Up until the late 1900s, the locals of Teahupo’o watched this monster form outside their homes when swell rolled in each year - but no one thought of attempting to surf it. Then, in 1985, Tahitian Thierry Vernaudon and a few other locals began the 15-minute paddle out and surfed Teahupo’o for the very first time.
