilia does. Rem and Subaru are very much alike, Subaru even used Rem’s words on Emilia, found that they didn’t work on her, and had to use his own approach. He would not have been able to do that without Rem. But I guess since she’s already done that for him, I guess we can just discard and throw her away like useless trash. Also, yes, wanting her to never get her memories back is wanting to discard her. Yes, throw away the girl who’s always felt worthless and inferior since she was born, excellent. Emilia deserves to be loved and cared for herself, just like Rem should as well. But that’s just my own opinion, I love both these characters and I want them both to be happy and loved, but erasing “Rem” I don’t feel is the answer. Anyway, I’m done, that’s it. I got nothing else.

I love Rem, so I have read up on her, read all the Rem related stuff and talked to people who know the source material more than me. I have also read up and learned other characters, like Emilia. Of course she accepted his flaws. She doesn’t need to state, the fact she was still there and still chose to love him is proof of that. Again, she said he was pathetic, that is a thing that happened. She would never say the things she said if she accept his flaws? What? That makes no sense. She said what he needed to hear at that moment. Even Subaru tried to use her words on Emilia. You’re the one not understanding her character. The moment you said Rem hates Emilia with a passion, was the moment you showed you understood nothing. I’m gonna throw that back on you, WHERE was it stated she hated her? I also have a source that says otherwise, you’ll disregard. It’s the side story “Rem’s very ordinary happy day”. Heck, I can pull up direct quotes if you want. Yeah, let’s do that. You’re probably not gonna read it anyway, but I implore you, I at least want you to understand that Rem does not hate Emilia. The proof is in these direct quotes from the CANON Side Story that TAPPEI wrote. If you don’t read these, these, I consider this conversation officially done, since that means you don’t WANT to understand, any further dialogue is absolutely meaningless and a waste of both of our time. -She had long silver hair and clear, bluish purple eyes. Even for Rem as someone who saw her older sister Ram as a superior being, this girl had such beautiful looks that you’d admire them spontaneously. Throughout this she’s also thinking about Subaru and Ram’s happiness as she made them go to the village together to improve their relationship. It was part of her plan for happiness. -However, that plan for happiness wasn’t just for Ram, but Emilia also had to work together with them-- This line here implies Emilia is part of that plan for happiness. -The maid’s rules were complicatedly inconsistent, but it was something Subaru and Ram were doing. She wanted to regard that relationship highly more than she wanted to protect those rules, although it would be disobeying what Frederica taught her. -During that time, nothing representing a conversation broke out. Rem notices this and experiences some awkwardness, and she felt very annoyed at her own passivity. -On the other side, it was also difficult for Emilia to understand her sense of distance with Rem. This situation was a manifestation of that incomprehensible distance, and Rem was disappointed in herself for allowing this to happen. [Emilia: ….It’s lovely doing this every now and then, drinking tea quietly, isn’t it?] [Emilia: Usually it would be Subaru talking a lot, and Ram would give me various advice during my studies, but when it’s with Rem, it’s reeeaally relaxing.] -Emilia lets out a faint smile, and Rem becomes surprised at the girl who said those words. After she took a peek at Emilia’s face, it seemed as if there were no signs of her lying in her expression. This meant that those words just now were here true feelings. -She was quite embarrassed with how she blamed herself for the silence and how she had looked downward, feeling worthless. These are Rem’s thoughts, by the way. Rem finally starts conversing, asking how her studies are going. --Come to think of it, Rem had avoided getting close to Emilia up until now. -That was because of Rem’s exclusively conservative thoughts. Only her irreplaceable sister and the surrounding world that was attached to her were important to Rem. -Rem wasn’t interested in Emilia, for better or worse. That’s why she tended to avoid participating and supporting more than what Roswaal had ordered her. Note it said she wasn’t interested in Emilia. Never states she hated her. And the reason she wasn’t interested in Emilia was not because of Emilia herself, not exclusively, but because her world was narrow. It was just her sister, Roswaal and the mansion, till Subaru expanded it. -And then Rem thought that Emilia didn’t need her assistance, as she was someone who was always positive and worked hard. Rem thought this type of relationship was for the best. However... [Rem: Emilia-sama, you’re really bad at singing.] She starts telling Emilia several things she knows about her. Throughout the month Rem learned about Emilia. [Emilia: Then I’ll get even too. Rem, you are actually a reeeaally obstinate person with your stubbornness. Also, you like things like picture books, poetry, and you’re a little bad with mayonnaise. And you’re really close with Subaru!] Afterward Emilia asked why said all that why she said that so suddenly. [Rem: There’s no big reason for it. It’s just that, I wanted to make sure of things. It’s been half a year since I met you, Emilia-sama, and yet, far more things have happened in this past month from that point.] -She sees that attitude and makes a decision. Back then, Rem was honestly apathetic towards Emilia’s courses of action, as long as Roswaal didn’t care about whether it was as he illustrated or not. -But, because this time she had feelings different from back then… Rem feels differently, THAT’s the biggest thing. Also again, never hated her. [Emilia: Please give me another cup of tea. For some reason, right now I want to drink Rem’s tea.] --In response to Emilia’s request, Rem started to prepare the tea with the deep affection that came from her heart. Hm, yeah, see no hate there. In fact, they’re getting along really well. But I doubt you read this.

@@Haseo8 Rem never accepted Subaru flaws, What Rem did is she "Acknowledge" Subaru that has flaws however she chooses to ignore that those flaws actually exist and example of this is how she ignores her own Sisters flaws that she isn't anything less then a perfect being. Rem can't see Subaru as anything less then a hero. It's not that rem "accepts" Subaru isn't anything less then perfect but rather she "acknowledges" and chooses to ignore that his bad traits actually exist in him that wouldn't make him anything less then her hero. Example of this is how she views up her sister, even when Subaru "cured" her from depression and redirected her entire obsession and idealization, she still viewed her sister as anything but perfect in her eyes still from the side stories. Another example is how Rem is not about "ADMONISHING" the awful person Subaru was being towards Emilia and everyone else. When Reinhardt tried to reason with Subaru, Subaru pushes him away and Rem rewards him with lap pillows as an reward because she believes her Hero is never in the wrong about anything with his actions. Julius and Emilia during events of Arc 3 admonished Subaru behavior. Rem did not admonish anything about Subaru bad behavior afterwards. Rem is about promoting the mental image that she views Subaru as hero that she fully has convinced herself to see from events of arc 2 and refuses to let it go because that is the Subaru she loves and only reason for her living. This is also similar to how Subaru viewed up Emilia until mid Arc 4 how he treated her like some goddess until he saw her short comings and he fell in love with her even harder because he thought those short comings were so amazing and lovely in his eyes. However he was still viewing her as princess in saving from his own obsession of trying to be a "white knight" until mid arc 4. Rem is doing exact samething however she is refusing to believe Subaru is anything but a hero and she is trying to get him to improve as one to cover up his own short comings as a person so in all. Rem is promoting her own self delusions of him being a hero while also enabling Subaru own self delusions of being a hero when he is just a normal human being that causes him further torment you see in the novels. Rem acknowledges he has flaws but refuses to believe they actually have to be worked through as you see Subaru not truly working on them. Example his own self esteem, his own self loathing, him thinking he can't have flaws, him hating his own flaws etc because this is not what Rem believes in and loves. Rem did not forgive Subaru for being this type of person where for example Subaru accepted Emilia for this being this way and forgave and loved her for it but also believes in Emilia determination and resolve to finish the trials but never expects anything more then what she can truly handle which you see in great rabbit fight instead of forcing her to do something he asks if theres anything she can do to help it would be wonderful however if not he would think of something. Also Rem does not take Emilia very kindly it's not like her view of Emilia went from "half devil" to "amazing person" Rem did not care about Emilia which is why she is happy there relationship broke apart, if she did care about Emilia she would of admonished Subaru's actions but never did. Rem also thinks very low of Emilia by thinking she can control and manipulate Emilia into forming a romantic relationship with Subaru because she is selfish and knows Subaru won't give up on Emilia and his love for her so she Fakes that death of hers to manipulate Subaru into one because she knows Subaru won't give up on Emilia. Her 2nd wife just proves this more because it's not she thinks she can't win against Emilia so she has no problems with it but rather she truly thinks it's okay for Subaru to do whatever he likes even if would hurt Emilia heart which it did.

She doesn’t admonish him for them because there’s no need. Doing so would make things worse and she understands that. Want to know exactly what would happen if she did that too? He would abandon her. Completely. Then he would be 100% alone and unable to ever recover. She doesn’t ignore his flaws, she chooses to see his good qualities, including the fact that he is a hero. That is an actual fact. Yes, he’s a normal human being, but that’s what makes him a hero in Rem’s eyes. He’s weak like she is, yet can still keep moving and do the impossible because he believes it right. She chooses to believe in him. She’s aware and acknowledge’s his flaws, but she doesn’t ignore them. Her only job given by Roswaal is to support him and stay out of his way. As for Tem viewing Ram that way, that’s a little different. That’s all she’s ever seen her sister, so that’s harder to change. She doesn’t thing Subaru could do no wrong, of course she knows that. Giving him a lap pillow isn’t rewarding him for never doing wrong, she gave it to him because he needed it after a hard day of training. Being supportive like that is hard coded into her dna as a maid. She even tells him she thinks he’s pathetic. But still chooses to be by his side anyway. Not because she’s ignoring that part of him, it’s because she loves him. And she doesn’t love him because she ignores those flaws. She sees them and knows despite them can do what he does. She fell in love his kindness, his determination, his ability to do what he believes is right, and the fact he was even able to care for someone like her, who had previously help such hostile feelings towards him. His ability to forgive and love. That’s what she fell in love with. And she’s not wrong to, those are all qualities he possesses. She didn’t ignore his flaws, she was pointing out his good qualities that he was ignoring. To overcome your flaws and self hatred, you also need to know your good qualities, I know this from experience. And if he couldn’t forgive himself, then he would start from zero. That was telling him that if he wanted to change, then start now. Be the wonderful person and hero that Rem knows he can be. That’s not a delusion, that’s a truth. A truth even Subaru was blind to, but Rem could see. He was instrumental to bringing down the white whale and defeating Sloth, so how was what Rem saw a delusion? Yes, he’s a normal human being, but that is exactly why Rem sees him as a hero. Crusch saw this too. I also don’t know what you mean about him not truly working on his flaws. Which flaws? How should he have worked on them? Also, how do you think Rem should have handled it instead and what should she have said to him that others haven’t already done? These are genuine questions to spark a healthy, civil discussion. Learns throw ideas around. For the admonishing, that is something she couldn’t do. Everyone else already did, if she did, that would be it for him. He would leave her as he would believe he couldn’t trust her anymore and Rem doesn’t want him to abandon her, which he would. She chose a different approach from everyone else. She chose to give love instead.

Well yea Subaru is definitely torn between the two of them even though he should pick one tbh. In the LN vol 10. when Subaru was talking with his dad the conversation went like this, Kenichi was basically accusing Subaru that he was two timing because he had a girl he liked and a girl who likes him. Then Subaru said how bad he felt about it and how he was not qualified. But goes on to say "But I can't help it! So I have two number one stars, what's the big deal?!" "It was unforgivable no matter how he might frame it, but at the moment, those were Subaru's honest feelings. He loved Emilia. He loved Rem". also in the LN vol 12. when he is talking with beako, she said to Subaru to make her his number one, but she goes on to say how it was impossible for him to do so because his number one had been long decided. And then just after Beatrice said that, Subaru thinks to himself on how "Emilia was inside him. Rem was inside him. Both were inside him. Betty's words were clear. When he thought of both of them, Subaru's heart leaped and grew hot. This was the answer carved upon his soul". theres also the time when Subaru confessed after the white whale when rem was faking her death going on to say how he can't live without her, and how he wont give her to anyone, etc. there are many other conversations that solidify this as well in the LN. Final thoughts: In my opinion i don't really care who Subaru ends up with as ships shouldn't be the main focus of the series but it's still there and Subaru needs to choose one or he will end up with none (that rimed lol), but yea i wonder how this love triangle will end up as both Rem and Emilia still have a good chance to end up as Subaru's end game (minus satella ofc as rem and Emilia don't even know she's competing lol). so what do you think will happen? would love to hear any opinion on this, like the content btw, your voice is very soothing lol.

@Mally Theres some lines that Capella stated that seem off to me, like the one where she stated that she knows a side of me that i can't show to others.which if you read back in arc 4 refers to his feelings for rem as Subaru states his weakness is a side of him he can't show to others which only rem can see. What i get from the capella scene is that her authority it's kinda trying to pick up Rem as well but can't since she's wiped from existence. Theres some other capella lines that also seem off to me but this was one of them. so i don't really take this as fact since even up to arc 6/7 the love triangle is still on going and this took place in arc 5.

Emilia is the person Subaru strives for and wants to be the best version of himself for. Rem is just that go to girl when he feels like he isn't good enough for her. If you havn't noticed but Subaru would literally do this for anyone including someone like Shaula he was planning on killing himself at ending arc 6 if she cried out to him about not wanting to die and he would of done everything in his power to save her and he doesn't have romantic feelings for this girl it's just that Subaru has always failed at being a hero to rem. His hero mentality is the sole reason for his self loathing. However Subaru still believes he would eventually meet Shaula again in the future which is reason he didn't go with it when she didn't cry out.

One issue with the Emilia aspect of this theory is that Tappei has said many times that Rem, like Otto, was not planned to be this significant in the series, while whatever connection is revealed between Emilia and the Witch of Envy was clearly planned from the beginning.

Sure, that is true, but when he did decide to make Rem and Otto important characters, he must have had to rework things a lot anyway. Perhaps *something* was always going to cause Emilia to become jealous, and when he decided to make Rem a bigger part of the story and was working on ways to do that, it could have become apparent that she could be a good way to do that, hence making Subaru have more than platonic feelings for Rem in the first place (presumably, in the version where Rem wasn't important, Subaru's rejection of her as a love interest would have persisted). Apparently he quite often changes things when he thinks of something better (which is the reason for some changes from the web novel to the light novel, though these would presumably be smaller than changes from when he first came up with the story to what will actually end up being written in the final arcs), so things he planned in the beginning like Emilia's connection to the witch of Envy could easily evolve in how they are executed.

You mentioned Rem finding her own pride. This kind of bolsters a weird crackpot theory I've had that maybe she will end up with Cecilus. I don't know much about him, only that he is very prideful and a Bishonen type. My circumstantial evidence is that Subaru freaked out when he thought Julius was moving in on Emilia, got kind of jealous when Otto picked up Rem, and was told it was kind of weird to do so when he'd already said Emilia was his girl. It's just a hunch.

Frankly though, from a meta perspective, their are very few ways to sink a ship as popular as Subaru and Rem. And Tappei needs to sink this ship, as he obviously is in love with Emilia, and so probably wants her to end up with Subaru. The most obvious way would have been to kill her, but I think that ship (haha) has sailed. He could just have her never regain her memories, but that feels a bit cheap. Another option is to render her so unlikable that the Fandom will hate her and want her to suffer by not ending up with Subaru. I read a theory that Rem will turn Subaru over to the witch cult, and if that happens it could indicate Taipei is going down that route. However that would probably cause a shit storm, and given that just about everyone forgave Rem for torturing Subaru to death, I don't think it would work. So that leaves the final option, pair her with someone else, and make that pairing convincing enough that people will get over Subaru X Rem. For a time I thought it would be Otto, but then I read somewhere that Tappei said he would not get a girlfriend during the course of the plot. Another layer on which Cecilus works is, that he prays on Subaru's insecurity. Usually when a secondary girl gets paired off it's with a nice guy who is obviously less cool than the MC. Rem going with Cecilus would subvert that, and play into Subaru, and the audiences, insecurities.

Yeah, I can really see that working, and of the characters subaru would currently be insecure about (Reinhard, Julius, maybe Roswaal), none of them really seem like there'd be a reason they'd be all that likely to get together with Rem. I never saw that Otto wouldn't get a girlfriend - that is sad. well, unless he will revealed to be gay and get a boyfriend, but it has seemed that he likes girls and does not like the idea of being paired with Subaru mainly because he's a man from a lot of his banter, so it would be a bit unexpected for that to be the case. i would like to see Otto get some love. I don't think dates are a foreign concept, tbh, I think it's just that Emilia doesn't know anything about anything when Subaru tells her about them (like she also thinks you get pregnant from kissing and doesn't know what a virgin is when Regulus asks her if she is one). Perhaps the term isn't used there but they are bound to have some concept of potential couples spending time together, as even in arranged marriages and stuff that is a thing. They certainly have similar concepts of engagement and marriage at least among the nobles as you'd expect in a medieval inspired fantasy setting, and of confessing one's interest in someone else, so I think it would be odd if there wasn't such a concept, but yeah, I guess it could be some technicality that he can say 'Otto doesn't get a girlfriend... but he gets a fiancee/wife', just to sort of throw people off.

Well, he did reject her. She even mentions it herself afterwards. Yes, I don't think he said 'I love Emilia' just to do that, but to also be clear about what it was he was going to be do (saving Emilia), and that that was what Rem was signing up to help him with if she wanted to support him, but he definitely wasn't encouraging Rem to think he returned her feelings, because at that point, he didn't, or didn't realize he did.

@Mally Just re-read that part, and you’re right. However, the him not being right in the head was in regards to freaking out about her injuries. It doesn’t mention anything about a kiss and his feelings about it except his eyes being drawn to her lips before being interrupted by Ferris. If Subaru thought straight he would have known she was fine when Ferris didn’t go to her immediately. I can understand why he freaked out and didn’t think straight since she had died many times before. On betraying his love for Emilia, yeah, that’s also true, he would be if he did anything. The more I read these parts, I start noticing his body language and word choice. He’s definitely struggling with his feelings of basically falling in love with two girls, and that he can really only choose one. He doesn’t want to betray his love for Emilia since if he return’s Rem’s feelings that would prove his feelings for Emilia weren’t genuine. He didn’t want even the possibility of that being true which is why he keeps saying he loves Emilia, to reaffirm his feelings, to make sure they don’t change, but they aren’t his only feelings, he’s also developed strong feelings for Rem. Before that scene those were feelings he was trying to deny, he’s still struggling. As he doesn’t want to betray his feelings for Emilia, he also doesn’t want to hurt Rem. He tells her he loves Emilia, he hates saying it to her, but he has to, not to make her get the hint, but to reaffirm his own feelings. He’s accepted Rem’s love for him, and won’t try to change it, even if he can’t return those feelings. Unfortunately, with Rem being in a coma he can’t truly sort out these feelings. We will have to see what happens in the future and if Rem ever gets her memories back. Anyway, this is all very deep to think about, thanks. Tappei, you’re a genius if you’re a genius if you’re able to make me think this deeply on a love triangle of all things. As for my own personal opinions on the whole thing, I have always preferred it where love develops over time. Which is why the Subaru Emilia ship doesn’t captivate me too much at the moment. I’ve read some nice, cute stories, but not much that has me invested much, but I accept anything that happens, it’s not a ship I dislike, my only wish is for them all to be happy, and honestly shipping wars and waifu wars are stupid. They all have their merits.

Arc 7, Is going to be interesting cuz now the roles have been switched. =^= perhaps we'll see Emilia's POV. And the romance situation will be fleshed out more. Also, We have a couple of arcs to go especially the arcs that will be touching more on the Romance/Lust side.

He's not torn between them at all though. He loves both sure, but he's IN love with Emilia and the newer arcs make it obvious that Rem stands no chance of being in a relationship with Subaru. There's a reason why she's #2 in his heart and its not because he "loves them both equally". If that were the case, then there wouldn't be a preceding order to his affection for them both, with Emilia taking his #1 slot in his heart and ofc Rem taking the #2 slot.

Yeah, you're right, I based the title on a bit from arc 5 where he literally says 'I'm kinda torn between two girls at the moment' in a fairly funny exchange, which was just fresh in my mind because it was in a bit that was covered in one of the Re:Zero podcasts I was a guest on on SeaTactics' channel recently, but he does generally number Emilia 1 and Rem 2. Subaru preferring Emilia to some extent doesn't really affect the points made in the video though.

I don't know why is it wrong to love two people.....it is not like only loving a single person is pure love. Parents love their childrens.....they don't prefer one over the other just becoz they are born first or later....there are people who stay with the people they love and take care of them even when they dont even look like a human being(i mean about people with diseases or injuries)....Pure love means you love the person....accepting who they are....You don't judge them for their actions ...good or bad...or what they give to you or not....you love them unconditionally.. That is why nowadays pure love is rare. Rem is obssesive but still it is unconditional ......Subaru has the same....Emilia doesnt know how she feels...but is still the same. And you can love more than one people that way. But also that doesnt mean you can go have a harem.

I mean after seeing Arc 5 and Reading Arc 6 I don't think it's going to happened. I mean one of Emilia major developments is her realizing her love for Subaru. Her accepting polygamy after Arc 5 and 6 gives us small hints on her perspective on the idea. Is just going to leave us with...what? And I don't think it's going to happen especially what happened with Rem at the end.

Even if a lot of people as of now call Emilia the best and trash on Rem, does that make me hate her? No. If people trash on Emilia, does that make me dislike her? I actually think that's highly possible as well, but since Rem and Emilia don't know Satella is a rival to them at the moment, I left that option out of this discussion, since I think anything like that will come very late in the story where we have already found out whatever the deal was with Emilia and Satella in the first place, and so doesn't really impact what the love triangle situation might be trying to achieve with Subaru, Rem and Emilia's character arcs before the end game stuff.

Not really. I mean most people would be jealous if the person they loved also loved someone else, and that wouldn't make most people like the witch of envy, who lost her mind and destroyed half the world. It's just that it's likely Emilia will have to face the similarities between herself and Satella, and the witch, at some point in the story.

Hm, ok after rereading beginning of act 6, she does posses some sort of jealousy but thankfully it isn't a negative one like in woe but a positive, self motivational one. So she is different then Satella/woe. More and more hints that Emilia perhaps is just good side of Satella while her bad side was sealed away. Splinting soul perhaps...? Also you are right with her being forced to face the similarities since she seems to outright reject the idea. Am I Satella or am I Emilia type of chapter is inevitable. Also its difficult to discuss this without spoilers, sorry for any that slipped.
