I love that your girls are almost always calm and patient. It speaks volumes about your interaction with them (ofc the farmers have a role as well) and I think a lot of it has to do with your presence that you show. I know everyone has their own way of going about hoof trimming and I do not know enough about it to judge, but my observation is your trims are pleasant which I value so much. Other trimmers I have seen tend to try to get really aggressive filming, while laughing, joking loudly and trying to be super fast all the while trying to sell something. Their cows always seem so reactive. Each to their own but thank you for showing what careful and patient trimming is about. Your focus is the cows well-being. Thank you for being a good human and caretaker! Be well! ❤

He's not always been a hoof trimmer but he grew up around cows as a kid and helped hoof trimmers. And then he was working with cows again after college, helping a hoof trimmer again and then decided that he'd ask the hoof trimmer if he could teach him. That guy did teach him after he paid him 8k in USD for three months of training and thus became a hoof trimmer. I hope this explains some things!

You might have been seeing things with the first cow, but I have seen hoof trimming videos where there was a problem that couldn't easily be seen. In that case, it became apparent after it got worse. Until then, not much could be done, because there would be no way to know where to trim. You would be flying blind and could cause more harm than good.

Thanks! I’m always curious, do you meet with someone on the farm to give a summary after you’ve worked on an animal? I can imagine some farms are huge with so many cows, so is there like a formal or informal process afterwards where you discuss treatments, issues, etc?

2290 looked like she had some green discolouration on the back end of that hoof (top of picture). I'm wondering if they get walked through a copper sulphate foot-bath from time to time, as an infection control measure? That would explain the green-blue stain.

Nate, kind of a dark question: How often are hooves at a point where there is no saving them and therefore, the fate of the animal is questioned? It doesn't seem like too often, but I would have to think there are a few cases where if a vet is called in, it maybe too far gone for the poor girl.
@HeleTCMАй бұрын
Have you ever considered using compressed air or some sort of low pressure power washer when doing some of these cleanings? Just to get rid of some of the obstructive materials. I have no experience in this, but just curious.

@bevakathedementedraccoonАй бұрын
I'm gonna assume you're new to the channel, so welcome. He's explained in other vids so i'll try to power phrase Nate lol. The majority of the time theres no real need to wash and scrub the foot. The first few seconds with either the knife or the grinder removes all the surface horn that would be covered with muck. And the spray he uses throughout to wash away any extra muck or yuckiness from inside the hoof is chlorhexidine (a very strong disinfectant!). the powder is salicylic acid which kills bacteria and hardens the tissue up a bit helping it heal and the wrap keeps it in place long enough to work it's magic. With all the good stuff at the end, a "pre-trim" foot wash isn't needed. My own opinion for this one was, for dairy cows those feet were incredibly muck free lol. They can be WAY grosser looking
@carris9054Ай бұрын

Over time have you ever noticed particular cows who just seem to develop problems more frequently than others? Like some congenital issue? Just wonder if you see some of the same ones over and over.
@gigispridejoy380Ай бұрын
I imagine the smell is always bad, but, I would also think that for the most part you get used to it, there must be exceptions though😂. Then I wonder how you can touch the bottom of the hoof with your bare hand? With all the poop on it, But, there also, maybe you think of it as organic material so maybe it’s just not gross to you? You must love what you’re doing, so therefore you’re comfortable with it? I think it’s wonderful how you care about these cows. How sad it would be if there weren’t people like you who have the capability of caring for these animals.
@jeffgee6319Ай бұрын
Never thought the most shocking thing about one of your vids was finding out that cows cough EXACTLY like people. But, that just happened.

I am most impress with this video though I've seen you tend to much worst cow hooves. What impressed me the most is how gentle the chute was when lifting the hooves which appeared to be done at a normal speed. I read a lot of complaints about these chutes being cruel to the cows which they are not. People need to understand that cows need to be restrained and this equipment is the most human way to do it.
