@@prmathYup… it was quite a disappointment. First, like Nater Tot mentions in this video, Harlan was a “character” all its own and that atmosphere was completely missing. Second, having Olyphant’s daughter playing Willa was just a useless uninspiring plot device that ultimately meant nothing. Third, having Raylan hook up with an overweight woman of color was pure Hollywood virtue signaling and completely out of character based upon Raylan’s relationship history. And finally, the main antagonist was, unlike so many of the series’ villains, totally unlikeable. Boyd’s returning for the next installment… let’s pray for a return to Kentucky. 🙏

Great video, great take on the overarching elements of what is truly one of the greatest TV shows in history. My favorite aspect of the show is the interplay between Raylan and Boyd. Their backgrounds are so similar as to be practically identical, same age and similar experiences- they are doppelgangers, two sides of the same coin. This is an old trope, to be sure, but one which has rarely been explored so thoroughly or portrayed so successfully. One gets the distinct impression that Boyd sees Raylan as the only worthy adversary in his life. Despite those adversaries that challenge him (Quarrels, Limehouse, Avery Markham, etc.) Boyd respects their capabilities and the danger they present to him- but Raylan he respects as a man. By the same token, Raylan, who has such a huge streak of loyalty running through him (which is why he keeps trying despite all the disappointments with his Daddy, Winona, Mags, and so on), he can't quite separate himself from Boyd and the ultimate connection of "we dug coal together." This, combined with his own (usually grudging) respect for Boyd's intellect, is what usually causes him to act against his own better judgement and let Boyd off the hook one more time, because he recognizes Boyd's motives are "Justified." Either that, or they both just really are having a hell of a lot of fun chasing after each other and trying to outfox each other!

I rarely buy shows on DVD, but I bought Justified the series box set. I did not watch this show until it was on DVD. Not sure why. This is one of those show I will watch several if not many times. I have offered to loan these DVD's to people that have never watched the show but have found no takers. I know there are so many things to watch these days, but they don't know what they are missing by not watching Justified. I try to watch it start to finish, but sometimes watch a random episode. I am getting more critical of shows the older I get. I'm almost 72. But Justified never disappoints.

I was a Deputy Sheriff in a rural county in Oklahoma for years, and from the very first episode of Justified, I was hooked. I have binge-watched the entire season about 8 times I guess, and still - to this day - think it is one of the best television series ever aired. I watch all the little 'clip videos' highlighting different scenarios of this series on KZbin, and they all give me the urge to go back and start watching the series again - beginning to end. I love the series; and the action, coupled with the unforgettable characters simply dazzles me, nonstop. I hate that it ended, but I now look forward to seeing more of the spin-off, Justified - The City Primeval, which only has one season behind it, and I question whether there will be more. I guess I just, subconsciously, wish I could have been the kind of Law Enforcement professional that Raylan Givens was...lol no chance LMAO

Boyd was at his best in season 1 and 2. I loved when he backslides in season 2 right after Mags Bennett gives him the keys to Harlan County criminal empire. It was his destiny and obviously his religious stuff WAS real (at least to Boyd himself) because we see him back in full force preaching in prison 4 years later in the finale.

This is my all time favorite show. If I could change anything... It's Michael Rappaports accent and the entire character of Boon, who just came out of nowhere and was way too important in the end.
@NaterTot4 жыл бұрын
It quickly became one of mine too, Christopher. I have to say, I do agree with you on Rapaport's accent. I think he struggled, pronouncing some words in his NY accent that somewhat took me out of the moment. The only way to get around that is a different casting. I'm on the fence with Boon. I think the series wanted to have someone stand toe to toe with Raylan, someone that was an outside force that didn't abide by their ways, and didn't fear him. In that idea, it worked, but I do think he has a REALLY important part at the end that didn't entirely feel 'justified'. I think that moment should have been spent a bit more on Boyd's draw with Raylan.
@ComedyBros54 жыл бұрын
@@NaterTot Exactly. We needed someone that really threatened Raylan's life. I still remember the gut-wrenching fear that Givens bit the dust in that episode, all because of how killer of a gunslinger Boon was!

Really happy to have found this. I've "binged" Justified 3 times now, and it never gets old. By far the best TV Fare ever produced. I had recently moved away from Lexington after 16 years, and was awakened about 6 months later at 5AM by several US Marshal's surrounding my home in StL about 6 months later (a misunderstanding that thankfully was quickly and peacefully resolved), then Justified came along. It seemed destined for me to watch. I agree to some extent with the Raylan/Tim, Raylan/Rachel interaction. I could have lived with more of that in place of the Patton Oswalt crap, but sometimes quality over quantity is the ticket. The scenes with those 3 characters were some of the best. "I don't miss", is a classic ex-Ranger line. Also, as I said, I lived in and traveled around a lot of rural KY, and Margo Martindale's portrayal of Mags Bennett was an Emmy waiting to happen. I met several Mags' in my time there, and she nailed it. "Next ones coming faster" is one of the greatest single lines in movie/TV history.

Thank you for giving a fair review! Justified is my favorite show, I watch it over and over and keep finding new tidbits, get new perspectives on things and see things in a different way. I believe Raylan and Boyd are best friends, Boyd being the only one honest enough to embrace it. Boyd is also hands down, the best silver tongue villain ive seen! Hey you want some tidbits? When Dewey leaves Wade Messer who is played by James LeGros in the woods in season 5, episode 4; The family who helps him out of the woods are saying "We gotta get him outta here, pronto!", LeGros played Raylan Givens in the TV movie "Pronto", where he played somewhat more of a goofball, which is still referenced and not forgotten throughout Justified. Givens is seen eating ice cream a couple of times throughout the series, and he also went nextdoor to pickup some icecream when Roland Pike was watching the christmas special, years before the show. Season 5, when Raylan shoots Deweys above ground pool, they are playing and saying "Marco.. Polo".. In the same episode, Ron Yuan has a guest appearance, and also plays Prince Nayan in seaon 2 of Netflix's Marco Polo. Totally random, but ahead of time.

I figure it must be a very popular series because, having seen a few shorts online, I searched for a boxed set and it took me years to find one. The cast was incredibly good in their roles, the writing had a degree of intricacy and mostly avoided diverging into cliche. In their various roles, the characters stayed true to their motivations and background. Dewey and his cousins didn't become wise or cease to be brutal because that was who they were, how they'd learned to survive. The same is true of the Bennetts and Raylan's father. Like the Sicilian people under the Romans, Vandals, etc, they created their own inviolable culture to cope with laws exercised by 'others' and developed their own version of the Mafia. I, too, wish to have seen more of Guttersson but they never asked me...heh. Lastly, I did NOT wish for Raylan to grow. He was someone needed, just like Paul Kearsey in Deathwish. Raylan was willing to put one foot over the line and would not pull his punches when dealing with people who'd gone completely over the line. His sensibilities were outraged by the same things that outraged the people he tried to protect. The existing system was too slow or too broken and he declined to relax into it.

Justified is a fantastic series. I also had the same grip about Gutterson and Brooks, I wish they were more utilized. I actually found some fantastic fan fiction ( here is the link: www.fanfiction.net/u/3732277/freshouttaideas), that really delved deeper into Gutterson and Brooks partnership as well as their relationship with Raylan. It is really great. Justified feels like a spiritual sequel to Deadwood; not just because of Timothy Olyphant but because it always had this sort of mythical quality to it. Though the writing wasn't in iambic pentameter, there was a lyrical quality to every line. You have to check out Banshee and the criminally short Quarry, both are really well written and Quarry actually has many of the same actors as Justified

After more than a new decades on this planet, I can testify that JUSTIFIED is the best TV series I've ever seen. Period. Bar none. As mentioned, the writing is incredible for a TV show. Hell, it would have been excellent in movies or better yet, stage productions. The acting - ditto. Production values? Absolute top notch. That said... There's been plenty of truly great shows over the years that had the same elements, but this one truly had a realism to it that producers in Hollywood try to create their entire lives. As a viewer, you of course knew you were watching a fictional production - but it just felt REAL and you fell right into the next episode like you'd never left the last one. Olyphant said afterwards he thought they should have continued, but the show's creator pulled the plug; that follows what appears to be more and more the "plan" for such shows these days. Six seasons is what they aim for when they start these things; actors' original contracts are written for that period of time oftentimes from the get-go and maybe Justified was intended that way, too. All I know is - there was plenty of gas left in that tank and it was a shame to see it go. -Ed on the Ridge
