I was most impressed by the fact that they are keeping their culture alive. they appear to want to keep their independence and not be a burden on the government. The fact that the Indian population is trying to take their land away is very disturbing. Unfortunately, some of this reminds me of our own country.

Thanks National Geographic for this! Until recently I didn't know about the Siddi people.. and I'm from Karnataka 🤔 this shows how much we're not taught at schools and at homes about our own people. Caste system is a plague in Indian modern society. It has no business in the 21st century. Thousands of years of this system has led to a mindset where one's worth is judged by their skin color. I happen to be from an upper caste family and I've seen and heard atrocious things uttered by my relatives regarding other castes and races. Why is it so difficult to see a human being as a human being? There's no need to be blind to characteristic, rather, we need to be open enough to celebrate the differences while respecting the humanity behind everyone. Also loved the narrator speaking pure Kannada. It was a breath of fresh air 😁

As a Kannadiga myself, his articulation in Kannada is spectacular and way ahead of 95% of the Kannadigas in Bengaluru as well as in many other places. It's really a tragedy to see that the Siddis have faced oppression not only form British but also from the Indian localities. The Siddi community speak the same language as us, wear the same clothing as us, even the occupation is the same, culture might be different but there are different cultures from the different area, the culture and customs are different in Mysore, Raichur, Gulbarga and other places. So why can't we do the same? I think it's in Human nature- its insecurity, superiority, the weakness that there are these divisions. We see the same in Japan, Greece, China and any other major civilizations. It's really sad.

Many times in history the conquering people become conquered and end up being enslaved when they become the minority. India could own their civilization through this enlightened black race. Though I'm in Africa I believe a lot of Indian words originated from my language. Like mantra-means originally 'clay tablets', Vidas as fadase-for thanksgiving, siva- as seifo the destroyer, savarag as sagye meaning redeemer/saviour. Even personal names like Kumar, Bappiah, Gyatatir, Mainu, Nanna* the titles of the early black king of lndia) etc are a few I know. So no Indian should mistreat blacks. Your heritage lies with us.

As a Brahmin I’m really ashamed of my community. My parents are originally from the geographical area spoken about in this documentary (Mangalore). We Indians have sabotaged ourselves all the time by giving too much importance to caste, gender, heeding to family pressure etc. But the bright side is things are changing drastically... people born after late 70s particularly 80s and 90s born people are very open minded and more accepting.... more westernised actually... so these outdated terrible practices and mindset will be gone for good in few decades.
@vineethv16296 жыл бұрын
Brahmanism is not a caste, it's a way of life. The one who abides and follows the teachings/vedantas of any one charya can be a Brahmin. Casteism as portrayed or defined in Western way is not the way it was back then where the profession was heriditory. The priests were called Brahmins, the warriors were called Kshatriyas, traders were called Vaishyas and the labourers were called Shudras. In later decades Casteism became a form of Racism. Problems are all over the world, we Indians need to stop over exaggerating and find the real solution for the issues.
@srividyarao78206 жыл бұрын
vineeth v yes in traditional sense Brahmanism is way of life. But it has become a “caste” now and that’s how I have to address it. I don’t know if you are trying to say I’m exaggerating it... if that’s the case.... let me tell you I have witness my community people discriminate other people every single day of my life. It’s a very real thing. First step to solution is to acknowledge the problem and taking responsibility. Problem won’t go away by denying it or by getting defensive.
@vineethv16296 жыл бұрын
@@srividyarao7820 I do agree with your point and I'm aware of the social issues. Yes there are people who are exploiting the so called lower castes in the name of tradition which ethically is wrong, but you are making your points from their perspective. Infact almost equal no of Brahmins and other communities which are branded as higher castes are being exploited by our own govt in the name of reservation. I've seen people having cars and huge mansions seeking for reservation seats and scholarship, where as the poor General merits are deprived of these govt schemes just because of their caste. My point is you don't deal with social issues by creating one and the acknowledgement should be from both the sides.

You’d be surprised. Indians are extremely racist,
@dhritinair45236 жыл бұрын
Shqiptarja e zeze I am an Indian, and this is true to a certain extent. Indians that live in rural areas are more likely to be racist than people living in urban areas that are more exposed to different cultures and races.

Hinduism is not a religion of hate. The ignorance and racist of these indians is outrageous yes and should be condemned. I am of indian descent. Some Indians do have a tendency to be racist and not only against another race but also against indians who are darker. Its a systemic problem in a lot of the races of teh world that lighter is better. Not ALL indians feel the way as teh ones in the above documentary. I am of indian descent,; I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and I have a lot of african friends. The head yoga teacher of a yoga society I belong to is african and he visits india regularly AND is on his way to become a swami. An indian swami actually taught him yoga. SO NOT ALL indians are bad. The same indian swami denounced the caste system as well as welcomed my african uncle (I call him uncle as a sign of respect as he is older than me and has known me since I was small) into the yoga tradition. So while you should condemn the indians in teh video, DO NOT CONDEMN ALL indians!!!

An excellent short film. Sadly, the film only confirms the extent to which prejudice and discrimination exists throughout India. On a more positive note, the film is testament to the resilience of the Siddi people and their determination to be fully recognized as citizens of India and to be acknowledged as having the same rights at the rest of the Indian population. Many thanks.

Well this may sound weird to you but as bad as Indians are regarding public hygiene, we are equally neurotic when it comes to personal hygiene. If you are an Indian living anywhere upwards of a lower middle class lifestyle, you'll be forced by your parents to take a bath at least twice a day. This obsession with personal hygiene increases with your economic status. This isn't a new trend either. It has been like this for centuries. Why do you think a land as densely populated as India never suffered epidemics of the scale of Europe when half your population was wiped out by the black plague? That being said, this kind of racism isn't reserved only for the Siddis. Every community in India which isn't able to afford the above mentioned standard of hygiene is treated badly. That being said things are changing very fast and such things will likely completely disappear in a couple of decades.

Not everywhere dear!!! In Trinidad and Tobago we have 37% Indian origin, 37% african origin and rest mixed race, european, chinese, syrians, amerindians etc. We all live happily together. Honestly most of this is through western lens propaganda. They are no more discriminated than other poor and rural Indians. Most of them were brought in as slaves from Islamic empires and Persians even the Siddhis invaded and colonized parts of India.

To whoever supports caste system: "Occupational titles are awarded by education not by birth. The original caste system started that way. It was never meant to be misused. Mugging up the whole Bhagvad Gita doesn't equals understanding Hinduism. It is equal to mugging up the academic syllabus just to show off at the exam which we all know is good for nothing. Don't be a fake Hindu" Hinduism started as an Egalitarian System of belief. I never expected Bantus to be in India. But now I am so glad how India has been such a great shelter for so many people.

Aruna K just take the indian movie 'bahubali'. All the members of royal families are depicted to be fair skinned people and all the poor villagers are dark skinned people. However, I highly doubt that there were any whiye south indians before the European invasion

It ultimately comes down to which part of India are they from, people in the north specifically Punjab and Kashmir are quite a bit fairer compared to most South Indians

@ronzac556 жыл бұрын
They are treated badly even to the core of their land ownership rights. The forest can be abundant and all but their basic needs still need more improvement. They need to be treated equally. If you have a pet, you'd understand. Your pet live in a comfort life with abundance and treated with love. Now look at the siddi people that they have to eat outside on the banana leaves.

these people are not pets, they are humans and making any comparison to animals and them is wrong. they need the dignity to live how they want and where they want and they need government action to ensure that those around them respect their rights as land owners just as any Indian who comes to the USA and buy land would want their right as land owners respected.
@sk59406 жыл бұрын
@Melanin wise. Siddhi or सिद्धी is sanskrit word. (Language in india) looking at their lifestyle they maybe indigenous tribe nothing related to africa. There are many dark skinned tribes in india, darker than africans. May have evolved differently and nothing do with africa.
