It still can be. Art is extremely subjective. You can interpret the song however you like and you'll still be right. This is just to show what Nate was thinking when he wrote the song and when he plays the song. I thought the song was about escaping from your problems at first but then you realize you have to face them in order to surpass them.

So I'd like to point out for thats that...may not have noticed, but Nate is still doing it... He's still referencing earlier things he's done in his newest songs. "You're not a shadow, you won't fade." A direct callback to Hold onto You, which had "We're just shadows, meant to fade." And then: "And that's all logic, takes no luck to see the end." Come on? Nate's voice acting work for the dub of Luck and Logic? Jumped out at me before the above one ever did. I suspect there's one more that I'm missing somewhere.

I wanna cry every time I listen to this. It's such a powerful song. I'm not sure how Nate actually meant for it to come across, but for me, especially with the video, It's about helping someone overcome depression. The smoke dragon symbolizes the dark thoughts that come with being depressed. Not to mention "She found a way out of this place, it's a permanent escape." I feel like it's all about a girl with depression wanting to end it all, and a boy coming along to help her cure it. Hence him killing the dragon (suppressing the dark thoughts) and then they show up somewhere with light. I'm currently struggling with depression, so this hits really close to home with me. I have some battle scars, but my boyfriend's helping me kill the dragon.

I had this song resonate with me for a while (I'm in a better place now thankfully) because it reminded me of my anxiety and the tough times I went through. Taking new medications, feeling hopeless... saving suicide for a rainy day. Praying for better days... and as Nate said, I never did fade. Even with the music video, and... I'm glad I found someone like the boy in the video. Having someone to help fight off the worries. Hey Nate, thanks for getting me through some rough shit. And maybe they're all just songs, it's not my business to read into it, but I hope you're doing well too and if not, I hope you get somewhere better.
