As a recent geography PhD and new geography professor, this is the episode I’ve been waiting for. If I wrote a comment trying to correct all of the things talked about here I’d have a whole thesis. It was fantastic. I think it’s crazy how many of the students I teach can’t read a map or have no spatial awareness. I even use the west wing clip in the 100 level class I teach to show that there are more ways than one to look at a 3-D world on a 2-D map. In truth, there is no one perfect way to make a map. One problem with the Mercator projection is that it distorts or stretches near the poles- Greenland looks the size of Africa but in reality it is significantly smaller. It’s bad for size comparisons but its great for marine navigation! You can’t get everything perfect on any map though, so things can get weird. Thanks for adding some humor into cartography for me. Maybe I can use clips from this episode in some classes in the future.

Every week I feel like I relate to Dusty more and more. Why would the perspective ever be that you're standing on the clock with the 6 behind you??? The whole clock conversation was so relatable. Anytime anyone asks me the time and I have to look at my watch and respond quickly I get so anxious and am constantly worried I'm going to say the wrong time. I'm basically like Nate counting the numbers under my breath (but with the worried expression of Breakfast). Don't get me started on the clocks that don't really have the numbers on them! The fact people can read those quickly blows my mind. And Nate, the idea of Dusty using his computer from behind a cardboard cutout had me dying with laughter. This was a great way to start my day!

I really enjoyed Nate's inspirational talk during the Into the Wild section. He has such a great outlook on life and seems so grounded. And his examples of paying attention to your thoughts, whether negative or too positive leaning towards ego, and grounding yourself is a great example of mindfulness (which can be a really tough skill to master). Nate may not feel smart, but he is definitely very wise!

You guys have talked about hard venues to get a laugh. I am a lawyer and can usually make my friends and clients laugh, so I thought I'd try some comedy while I was in Court. It wasn't a very serious hearing that day, so I started my opening statement to the judge with a joke. She stared at me with such a confused look. The court reporter had an even more confused look. like she was wondering if she should put "crickets chirping" in the transcript.

We're about the same age and it cracks me up that Nate and Dusty and Breakfast give you such a hard time about this show. I have the funniest story about those original GPS devices. I believe we had the Garmin. Many moons ago we were driving to my brother in laws wedding rehearsal. Since we didn’t know the area all that well we borrowed a GPS from my father in law. We put in the address and headed out. As the destination got closer and closer I realized we weren’t anywhere near a Catholic church. Suddenly the device had us turning into a mobile home park. I looked at my husband who was driving and said “now I KNOW we are lost”. He was so convinced in this product and so serious he just kept telling me that no, we were on the right track. About 30 seconds later the device says you have reached your destination. We stop right in the middle of the road and I look around at all the mobile homes around us and as my eyes land on a flamingo just twirling its wings I just started laughing. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard in my entire life.

My frustration was palpable when Dusty said there IS a right way to look at it. For my senior trip a few pals and I went down to Myrtle Beach, NC. We drove down from Akron, OH and had printed out the directions on MapQuest to get there. The issue was we didn't have access to a printer in Myrtle Beach so I had to write out the directions to get home by hand! We had two pages of my sloppy hand writing to follow and somehow managed to get back to Akron.

Different map projections are used depending on what you are trying to use the map for. Each map projection tries to minimize the distortion of shape, distance, angle, etc. This is because it's impossible to project the 3D globe into a 2D plane without some kind of distortion. I believe Mercator was used because it made the lines of latitude parallel to each other so it was easier to use when navigating the ocean.

I live in North Carolina and when I heard that Dusty Slay was coming to Bolivia, NC I thought it sounded like one of the fake “paper towns” you talked about. I’ve never heard of it so I looked it up and saw that the next town over is called Half Hell. So if either are fake it’s probably that one. Love the show! P.S. Aaron, “Whats your 20?” is part of a series of codes called the 10 codes. They are used by police and other groups to shorten communications on the radio. 10-4 is the most common and is short for “affirmative”. 10-20 is short for “whats your location”. The codes were developed in the 1930s and modified over the past 50 years. A quick search will provide a list of all the 10 codes used over time.

Hi folks. I used to teach 7th grade Geography in Sumner County. I bought some paper world maps from a local teacher store to use for my classes. Teaching class one day, I discovered the map had the Black Sea where the Baltic Sea should have been. The store wouldn’t refund my money since it wasn’t their fault.
