Not-Nat wouldn't have the connection to Clint that makes her so determined to find him at the start of Endgame. There's a lot you could fake, but this would go beyond it. Additionally, I don't know that the soul stone would accept Clint's sacrifice if it wasn't the real Nat

This theory has been going round for months, ever since the trailer that showed the face incision. Don't get me wrong, they are good at crafting theories, but this is not one that originated with them. Pretty sure I first saw it on an episode of New Rockstars Rogue Theory around the Superbowl.

I can't really say I'd enjoy if this theory played out in the movies. It would just feel like a major cop-out and would kinda undermine Natasha's character arc. I thought her conclusion in endgame was pretty good and solidified who she was. If we find out it was Yelena in Infinity War and Endgame, not only would we lose a new and potentially interesting character to follow for the next few phases, but it would also undermine Nats character. Instead of a beloved hero we've been following for around a decade dying as a grand sacrifice, it'd be character we hardly know about which kinda takes away from the importance of that moment. And slight correction, when she said "I used to have nothing, then I got this family", she was referring to when she used to be in the red room and then hawkeye had her join shield/became friends with the avengers. She wasn't referring to anything post Infinity War. Part of the reason she was upset in that scene was because she had lost a good chunk of that family. Another being, she likely did know who her father was, just not his name. The scene was "Why, because he knows you daddy's name?" "I didn't." So yeah, I just can't see this theory playing out that well. I think I'd like it more if (the real) Yelena became Fury's new recruit/the new black widow, assuming she survives her debut movie. It wouldn't be wise to waste Florence Pugh's talent.

If the Natasha we saw in Endgame was actually not Natasha at all - that cheapens Endgame for me. Natasha's arc in Endgame is poignant because she is someone who has been searching for salvation for a long time because of all the "red in her ledger" (Avengers 2012). We have seen that Clint meant a lot to her because he has helped her on this quest of wiping out the red. That's why in Endgame, when Clint goes on his downward spiral and racks up his own red ledger, she wants to help him the same way he helped her. And when it came time to sacrifice a life to get the soul stone, she knew it had to be her for (a) selfish reasons - this is the path to ultimate salvation and (b) selfless reasons - Clint's family needs him more than anyone else in the world needs her. If this is not Natasha, why is she so torn up about Clint's downward spiral? Why is she so committed to helping him? We know nothing about this character...is she also seeking salvation? Her reason to sacrifice now would be that Clint's sacrifice wouldn't work, takes away all the depth from their relationship.

But the Soul Stone requires an everlasting trade where someone loses "that which they love". So does that mean that Clint loves Yelena? You would think that the Soul Stone could tell that it isn't Natasha. Or, is the Soul Stone reading Clint's soul, in which case he doesn't know that it's Yelena, so he thinks that he really is losing Natasha forever? Also, it would then make sense that it would need to be Netasha/Yelena that would die because she doesn't love Clint, so she wouldn't have gotten the Soul Stone!

I came here to say this. I don't think you can trick the soul stone. Clint loves Natasha. If Natasha never actually died, then he didn't lose something he loved, whether he knew it or not. He hasn't seen her since Civil War so how could he love the new Nat? There wouldn't have really been time, in my opinion. Unless I'm missing something. I think this theory is interesting but I just don't know how I feel about this if it is actually the case. A face swap also feels like somewhat of a cop out to me.

MY THEORY: secret invasion. in the black widow movie we will find out that natasha was replaced by a skrull. therefore hawkeye didn’t know it wasnt really her, therefore the sacrifice is still valid, and therefore: the real nat is alive.

That actually makes sense too. The only thing is that Ik they brought the skrulls which allows for a lot of plot changes but I don’t think they will want to overuse it cuz then a lot of moments won’t be as meaningful anymore if we think they can be “undone” Also if this theory is correct then that means that nat will come back (why would she be alive but not actively doing stuff). But I’m pretty sure Scarlett Johansson isn’t coming back to play nat after the black widow movie.

A skrull reverts to its natural form when it dies. That was the original reveal in the Secret Invasion comics: Elektra was the first skrull-replaced hero to be revealed because she died and her body reverted.

I could see how most of this theory would fit. The only problem is that in order to get the soul stone one person has to sacrifice one they love. Even if Natasha and Yelena did switch identities and Yelena sacrificed herself it wouldn't really work because Clint didn't know Yelena. He didn't love her. He knew and cared about Natasha

Not going to lie, I wasn’t feeling this particular theory until the Fury plot point in the last few minutes. I also think it solves the issue of “Natashas” sacrifice not having meaning if she IS still alive. Because if we’re going to believe what Natasha 2.0 says to Captain about how she was able to find the family she never had, it makes perfect sense that Yelena would be willing to die for the Avengers. She recognized that although she loved her family (the Avengers) deeply, they would eventually reconnect with the real Natasha and their heartbreak wouldn’t be forever. So, she sacrifices herself because she loved them but ultimately knew they were never hers to love. I won’t be too upset if this is canon except for the fact that Im always hesitant of new actors joining the MCU (especially when they’re playing the same character as a previous actor before them). However, Florence Pugh has proven herself versatile and I have confidence in her. Doesn’t remove the bittersweet reality that we won’t see ScarJo as Black Widow anymore.

My theory for her still being alive has always been that when Steve went back to put the stones back where they belonged he arrived right before Natasha and Clint started fighting, handed the stone to Clint while explaining what happened, and then Clint went back and pretended she sacrificed herself. From there she had enough "juice" in her suit to make one trip so they picked a time and place for her to go or Steve left that up to her.

The theory involved with the hair color is backwards. If Nat is a natural redhead and Yelena is naturally blonde, the roots would be blonde if it was Yelena. I'm more likely to believe that the Nat who died was actually a Skrull than this whole "Face-Off" plan. I think Nat is actually dead and the Black Widow movie is just to set up Yelena as a newer Black Widow.

I think that when they swapped faces they also changed the pigmentation of their hair, which is actually possible, and so the new pigmentation of her hair comes back out showing that she is maybe accepting that this is who she is now

The post-credits scene of Black Widow basically confirms that this theory is wrong. (Yelena goes to Nat’s grave, but is interrupted by Valentina and tricked into thinking that Clint killed her. Valentina also confirms that Nat is dead.)

Disagree. Pretty sure it's because you can't sacrifice something to get the soul stone and then will that very same thing back into existence. Then there really is no sacrifice. There is essentially a contract with the stone in order to get it and use it. If you use it to get your sacrifice back...narratively that doesn't really work.

Florence Pugh is probably going to be in the Young Avengers. She’s already rumored to be in Flacon and Winter Soldier. She fits with the age of all the people who have been cast. So if this I true, they’d be sticking veteran Avenger Black Widow into a young adult team wearing the face of another character? What’s the point? And this means that they threw away the final part of her character arc. There are a bunch of things here that I think are cool details and probably hold some water but for something else. It keeps it fun though. Very interesting.

If the MCU does this, it greatly cheapens her death and we lose about half the character development we get for her character. Sure, all the pieces fit but from a storytelling perspective, the sacrifices she made hold a lot less value if it's not actually the widow we know. Like sure it's still black widow but we lose so much character development it just wouldn't make sense for the writers to do this.

There's still something I don't get about this theory. In Endgame, Clint has to sacrifice someone he loves to get the soul stone. Clint loves Natasha NOT Yelena. Meaning when he sacrifices Yelena it would do nothing because, he doesn't love her. You could argue that maybe in the five years Yelena and Clint got together and fell in love, but Clint has been running around the world as Ronin killing people, and Yelena/Natasha is busy running the Avengers.

I think it might be more about the thought. I mean, you could argue Clint didn't sacrifice her at all considering he never made the choice to. Which if this theory is correct (I don't think it is, but hey) Yelena sacrificed her life as Nat and the family she had, something she loved so the stone could be retrieved. Which to me makes some degree of sense. Still don't really believe it, but the Natasha sacrifice never sat well with me.

Further plot twist; Maybe the reason "Natasha" insisted on it being her was because with Clint believing she was the same Black Widow he knew as his best friend and loved dearly, his loss and sacrifice would feel and therefore be considered legitimate, whereas because she did not actually share that history with him or had the time to build that strong of a relationship on her part, her being the one to "sacrifice" him may have come across as illegitimate thereby negating his bravery and leaving them without the soul stone and with Clint having died for nothing.
