So wait.... we all got this for FREE??! 😄 I cannot believe the amount of valuable info in this interview. This could have easily been a pricy seminar for all the ground covered here...Bethany had great info and Nate your questions and comments were perfect! I'm a "trainer-in-training" reading tons, watching tons and doing tiny pro-bono work on things were i can "first do no harm" so, being super conservative (small dogs, small problems 😁:) I will be going back thru this vid a bunch to outline all I got out of it! Almost skipped it since it's for competition stuff but man, glad I didn't because either learned new things or had my ideas confirmed. So exciting!!! Nate, will you pls tell Bethany that this viewer is very grateful to her for sharing her insights?! You as well so thank you!!

Bethany...... YES, PLEASE!!!!!! PLEASE start up your own KZbin channel....!!!!! Im just loving your advice & tips that you guys talk about on your videos together..... i would most definitely love to hear & learn more from you!!!!! Thank you greatly for being a guest on here!!!! Looking forward & want to hear more from you.... in fact, if i was closer to California ( im in Colorado ), I'd love to meet you, & I'd be more than willing to volunteer / intern with you at your place to learn more from you on how to train & help my almost 4 year old Labraweenie dog.... but unfortunately, i live too far away to do so, & financially not able to make a trip with my dog to do so, but if i could, I MOST CERTAINLY WOULD!!! So much so, it has definitely become a bucket list item for me to do so.... the advice & tips you have given resonate with me very much so on learning better how to help teach my Love of my Life (ive had her since she was 8 weeks old, & she literally is my everything)... Thank you sooooo much Nate for having Bethany on your show!!!! You guys are awesome... keep up the great work!!!!

Thanks Nate!!! Another great podcast with Bethany. Love watching the beginning with her working dogs. She should absolutely start her own channel. :) You both have a great style of explaining things. Where can we find the video of Bethany saying her commands? I loved the French commands when I saw Michael Ellis training his dog. I wish I had started with French. Now that he knows his commands I'm going to teach him another set of commands in French.

Lol i had a black German shephard who was not food motivated in any way. He had a very high prey drive and loved his toy more then food. He'd try to chase cars in the back of my suv. My new german shepard is very food motivated. He's on a raw diet but he'll eat no matter what. Lol i just hired a trainer because he's scared of other dogs. I showed him what I've been doing .. from watching your videos and he said no don't wait to give the treat. My dog knows sit, down, shake, stay when the front door is open. Stay for 30sec. Granted he doesn't know these things quite yet with distractions. He knows sit and down with distractions but nothing else. I'm working on heel. That is the biggest struggle.

I wish I'd been aware of all the "possibilities" when I got my well bred, working line GSD puppy (it was a once in a lifetime lucky chance, I wasn't prepared and had to learn everything"on the fly" as a first time owner). I love how you said you made mistakes with your first "training knucklehead", he wasn't perfect, but you loved him to death. That's kind of where I'm at with my nearly 3 year old. "Pet Obedience" is very good, recall is 100% reliable & proofed in surprise high prey drive distractions (which he REALLY WANTS TO "GET")...I see & hear these videos that focus on puppies, and get a little bummed out because he could have been "a lot more"---but main priority now is having fun, and I can still teach him new things for fun, even if "competition" is out if reach. I'm more interested in giving my devoted buddy a good, satisfying healthy life for himself than trying to satisfy my own ego with trophies. Thanks for all you do, Nate--Bethany is AWESOME!! I think you BOTH are amazing!!

I just started listening to Nate's podcasts--when I saw Bethany's Nate Shoemer podcast # 1 then podcast #9, I got SO EXCITED THINKING YOU HAD 9 FULL PODCASTS WITH BETHANY, lol!! Because I could listen you to your two every single day, haha. But I'm now going back and listening to your other podcasts with other people---OMG---they are ALL WONDERFUL. Thank you, Nate! Terrible random question--is there anyone wonderful you know in the DC/Northern Virginia area? I did email the local PSA guy based on one of the Brittany videos) there's no IPO or other sports clubs within an hour of DC/Northern Virginia. I almost wonder if California is RIDICULOUSLY RICH with FANTASTIC TRAINERS (including YOU, of course!!!). Lastly: thank you for your service to your country. Once I saw the video with your Marine Corps friend, it all made sense. My father was a career Air Force Officer & fighter pilot. I started my nursing career as a Reservist with the 2290th out of the old Walter Reed Military Hospital Center off Georgia Ave in DC. I know so many exceptionally intelligent, kind, compassionate Service Members, but somehow I was surprised at hearing of your Marine experience. I am sure the dedication, selfless service, and consistent discipline is a great part of what has helped you an absolutely OUTSTANDING trainer handler. Thank you so much, you are very exceptional & special!🇺🇸💙🌟❤🇺🇸

Nate Schoemer my son and I share the same KZbin acc and I can see that he’s pretty excited to start putting your awesome training videos to good use. We lost our old shepherd just recently. Very smart boy, but had his behavioural issues. I’m extremely happy that Lync is watching your training sessions, equipping himself with the knowledge before we start again. Knowledge is power and as long as we’re all using your techniques correctly and as you say “Make it fun” then it can only be onwards and upwards for Lync and his pup. Thank you Nate, you’re a breath of fresh air 👍

You were so funny here Nate about the verbal marker 🤣 😂 🥰 I notice that I will say "yes!" slightly (??) differently each time (same with "good") but not SUPER differently. Should I assume my dog gets it? Also, Bethany's "ftht" sound is a great idea but doesn't the marker need to be something the dog can hear from a distance? 🤔🤔 TIA!

Wow! This was really fascinating! I have so many questions now, I wish I had written them down during the talk. From the top of my head, here are the one's I'm remembering now: -When we started training, I didn't know about the more alert vs casual sits and downs. I've made the shaping box to fix this now, but how do we transition from the box to outside the box? Not reward for sits and downs that are sloppy and move on? Or correct sloppy sits and down? -Figuring out value things- Loki is not particularly food or toy motivated. He's happy to train-- unless there is a butterfly, lizard, interesting shadow, etc-- then that has greater value than anything I can offer. (We live in AZ and there are A LOT of lizards...) I understand that we're trying to make the value we're offering the highest value treat--- but how do I compete with lizards that run away, can be caught, and then rolled in 🤢. On walks we're using the e collar and prong collar, and it's working okayish for corrections (sometimes I've got it pretty far up and the lizard still wins)-- but how do I use that sort of motivation as a reward. Pretending a toy is a lizard is not fooling him. -Protection training seems like more liability than it's worth... I like the idea of just teaching the bark, but Loki's bark is very "hello, I'm so happy to see you" sounding. Is there a way to teach a growl on command instead? And/or teaching aggressive posturing, without any bitework? I loved hearing about Bethany's approach to training- using different languages for formal vs informal commands, substitutions like "couchez" instead of leave it. I found myself laughing at a lot of her analogies as well! We're still trying to figure out what Loki's preferred "sport" is. I'm ambivalent about French Ring because of the biting... He's decent at the scent detection now, but not necessarily raring to go (he flops down when he finds the scent like, fine, fine, here it is). So far it seems like his favorite things are riding in the car, other dogs, and chasing lizards... What kind of sport does that amount to?? ha! Thanks for another great episode! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the protection series, even if we decide not to teach them!
@chloekiser6468
@chloekiser6468 3 жыл бұрын
update: I watched half of this last night and just finished the second half today. So, Bethany said if she has a pretty ambivalent, independent dog, then she wants it "skinny and hungry"... I skipped Loki's breakfast and lunch training today, and trained and fed him only at dinnertime-- we had a lot of success with engagement and enthusiasm for training. I know you'd said you fast your dogs 1 day a week... I'm into this "hungry dog" tactic, but also a little unsure about it morally? How often is too often to fast the dog for training? Is a 1x a day feeding/training session ok for the dogs health? We'd been doing shorter sessions 3x a day, but then he was never consistently motivated.

Thanks for this! A question: If a raw diet is the best thing you can give to your dog, how then do you use food as a motivational tool in training? Perhaps a video on the topic would be of value. Thanks.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Great question and this is why I use mealtime as training time. Meaning, I make the dog/puppy work for every bite. When they work for it, it increases the value of the food. With a puppy, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed. However, I do continue to train the dog for the entire life of the dog. It’s just as important and playing and bonding. If you can't get the dog to work for food, then your next option is leash pressure training. I hope that helps and thank you for supporting my work, I really appreciate it. If my training videos have been helpful in any way, consider becoming a patron to help support my channel.
