Every honeybee has a job to do. Some are nurses who take care of the brood; some are janitors who clean the hive; others are foragers who gather pollen to make honey. Collectively, honeybees are able to achieve an incredible level of sophistication, especially considering their brains are only the size of sesame seeds. But how are these jobs divvied up, and where do bees learn the skills to execute them?

I maintained a top bar hive for about a year. In the winter, an estimated 90% of the bees died. But, the 10% who survived included the queen. Once food was available, the population quickly rebounded.

At 01:11 the drone has a varroa destructor mite on its thorax right in the middle. If we can just get those mites under control, the entire world of beekeeping will change for the better. At 03:15 those aren't honey bees, but they are also awesome! Thank you for sharing, bees are an endless source of learning and can lead us to a better understanding of our environment.

@@Tentacular dude (or dudette) actually they are fascinating, look up their voting systems for determining the next hive location. Several bees find new spots, and they describe the location, and the bees vote on where to live, majority taking hold. Bees communicate, so we can observe a little of their decision making. We can see the A to B but we don't know. Same how our parents make decision B to response A, but we can only guess why. We get better at guessing as we know them more, but remember how often we find out there is more to the story? Parents hide a lot from us. (It's only relevant because "we don't know what we don't know" and if it's true with the ones closest to us, millions of years of differences can be staggeringly different :) ) Scientifically, how could we test their experience? @TragoudistrosMPH
@TragoudistrosMPH 5 жыл бұрын
@@Tentacular and that's my point. Is emotion special? Philosophy and religion are the reasons Western societies think emotions are special because we are 'special/higher beings'. Science started with that premise and is testing it, but you have to start with either animals do or don't have emotions. I don't see proof for either, but I'd lean towards emotions because general feelings and preferences sound more plausible than finely tuned reactions to so many varied situations. Preferences, alone, make me think it's likely, because we typically feel out preferences. I don't know a good scientific test for it, so I'm not decided :) The voting isn't romanticization, the scouts compete, describing the location they found and the bees select among those. I didn't describe how or even if they feel anyway about it. It's interesting stuff, though.

As vespas andam aí!!

At 2:30 you say they leave the hive to collect pollen. Correct me if I'm wrong. But don't they go out to collect nectar, and the pollen is there from the plants for their own reproduction, not really used by the bees.

Bees also bring back pollen. It is made into something called bee bread and is fed to baby bees.
@ptuxbury
@ptuxbury 5 жыл бұрын
Agree with Stan. Nectar is not a source of protein, but pollen is. The bees bring it back to feed the brood so they can grow. Do a Google image search of "bee pollen basket", and you'll see the bees carry the pollen on their rear legs to bring back to the hive.

I love honey bees, I am not a bee keeper, but I plant flowers for honey bees and butterflies. It just surprised me how good they are around me, they never sting me at all. I have one concern though, I put hummingbird nectar in my garden, and the bees are the one who consume it and looks like they become fatter lol.

Before any bees flew out of the hive for the first time to do their first orientation flight , they have to align themselves with the earth's magnitic field . It is so surprising that very few people , including many of the bee keeping experts , know how bees do that !!!

Correction Honey Bee Drones will also mate with Queens from the same Colony. Correction number 2 Worker bees will feed Drones inside the hive and outside the hive. I have countless videos of this behavior. Correction 3 Honey bee workers role has nothing to do with genetics Workers can switch role from being Nurse Bees Guard Bees Scouts bees Builder Bees and Forager bees. I have had young bees that are still greyish go out foraging before they are even 30 hours old. Correction 4 Drones can only emerge from Drone Comb that Sir is decided by the worker bees where the Queen is to lay Drone eggs. I figure you have not kept bees before haha I will teach you lol

They collect pollen on their back legs and bring it back to the hive to feed the brood (it's a protein source needed for the brood to grow). Some of the pollen happens to transfer from one flower to another in the process.
