So Nate what happens when one of the Scottish/Irish lads who welcomed you to their breaks turn up at Pipe, is the welcome reciprocated?
@MrWheezyE420

That's what I fucking hate about this Hawaii attitude to their waves. You can talk about how shit localism has turned the sport for everywhere else except in Hawaii. But for some reason Pipe gets policed like this. I live at Snapper, we have our old heads here that have put in the years, but then they still let the tourists catch a wave. The water is for everyone.

Honestly, I expected this kookery from Koa, but Nate's attitude is very disappointing. These guys surf all over the world and are welcomed in every lineup, but don't feel the need to reciprocate. Typical rich boy entitled attitudes

Imagine living in a place where the whole world shows up at your doorstep, making the break more dangerous than it is. Then you have a bunch of pros who think they don’t have to respect locals and it’s frustrating for the locals. I get it. Especially since the wave is really only thirty seconds but you have to sit for a couple hours to get one.

@@bobsmith8124 I grew up there. My dad and brother still live there. I live on the outer banks in North Carolina now. I left because the crowds of tourists. There are lots of places to go that have empty spots. When it’s your home, and the people who show up have no respect for you or your home, you get a little bit protective. It’s hard to blame them. Respect is something that’s lacking in the younger generation.

Was in Hawaii a few years back and didn't even cross my mind to enter the water with a board, it's just not a friendly vibe at all. Basically if you're not Hawaiian, you're not welcome. I love my cold empty line ups 😊 and the few that do surf here are the nicest people.

Not just pipe mate, most spots that are somewhat localised work exactly the same.......but if you put your time in, take the scraps and be respectful and don't paddle around like a crazy hassler you may get called into one by the locals.

@@jaycee571 Nailed it! I have a couple local breaks in which I paddle right out to the peak, crowded or not, no matter what. I'm one of the "old guards" at a few spots. It's not about ego or anything malicious, just that I put more than enough of my time, and proven myself at those spots for many years to earn a right in the lineup. It's just a respect of establishment thing. But I don't hog waves or drop in on anyone at these spots I mentioned, I have proper lineup etiquette, I just get in rotation on the peak and get mine when it's my turn.

@@bobsmith8124 that all fine till you start trying to paddle inside me and snake waves and you’re some outsider kook and I’m a long time local at that spot. Then in that moment the ethics change. It’s just the idea of having a little respect for the locals. It shouldn’t always be some free for all either. If I paddle out a break that I’m not a local at and there’s what seems like obvious locals on the peak I’ll stay to the outside of mind my own business and just try to work my way in the lineup overtime. But I wouldn’t just go paddle right out past everybody on the peak at a break I’m not a local at. That’s not cool . Dig?

I see a lot of comments complaining about how NS locals stick to the hierarchy and don't let people and tourists catch waves in the best take off spots. Sitting here acting entitled to a wave that you don't have the skill to surf. On top of that you enter the sport without respecting its history or its purpose. Hawaiians created surfing. Hierarchy was always apart of the sport from the beginning. For those that don't know this, only those who were in the Royal Hawaiian family were even allowed to surf when Hawaii was populated with only Hawaiians. The aspect of Hierarchy is in the blood of surfing. When Hawaii was opened up to the world by the violent hands of the U.S. Government surfing became popularized by George Freeth, Alexander Hume Ford and Jack London. Their initial goal in popularizing surfing wasn't because it was "so awesome" It was because they wanted to entice white men to move to Hawaii and settle there so they could create a white owned economy. So next time you go in the water and disrespect the locals and their hierarchy just know that you disrespect the sport of surfing itself and probably should take up golf or stay home.
