I'm often asked about the books on my studio bookshelf, so in this relaxing video I'll share 10 of my favourites with you. I'll talk about how I use them in my art practice to inspire my work, how they give me ideas for different colour palettes, techniques and subjects to paint, and why it's a good idea to curate your own library of new and secondhand art books. A great video to use for last minute Christmas gift ideas too!

Glad you mention the subject of other artists work being copied. There is an element of adoring someone’s style and trying to figure out what it is about it that speaks to you and find your own way of expressing it. It’s so important! And in my opinion exactly that sets apart a professional artist from an amateur. The mutual respect and grace to each other as artist is the key. 😊🎄🧡

@Alyona’s Watercolour Creations You must be time traveling from a few centuries ago: That attitude is as offensive - and as dated - as racist and classist presumptions and stereotypes. Art should seek to be inclusive not superficial and divisive; If anything separates us it’s experience.

I agree. The more I dive into the matter, the more frustrated I get, since I get to know more gorgous artworks from great artists I haven't known yet and I love it so much, but once I found them I know I will never be able to paint in this style because I appreciate other artists and don't want to steal from them or just copy their work. Haven't found out yet how I can incorporate a bit of that in my own work without copying someone. And btw I don't see how things like mutual respect for each other and so on can ever be outdated.

I absolutely loved this video! Taking inspiration from other artists and making the image your own is what I've been doing. I only just started on my art journey this past year or so. Mostly I've been binging youtube videos, but Sinterklaas (our Dutch Santa) gifted me a book about drawing Dutch architecture, mostly houses found in cities. Think Amsterdam canal houses. It's a step by step guide and so much fun. Even drawing exactly the same as the instructions I still find the outcome is my own. I've never been able to copy something exactly, I'm not precise enough and I don't have the patience. Watching others, such as yourself, has inspired me to work in layers and take my time. I've learned I don't have to finish a sketch in a rush. Also learning how others work has given me permission to just be me and not strive for perfection ie realism. Being taught to colour inside the lines as a child stopped me from doing any art at all. I'm trying to teach my kids it's about the process and having fun and using all the materials to explore, not about perfection or what you think it's supposed to be. Anyway, lots of rambling. The first bird book was my favourite. I'm going on a hunt for it, as well as the owl one.

@@kreativeReise that's great! It's called 'in Holland staat een huis' huis portretjes tekenen. Written by Carla Kamphuis. It's in Dutch. It's a stylised way of drawing Dutch architecture. I don't think it's been translated, as it was published in 2021. I hope this helps.

In the past, publishers often colored the top of the book pages to protect them from dust. Nowadays, the publishers either don't do it at all because it’s too expensive or books don’t have to live long anymore or they color everything because it looks pretty. :)

Well, if you fork out a small fortune on Folio Society books then you should be able to get books with gilded tops. If you fork out a large fortune on Folio Society books you will get gilding on all three edges and all the bells and whistles that come with fancy, limited edition books. 😂

I think you feel happy about birds over a winter landscape because it is a sign of life, that everything is not dead and that life is still going on. We tend to equate winter with hibernation and lack of life, but the flock of birds just obliterates that notion. Their flight is a very visible and lofty sign that life goes on as normal; but this life is against the muted and limited palette of a winter landscape: snow with the blue-turqoise shadows, grey or cyan skies and muted browns of trees. This palette is very limited and does not have any strong or garish colours, so we find it comforting and calming and the flock bird just breathes life into that palette. That’s my thought, anyway.

Thank you for sharing some of your inspiring art books! I saw Imagine A Forest a few years ago at my local independent book store, opened it up, flipped and immediately bought it because I love the folk art and colour palettes. I haven't read it cover to cover either, but it brings me joy to open it up at a random page and just browse a bit. Now I'm thinking that I might need Our Garden Birds, even though most of those species are not found in Canada - like you, the style is beautiful AND quirky which I love. I'm looking up Angela Harding books now too, because I love print making even though I haven't done any since high school so many years ago. I'll also add that there is nothing quite like a good vintage identification book with the colour and B&W illustrations. I inherited a vintage Trees of Canada book from my parents, and being a forester with an arty leaning, it is so much more beautiful than modern tree identification books.

I have a book for you: Edith Young Color Scheme, an Irrevent History of Art and Pop Culture in Color Palettes. And your section, a must see is The Blues of David Hockney's pools...16 blues. I borrowed it from the local library and you should also. Another palette is the red of the red caps in Renaissance portraits. I laughted and enjoyed trying to translate the swatch to my own watercolor.

I think my favorite part of this video is hearing how inspired you became by the images in the books, and talking about how excited you are to try different ideas. I’m not only a complete beginner at this point, I’m a recovering perfectionist, so I’m finding that a big part of my creative journey and practice is allowing myself to really enjoy the process and become far less interested in the end result. I feel inspired by your inspiration! Thank you for sharing this video ☺️

Ooo these are some lovely books! I have the original The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse and I’ve been meaning to get the animated edition (because I’m excited to watch the short too) and it’s a gorgeous book. There’s another one in a similar style by a different author about a little dragon and a panda that’s also gorgeous. I also have a similar but smaller bird guide from the early-mid 1900’s that’s got just as many gorgeous old illustrations! I can also recommend, if you can find them, bird/nature journals by Charles Tunnicliffe; he works more realistic BUT you can see a lot in how he makes his paintings/sketches/prints! They can be a bit hard to find these days because they’re out of print but I can really recommend them! Along with books by Keith Brockie too.

Sometimes it's just a lovely way to while away a few hours just really looking/reading through them. I have ordered a copy of the "Imagine A Forest" book as that one struck a chord with me. I am so happy that you featured the book I sent you by Geninne D Zlatkis, and so happy to hear how much you love it and how much it's inspired you, I knew as soon as I saw it (as I have a copy) I had to send it to you and I'm happy it has become a source of inspiration for you. I love the characterful birds of Matt Sewell and have orrerd a copy of that book too. I can see how all of these books might inspire you and how you create your anmazing work.Have you thought about creating your own book of your artwork and how you create it, what inspires you etc.I live in Bridlington and know all the place in the David Hockney sketchbook book,he still owns a house/studio here in Bridlington and does return sometimes toi work there.(Matt) Hope you and Dominic have a realy great Christmas and a really inspiring new year.

43:09 I know exactly what you mean about seeing the birds in the sky. I used to feel that way on the top deck of a bus home on a damp winters night. Seeing the orange lights from peoples homes dispersed through the condensation on the window, a million different soap operas playing out behind their front doors, or the distant sound of a light aircraft in a clear blue summer sky. How many palettes of colour do you have? If selecting one brand to solely paint with, which would it be?

I actually don't know (I'm not in my studio right now - I've been away visiting family for 4 weeks!). The one brand would probably be Schmincke Horadam.

I have the Charlie Mackesy book and love it! I also follow him on Instagram and he is always positive and enlightening. I think, too, I'll be ordering a couple of your recommendations to add to my collection as Christmas gifts to myself. Thanks for sharing and especially your commentary!

Its the 21st century.......its called central heating. Or are you way out in the country where the is nothing. I lived in south africa and no heating most of the time houses had no fire places. The uncomfortable and tormentingness of being cold ALL THE TIME was horrible. Except of course the rest of the year was pleasant

We unfortunately can't afford to have the heating on very much. Energy bills are extremely high right now.

@@NatashaNewtonArt ok gotcha! The electricity in South africa was astronomically high. If you just thought about baking something in your oven it was...cha ching! I got a counter top confectionery oven it used almost no electricity. When I got cold I would jog on my mini trampoline lol!
