I loved Dusty's comment about how school should be turning kids into productive humans instead of just preparing them for college. Obviously kids still need their education, but there should also be more focus on teaching them basic life skills. There's a lot more to the real world than just having a college degree.

If anyone has ever wondered, "Is there a female version of Dusty somewhere?" I have an answer for you - yes there is, her name is Amber. I've been happily married to her for 9 years. Seconds before Dusty says, "Enneagrams are demonic" Amber kindly informs me that "Enneagrams are demonic". This is not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. You're one of the few podcasts we never miss. Thanks, and keep it up.

2:02:25 The Batesville “dismount” was much better than Aaronland’s but could still use some work. I reviewed Nate’s “dismounts” from previous episodes and would like to present “The Art of the Nateland Dismount”. It can be accomplished in three easy steps: 1️⃣ Transition to the Dismount - this can be accomplished by saying phrases like “Alright!”, “We did it!”, “Boom”, or “That’s probably a good place to stop“. This gently let’s the Folks know that the show has unfortunately come to an end. 2️⃣ Express Love - a simple “We love you” will do, but occasionally sprinkle in “This is not lost on us.” 3️⃣ The Sign-off - Ensure the folks that “We’ll see you next week!” followed by a simple “Bye”. Alright, that’s probably a good place to stop. Boom. We love you guys. Thanks for all you do. It’s not lost on us Folks. See you next week. Bye.👋

Dusty was still correct. The comment about the earth spinning slow because it so so big is irrelevant to the humans on the exterior or the planet moving at 1,000 mph. It has nothing to do with relativity and everything to do with momentum. If you take a ferris wheel and make it a mile wide and put people on the outside, and then have the ferris wheel rotate one time in a minute, the people on the outside are going to be hanging on for dear life.

You HAVE to SWEETEN tea while it is STILL HOT. If you add sugar packets to unsweetened iced tea, it will hardly mix and will clump up at the bottom. I hate when restaurants try to pass off unsweetened tea and a sugar packet as sweet tea. If you’re in the south, make all the tea sweet and the people who need it unsweet have to suffer or go back north.

I almost always listen when I'm in the car and can't get to a place where I can comment. But needed to jump on here and say that I've never related more to Dusty than when he had trouble transitioning from Ad-read voice to comment-reading voice. The night before this released, when I was reading to my kids, I read a rhyming book followed by a storybook. I could not get the rhyming rhythm and cadence out my head to read the storybook properly. My kids had no idea what was going on or why all of a sudden dad forgot how to read. Keep up the great work, love the show!

From kindergarten to 12th grade I went to 14 different schools in 2 countries and 3 states. My father was a career Army Master Sergeant so we moved a lot. I attended middle school in West Germany (pre unification) and it was vastly different than school in the US. We had recess in the winter and routinely would ski or sled on the hills behind the school. I remember a field trip to East Berlin and can vividly remember how there was a lack of color. I mean of course there was color (East Berlin was not filmed in black and white) what I mean is all of the buildings were grey tones, no flowers, all of the cars were black and people wore drab dark colors. It was weird. Our German chaperone advised us not to talk to anyone and stay with the group.

Wow! I am surprised they even allowed your school classes to visit them in East Germany! Can't imagine the communists would want any of the East German children to start to see how good the non-communists had it. Or maybe it was so close to reunification they didn't care anymore? (The East Germans)

One of the worst things that ever happened to me at school was when my mom made me dress up as Ponce De Leon for some Florida history parade. Nothing more embarrassing than wearing tights as a young boy and parading through kids at their meanest stage in life. The good news is, when I was changing in the bathroom stall, which didn’t have locks back than, I tripped and fell into the main part of the bathroom half dressed in front of everyone in there. So I had that going for me…which is nice.

I also have the same recurring dream as Aaron about going to a college class and it's the day of finals and you've never been to that class before. It's so real and vivid to me that I have on more than one occasion woken my husband up in the middle of the night to ask him if I graduated college. He has that exhausted and annoyed "YES" locked and loaded under his C-PAP mask at this point in our marriage. Also my current career has nothing to do with my degree.

Aaron, although your point about the band “Eagles” not having a “the” in front of it may be true, you would still say “I am going to the Eagles concert”, just like you would say “I am going to the Blink-182 concert” and not “I’m going to Blink-182 concert.” The “the” helps describe who you’re going to go see at the concert. Love this podcast!

Hey Guys, I absolutely loved this episode. It was so nostalgic and made me happy. I immediately knew I wanted to comment but there were so many things- I literally wanted to interject in during the whole episode, so buckle up: I am from a small town (population 500) in northwest North Dakota. I attended a K-12 school and graduated with 7 of my original 11 classmates (final graduating class of 18 kids - due to neighboring towns closing their schools). Two days before this episode's release, I was back home and had the opportunity to give my daughters a tour of my school and share fond memories. The school has been renovated, but much of it remains the same, which was nice to see that not everything had been transformed. I have to admit I got a bit emotional walking though after all these years. First day of school - I vividly remember waking up at 2am and putting on my first day of school outfit and going back to bed because I was so afraid of oversleeping (I live across the street from the school 😂). My "perfect" outfit for the day? A plaid long-sleeve button down with teal corduroy pants. Again, I am from ND. We started school the middle of August. It was still 85 degrees and we had no air conditioning. Long sleeves and corduroy. As a parent, I respect my mom for letting me walk out that door... it was one of my first natural consequences lessons. When Dusty mentioned Trapper Keepers, I immediately remembered mine with its trio of hot air balloons on the cover. I treasured that thing. I'd love to say it kept me organized or taught me organizational skills, but alas.... I absolutely loved the smell of the ink of erasable pens - which we were finally allowed to use in 6th grade, we felt like we had arrived and were a little naughty using pens in math. My history teacher hand wrote all of his notes long-hand on the board. When he still had a chalkboard, billows of chalk dust would emerge from his classroom at the end of each period. Then he got a white board. After that, students then stumbled out in a haze of fumes. My Norwegian grandmother and all 3 of my mom's siblings say waRsh instead of wash (my mom doesn't). Drove me crazy because I felt (and still feel - towards my aunt & uncles) that it sounds uneducated. And we are from the WAY North.

Just finished the “Names” episode and thought I could leave a comment here. When I was born, my mom and dad both forgot how to spell “Michael” and were too embarrassed to ask someone how to spell it. So they spelled it M-I-C-H-E-A-L instead of A-E-L which is the correct way. Breakfast also included my comment in “The Dakotas” episode and had my name as “Aaron Friese” instead of “Micheal Friese.” Thanks to Breakfast, I am now going through an identity crisis in my life. Listening to the program on August 9th, enjoying the zoo talk and the analogy that kept being brought up about prison/jail. It was said that we don’t treat jail/prison like zoos. Well, in Southern Indiana, in the 80s we sure did. When I was in 6th grade, one of our field trips was to tour the county lockup. The school was trying to show us what happens if we mess up and to kind of scare us straight, not that we were a rough group or anything. I recall little, but what I remember is meeting the sheriff, then we took a tour led by jailers. I recall the cprisoners were in cells behind doors with rectangular windows in them, like a classroom door. There were prisoners crowded around the window, motioning for us to open the door. Which of course we just laughed and pointed at them like “ha ha ha, you’re in there, and we’re out here”. We then all piled into the “yard”, having a seat on the concrete. We heard two of the prisoners give talks about why they were in jail, the length of their sentence, and to stay away from drugs. While they were talking, everyone was whispering about how both guys were uncles to one of my friends. It mortified him. Of course, I felt bad for my friend but still couldn’t help but laugh about the whole situation. Love the podcast and everything you guys are doing! I am a 4thgrade teacher now and full-time preacher, so I appreciate the hilarious, clean material all of you provide for my family and I to listen to. Thank you!

Hello Folks! and Hey Bear! Clearing up Aaron's doubts about "warsh." My mom grew up all over Texas and still says "warsh" to this day. It is "warshcloth", "warshing machine" and "Warshington DC". The last one got me noticed my senior year in highschool. I said something about "Warshington DC" and my friends stopped me and asked me to spelling then say it. It took a few times before I caught on. It was was genuinely hard to pronounce the "ah" sound in "wash" without concentration for years after. Also regarding the band, "the" Eagles. My mom doesn't ever go to "the ER" she only goes "to ER". Love Nateland and all of each your work. Keep having a good time!

When my son was younger, he went to a year-round school here in North Carolina. The students would attend 9 weeks of class, then have a 3-week break. There would be a 6-week break starting at the end of May, and when the kids returned from that, they'd begin a new school year/grade. This had the new school year starting in July. By the time traditional school started in late August, the year-rounders were almost halfway to their first break. I switch him to traditional school in 4th grade, then homeschooling him from 6th grade until he graduated -early- at 16 years old (his current age). He was able to move at his own pace, and we designed his curriculum for him. He's taking a year off to work part time and decide what he wants to do next - military, work, college...

On the road doing his gigs, trying to miss his family like a good husband and father yet the moment he gets home the crying and general chaos of having an infant and defiant almost 3yr old reluctant to potty train makes him quickly realize those days of being able to just wonder off and organize some rocks and sticks in the backyard by himself whilst hitting his "cbd pen" are over. Long-time listener, and long-time caller. I love you guys and look forward to every Wednesday. I find it peculiar that Dusty tried to dismantle the legitimacy of the telescope by referencing a KZbin video. So Dusty used his eyes to disprove someone else using their eyes. I think a lot of people would be quicker to trust the business end of a telescope, than a random KZbin video.

Hey, I'm Nateland famous now! They read my comment. To clarify, in the example that was brought up with an ant and a human walking...while we are the ant in the scenario, the human is the earth and not walking (spinning) "fast" as Brian was trying to communicate. The only flaw in the example is that the ant would be crawling on the human while they were walking, and the ant wouldn't notice how "fast" the person was walking.

My brother and I went to a K-12 public school in a small town about an hour and a half away from Nashville. There was a teacher that believed in and would talk about Bigfoot in class. The high school football team had a 61 game losing streak, but they did eventually go to the playoffs in 2014. They were finally having a good time.

Dusty and Notre Dame both pronouncing Sherwin Williams as “Sherman Williams” is absolutely mind boggling. I cheffed up paint orders at Sherwin for close to 2 years and heard approximately 647 old women call it Sherman Millings. Love y’all. P.S. Nate, next time you’re in Iowa let’s swing the sticks.

Love this episode about school. I got suspended the final day of 7th grade and the first 9days of 8th grade all over a photo. I was in science class and had a disposable camera. We were taking photos of each other as some of my friends were moving that summer. I snapped the photo and the put up a homemade gang sign. Our old teacher didn’t know what that was but sent us all to the principals office. We tried crying our way out of it but that didn’t work. I served my time but they moved over the summer. Needless to say I was the coolest kid when I returned to 8th grade bc I had already been in in school suspension at the high school for 9days.

We didn’t have the school bus when I went to my small Catholic grammar school either. As a kindergartner I walked a little over a half a mile. Crossing guards helped kids cross the busier streets. Once my ten year old cousin was babysitting and came to walk me home. Now, my mom told me I should invite Richard to play that day. She meant at school. Being 5, I didn’t grasp the full picture and thought she meant after school. So I told the kindergarten teacher, my cousin, and Richard he was coming to my house to play. Everyone was like, “umm, we don’t know about this,” but I confidently assured them, “it’s okay, my Mom said so.” He was released into our custody, and being kids, we took the long way home, stopping at the candy store first. Afterwards, we meandered the rest of the half mile trek home slowly, stopping to play at a park, teasing a neighbors dog behind a fence, probably getting home an hour later. Meanwhile, Richard’s mom showed up to pick up her son and found out he had been kidnapped by us (keep in mind, no cell phones). It took two neighboring police departments to assist in the manhunt, but eventually they rang our doorbell and the case was solved. Ah, the 70s were a simpler time…!

I read that dreaming about forgetting your locker combination or not being prepared for a class in high school is a subconscious sign that you have a lot going on in your life at the time. I have a similar recurring dream that I can’t find a class in High school and it’s always when I’m really busy in real life. Luckily, I can lucid dream and sometimes look down in the dream to see that I have on a wedding ring and then realize I’m in a dream and start to relax and fun in the dream.

The president of the small university that I attended in Jackson Tennessee told everyone he would decide whether or not to cancel classes for a snow day by looking out his window to see if the squirrels were out. If they were then that meant people could be out in the snow too. One day the entire city was basically shutdown after an unusually heavy snowfall but apparently the squirrels were “having a good time” at his house. It wasn’t just a dusting of snow where everyone panics, it was a few inches and the roads were completely covered. In between classes that day I saw a flyer on a bulletin board advertising a “Faculty Squirrel Hunt and Stew” at the university president’s house. If I remember correctly, the snow day policy was a little bit better after that.

I had a big social studies test in Jr. High. We weren't allowed anything on our desks while taking the test. So Instead of studying the night before I spent hours modifying the guts of a mechanical pencil. I then copied all the answers from the study guide and wrote them extremely small on a piece of paper. I rolled the paper super tight and stuffed it into the pencil shaft. The big idea was to unscrew the pencil come test time, remove the paper and cup it in the palm of my hand. Test time arrived and for the life of me I could not retrieve the paper from the inside of the pencil. It was jammed. I tried so hard. The house always wins. I also had after school detention my last day of high school. But that's a story for another time. P.S. The Chosen really is a good show.

I’m 31, in Oklahoma. In high school we had both chalkboards and white boards. But I think around my freshman year a couple of the elementary classes got smart boards to “test” them for the district.

I'm 42 and I still have the "I forgot I was in the class" dream, or some variation thereof, on a regular basis. It's usually college classes, but sometimes it's highschool. Sometimes it's a college class but the setting is my high school.
