Sorry guys! At Edington (the battle mentioned at the end) Viking king Guthrum lost the day and Alfred the Great, king of the Saxons won the battle and forced Guthrum to convert.

As an American, I have to admit that among bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the 1970s/80s, Saxon never reached the same level of success here as bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. I'd heard a song here or there, but I wasn't too familiar with them. This video makes me want to go back and give their catalog a better look, so thanks to Amon Amarth for that and a great collaboration.

I have to say even though I was born in Britain and come from the historic Danelaw (the area controlled by the Vikings in the 9th - 11th centuries) and the song is very much about the Saxons and Vikings in Britain. I did think about what is now northern Germany where the Danes built a defensive wall against the Saxons so I am not sure which side would have won especially given King Harold Godwinson defeated Harald Hardrada (often styled the last Viking) before going to the South and losing to William at Hastings (the new style of Vikings - a.k.a. Normans)

This song is on the Great Heathen Army album now King Edward died by the Army while King Alfred who was mentioned at the start of the song is the one who beat the army making the Saxons victorious in the battle. King Edward was named Edward the Martyr while King Alfred was named Alfred the Great
