Must be my age because I find this vid, more thrilling than "Clash of the Titans III". What a beautiful crossing!

There is a specific order for opening and closing - when closing against traffic the entrance gates (facing direction of traffic) should be closed first, then the exit gates. Likewise in reverse it should be exit before entrance, but in practice it can be difficult and on occasion motorists will take liberties. I helped rewire and rebuild the system in 2012. At the moment I'm mainly operating Porthmadog signalbox and in winter will be working out on the track. :)

+Peter Procter I know that the gates against the traffic close first like a barrier crossing, but when he opens them, it should be gate 4 then 3 etc but it isn't, even though traffic was on both sides. I bet Porthmadog though doesn't get a lot of traffic! A two hour service! Do you get to take a look at Cae Pawb crossing?

+Nathan A RF There can be a lot of traffic through Penrhyn at times. Trains are more frequent on the current yellow timetable but this is the last week. Yep I operate Cae Pawb regularly at the moment, split half and half with Porthmadog box.

+NewBuildmini We have many volunteers who perform varied roles on the railway but that keeper is an employee - the railway is owned and operated by the Festiniog Railway Company (note the single F, the legal spelling) which is the world's oldest independent railway operating company, formed by Act of Parliament in London in 1832. We predate the vast majority of railways around the globe and ours was the very first narrow gauge line - the FR is where it all started.

+Nathan A RF Aye, we're a good bunch. :) Once upon a time Janet Davies, the mother of the late long term driver Evan Davies lived in one of the cottages on the crossing and operated it for many years. A family of active volunteers now lives in the terrace just below the crossing and occasionally operate it when paid staff aren't available such as during winter (as well as performing active roles elsewhere - the brother and sister are both loco firemen and their father along with them is a driver, and very involved with the heritage projects). We're all proud to play our part. :)

Very much agree with with the sentiment on Narrow gauge railways! I suppose they’re all revival railway networks now, assuming any exist at all? I love the manually operated barriers too. I suppose they would be too heavy for automatic operation, but these seem like the thing you really want to stop traffic at a level crossing. Glorious

Wouldn't it be easier to close both gates at one side then the other instead of fannying about like this? 😰😡
@tallman11282
@tallman11282 7 жыл бұрын
Nigel C Ingle It'd be easier but not safe. It is normal for the entrance gates to be closed first so cars cannot start across the crossing then the exit gates are closed. The same thing happens at automated crossings where the whole crossing is gated, the entrance gates close first then a few seconds later the exit gates close, to allow anyone already on the crossing to clear.
@nigelkthomas9501
@nigelkthomas9501 7 жыл бұрын
tallman11282 I can understand automatic crossings doing that, but this looks like bloody hard work! Might this crossing be automatically controlled one day?
@emdB67
@emdB67 6 жыл бұрын
I can understand the reason for closing the entrance gates first. But after closing the second one, why not close the exit gate at the end he's already at, rather than cross back to the other side for that exit gate and save himself another walk back to the one on the side he was before? I used to help out the stationmaster when he was busy with other duties by opening the gates on a busy road in a small Australian town. 90° crossing though, so much simpler. But not as picturesque as this one. :)
