This is the kind of argumalents people had against seatbelts and motorbike helmets. Next generation will all be wearing them.

I'd rather fight Jon Jones in front of the entire world before surfing jaws or any other big wave, and I've surfed for years. Eli is a savage for sure!!!

Not sure how people don’t get the localism thing. You don’t need to be a surfer to understand it. Think of your towns main basketball court. During the summer is some out of town crew going to come and say they’re up next while there are plenty of other teams waiting?

It’s a tough one. I think I’m going to wear one while bodyboarding shallow spots, but not sure I want to wear on when surfing standup at normal spots. Horses for courses perhaps?

why did koa switch from the hard helmet (simba) to the softy helmet (dmc)??
@AlexGreenberg1
@AlexGreenberg1 Күн бұрын
people say its cuz he's sponsored by them. I wanna know too. I own a DMC helmet and I've surfed pipe with it. I actually don't find it super intrusive. but I want to get a hard helmet because everyone says the hard helmets are more protective and I imagine they are. My thought (not married to this) is that the soft helmet provides enough safety to protect you from completely cracking your head open while its providing more comfortability. idk

I see a lot of comments complaining about how NS locals stick to the hierarchy and don't let people and tourists catch waves in the best take off spots. Sitting here acting entitled to a wave that you don't have the skill to surf. On top of that you enter the sport without respecting its history or its purpose. Hawaiians created surfing. Hierarchy was always apart of the sport from the beginning. For those that don't know this, only those who were in the Royal Hawaiian family were even allowed to surf when Hawaii was populated with only Hawaiians. The aspect of Hierarchy is in the blood of surfing. When Hawaii was opened up to the world by the violent hands of the U.S. Government surfing became popularized by George Freeth, Alexander Hume Ford and Jack London. Their initial goal in popularizing surfing wasn't because it was "so awesome" It was because they wanted to entice white men to move to Hawaii and settle there so they could create a white owned economy. So next time you go in the water and disrespect the locals and their hierarchy just know that you disrespect the sport of surfing itself and probably should take up golf or stay home.

Nothing but respect and admiration for Nate and Koa for their surfing but I just want to toss something out there for people watching this who are seriously considering if a helmet is right for them. I don't think the ear/balance thing is a real issue here. More just something that feels foreign or alien for nate after a lifetime of surfing with a bare head. Look at all of the sports in the world with world class athletes competing at the pinnacle of their sport that need to wear a helmet and can still maintain coordination. Bike sports are a prime example. Go watch Redbull Rampage and tell me if those guys are thrown off by wearing a fullface helmet which covers their ears or if Motocross athletes suffer the same hinderance. So many examples of sports that require helmets with ear coverings with world class athletes. Also, as someone who lives in a place where using a 5/4 hooded is fairly necessary year round, I've never heard of a single person complain about lack of balance. Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and comfort/adoption of various gear but I wouldnt want this video to dissuade someone from using a helmet for those reasons which are questionable.

Some good points but also funny because when you live somewhere with cold water you have to get used to wearing a hood and if you surf for a long time you have to get used to wearing ear plugs. Never wore a helmet but would think you'd get used to it too

I had the same reaction as Koa seeing a great white when I saw a bear while hiking. It took my mind a second to realize it was a bear. My eyes and my mind were not in sync for a few seconds, I thought it was a dog at first because it was this harry thing galloping.

Respect is earned, never given. No matter what someone’s address may be. I’m a 3 minute walk from my break and I never thought I had more rights to a wave then the weekenders. The entitlement is strong with these two.
