Eri Hayward was born as a boy in Utah and raised in the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Filmmaker Torben Bernhard shot this poignant short, Transmormon, just before Eri flew to Thailand for sexual reassignment surgery. In the piece, she and her family talk about the long and often painful journey it took to recognize and embrace her transgender identity and the role their faith played along the way. "Being LDS was our life," she says. "It's one of the reasons I didn't find out about what being trans was until I was an adult."

I was born and raised Mormon, I’m still active, and I want people to know that this is RIGHT. This is soul, this is family, this is God. This story is incredible and heartfelt. Eri’s situation is unique and I cannot even imagine how painful it is to be going through this. If she were my friend in the church, I would stick up for her right to be there or consider leaving if they rejected her. Major props to her father for being such a beautiful and adaptive person. Incredible parents and I would do the same for my child

Either you are not active or you literally don't pay attention AT ALL during church. Dallin H Oaks, "We live in a day when there are many political, legal, and social pressures for changes that confuse gender and homogenize the differences between men and women. Our eternal perspective sets us against changes that alter those separate duties and privileges of men and women that are essential to accomplish the great plan of happiness. "

@@nickdipaolofan5948 Because Latter-day saints believe that we were born spirits in life before earth, and after earth, we will be spirits. Whatever gender our spirit was born in is what we will be forever. Our bodies we have right now will return to their original form in the afterlife. The prophets have been wrong before, but this fact is something every single prophet has been teaching forever; it is incredibly unlikely that they are wrong about this.

I’m a Muslim who was raised in a small minded community, so the idea of a transgender was somewhat a diabolical thing to me. But after seeing so many people go through THIS just to be themselves, just to fit into this world, just to be happy with themselves really upsets me. Just be supportive of other people and let them be happy, their decisions do NOT affect you in any way so why not support them? If I had a child who is going through this, I would do anything to make sure that I see them happy by supporting them even if it goes against religion or not.

This is not someone "being themself", this is some experiencing some kind of issue and responding in the worst way possible. Instead of stepping up and confronting the problem he is giving up and allowing it to dictate who/what he is. This is not a matter of feelings/emotions, acceptance, or identity. This is an issue of mental health. You never tell someone with a disorder to accept it or do what feels right, because that's how suicide or homicide happens. There's a reason why we don't tell someone with depression that their death will solve everything or tell schizophrenics to listen to the voices. This is a dangerous game they are playing with other peoples' lives.

When I see before and after pictures of trans people it's weird because I struggle to see them as the same person. It's like "this person is clearly a woman, but this picture is of a boy????" (since my brain reads the pre-transition person in the picture as a boy) and it's confusing, haha ^^ It's even weirder when they look roughly the same (like if they haven't had a lot of facial surgery or anything so their features are roughly the same before and after) so it's kind of like looking at a picture of their opposite sex twin or something.

I wish that we knew more about them since this was shot. Her family were amazing people that supported her in the Mormon society that drips religion like sweat and are 100% unforgiving or understanding. So it was inspiring to hear the words of her father, as well as her intent to remain faithful to the religion she feels help give meaning to her life. It was a great video.

Mormonism is very conservative, yes, but I think a lot of Mormons also try to be chill and flexible and they love their kids a lot. The LDS church is an offshoot of Christianity and as all sects and offshoots practice Christianity differently, it is simply specific to say Mormonism. We're talking about the way Mormons practice their belief in Christianity, not just Christianity. There are many ways that people are Christian, some conservative, some liberal.

Interesting how there is so much hate for Mormons when this video CLEARLY represents Mormon parents who are 100% accepting of their trans daughter. Anti-Mormons using this video as a platform to spit vile words against the entire Mormon community is disgusting. As a Mormon, I've met religious and non-religious alike who have almost brought me to tears because of their goodness. I have also met religious and non-religious people who have disgusted me with the way they can hate. Most people are somewhere in the middle, just normal people trying to live life the best they can. Religious or not, we all have sets of beliefs that guide what we think is right and most importantly the way we treat other people. Usually when someone's beliefs (remember, religious or not - we all have a set of beliefs) are challenged they resist rather than try and understand. I think it would be a great idea if we all try to understand each other, rather than shaking fingers at each other.
