Silent Hill 2 was good, but I’ve always wondered why it gets so much love. It wasn’t THAT good. Silent Hill 1 gave me nightmares. 3 was cool, killing folks with your eye lasers and whatnot, and (I know I’m in the minority) but I really liked The Room 🤷‍♀️

That built-in DVD player was absolutely BONKERS for when it released. DVD players alone were like $300+. I got a PS2 that Christmas, and by complete happenstance. Here's the story, and I promise it's a good one: I actually gave my mom $200 as buffer money, to help pay for it IF she found one. (I sold my N64 and all my games, controllers, accessories, etc. to get that cash. Wish I hadn't, now that I'm a retro collector, but how else do you get big cash at 15?) She went to over a dozen stores, and at like the 15th store (Circuit City, "Where service is state of the art") she went to the customer service desk and asked if they had any PS2s. She expected another "No." The worker went back into the stock room and get this: there was ONE left. It was a layaway that had been abandoned and not paid for. Whoever had put it on layaway hadn't claimed it in time, and the layaway had just expired an hour earlier! It was such an astronomically rare thing. There was even a woman behind my mom that asked for one, and my mom got the last one. (RIP that kid's Christmas) She slapped down the cash and got it. But there's more: So Christmas morning comes and I saw nothing that looked like a PS2 under the tree. I was disappointed, but I expected it, so it wasn't like, catastrophic. I opened a bunch of games and a memory card, etc etc. (I still wanted to have all that stuff for when I finally did get a PS2.) After everything was opened, and no PS2 to be seen, my mom says, "I'm so sorry that I couldn't find one. Let me go get the $200 you gave me." I suspected nothing, she played it off like a champ. Instead of coming back out with my money, she walks out with a wrapped box the size of a PS2. And I opened it and saw the beautiful deep blue box. Omfg. There's still a picture of me, clutching the half-opened gift with a gigantic smile of amazement on my face. I WAS FLOORED. You better believe I called like 4 of my friends and told them to come over immediately hahah It was the most memorable Christmas ever. I had Eternal Ring, Summoner and Contra for my first games. All 3 games are fantastic in their own right, and the graphical jump from the PS1/N64 era to that generation was... utterly astounding to say the least. So anyway. I'm like 35 now and I will still never forget that Christmas, to my dying day! Thanks for reading. 😎

My Dad gave me his PS2 and I still have it :) He bought it second hand from a video store in January 2000 for $100 plus a Memory Card. (We also have the manual in its original bag). The storekeeper told him that the man who sold it to him said that his son wanted an XBOX for Christmas but the father knew nothing about video consoles so, he bought the XBOX for his son and traded the PS2 for XBOX games. After playing several games over the years, my PS2 wasn't loading up properly and some games even skipped. My Dad showed me how to take it apart, (we did it together) and I cleaned the laser eye and rubbed a bit of silicon paste where there is a platform made of an iron rod wrapped with a coil wire that moves the platform as the machine plays the disc. We carefully put the unit back together and ... it plays as if it just left the factory :) It's quiet. No noise except for the fan. My Dad and I visit some of the Thrift and second hand stores and video stores for PS2 games and we found quite a few good ones. I bought "Resident Evil 4" for $20, "Silent Hill 2" (no manual) for $10! (Both my ultimate faves). We managed to complete the series of "Lara Croft," "Splinter Cell," "SOCOM US Navy Seals," "Hitman," and "Syphon Filter," plus two or three other games that ran in a short series :) I don't want to play DVDs or CDs on my PS2. It's for games only. I have 72 games so far. Oh yes, had to buy a new controller. The "X" button on the old one didn't press down. New controller - $8.99. With all these great games still around and a "new" PS2 console, who would want anything else? Good video review by the way :)

I don't think we'll ever experience a generational leap like we did when we jumped from PS1 to PS2. It was wild. Sure, moving to PS3 and 360 was still pretty staggering but not at all on the same level. Just the polygon count alone really gives you an idea of what were talking about, Lara Croft was made of around 230 polygons while the main character in SH3 was close to 6000.

Not only was PS2 responsible for most of my beloved gaming memories, it was also the beginning of my musical career. I was 14 or 15 when I bought MUSIC 3000 and it was infinitely better than my elementary school music teacher. The tools it provided taught me almost every trick I still use in the music I make today on FL Studio 20. I still have two PS2's at my moms house in storage, they both have a faulty controller 1 ports. I think I should get them back and repair the ports so I can play those games again. It's funny how my friend miraculously got a PS5 but almost all of his library consists of upgraded PS4 titles. It's ridiculous that we have these state of the art powerhouses but barely any games that utilizes its full potential.

I can guarantee you if developers took as much advantage of todays hardware as they did back then, we’d be seeing much better graphics and performance than we currently are. Just look at 360 and ps3 games for instance, some of them run at native hd resolution and have decently detailed textures and run smooth enough, and they did all that with 500 mb of ram. On top of that, some developers didn’t take advantage of the ps3s SPEs in the early days, so a lot of the games just ran on one cpu core.

I think the PS2 was the best in its generation, one of the best consoles in history. It was released 1-2 years sooner than its competitors in most countries. It was cheaper. And was literally the best way to watch DVDs which was the equivalent of KZbin back in the day. With that said, the next generation (as a whole) was the better console generation. Hear me out. If you owned a Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 in the same house that was great. The Wii gave you lots of child and family friendly games, and the gimmick/motion gaming with your guests. The PS3 gave you a BluRay player and some of the best exclusives ever. And the 360 was a cheaper console, great graphics, and the best online multiplayer experience. So you had three distinct experiences during that eight year 2005-2013 period. During the five year 2000-2005 period of the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox. Well it wasn't as diverse. The online multiplayer was in its infancy. The GameCube had many great games, but nothing as special as the Wii with its power to get your grandparents to play. Whilst the PS2 was a great DVD player and had some great exclusives. As a whole, this generation wasn't as diverse as it's predecessor. Things got worse later with the WiiU, XB1, and PS4. That's when slow loading times, day one patches, and microtransactions became prominent. The midcycle "Pro" refresh was rather lackluster from the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Whilst the Nintendo Switch made for a disappointing WiiU upgrade for TV connected use, it was a revolutionary upgrade for anyone coming from a 3DS for Portable Console. The latest generation with PS5 and XSX is exciting, for the fact that the consoles have returned to competing against PC Gaming hardware wise. So I expect this is going not going to be a short 4-year lifespan but rather a lengthy 8-year one. In terms of "handhelds" we have the Valve SteamDeck (and it is a Console) which I think is going to be great for this generation. As for Nintendo, we don't know what they will release, but it's soon. According to their history it is a 2-year window (DSi XL to 3DS, or New 3DS-XL to Switch). And since we just got a "new" OLED Switch in 2021, I think that means Nintendo is halfway working on its next-gen console which they will release in November 2023. It is possible Nintendo will keep the Switch as a budget console for handhelds, and make it's next-gen console a Home/TV unit instead. We will have to wait and see.

I think a lot of it is underexposed because of that variety. Many people bought Nintendo's older consoles for their first party offerings and many people bought PlayStation's for their third party offerings. Most Nintendo console owners will have played a lot more games in common than PlayStation owners will have with each other due to the wider variety of third party offerings on those consoles.

@@walterreedjr6762 sadly it would never have been possible. Previous PlayStations were only backwards compatible because they had the old physical hardware inside them. PS3 had a physical PS1 inside it, which is why you can put in almost any PS1 disc and it will work without emulation. This has totally changed with PS4 and PS5, since the hardware and machine languages are completely different. All they can do is software emulation. There is a PS2 emulator bundled in the new consoles, but it’s far from perfect and you need to jailbreak the console to get it to play games that you didn’t buy off PS Store

I never managed to beat all of them before i eventually got rid of my ps2... i really wish i had kept it. We all thought games and gaming were just going to keep getting better and better as time went on. The games look prettier but overall gaming experience is getting worse. I love my PS2. I bought it back in I think it was either the spring or summer of 2012. £3.50 from a fella in a car-boot sale. and managed to find a controller for it for another £1. My uncle provided me with the cables and a memory card since he never threw them away, dug out a composite-capable television and I'd play on it for hours on end every Saturday. When the summer rolled around each year, I'd go car-boot spelunking with my nan and my sister each week. and over the course of about 4 years of doing this I accumulated some 50 games all for around £1-3 each. Good stuff too. I got a copy of Half-Life, the console exclusive Call of Duty titles, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, NFS Underground 1 and 2 along with MW and Carbon, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Heroes, Simpsons Hit & Run, all sorts. I'm glad that Cex still carries PS2 games just for the fact that everyone and their mother in the UK had one of these things when they were new.

My first 2 games were scorpion king and the almighty dark alliance (this game is freaking amazing!) I remember not having a memory card so I and some of my friends would just keep replaying the same missions over and over since we can't play for long because of curfew. They had a PS2 when it launched and I was even more blown away with how the games looked. I remember they had Tekken Tag and Timesplitters. They had a son who lived there who was a few years younger than me. I was always an extremely shy kid but I ended up playing the ps2 with him. I ended up staying the night there the same day I met all of them which was extremely unlike me but I was so in awe of the ps2 and didn’t want to leave. The kid that lived there ended up being my best friend growing up and I spent many nights there playing Ps2,Xbox, GameCube, and PC games. They had it all lol. I saw a lot of these back in the day in the houses of adults. For various reasons (quality, immersion, game catalog especially), this console appealed to many adults who otherwise weren’t “gamers.” That’s how you end up moving over 100 million units, I suppose.

Honestly, I have mad nostalgia for most consoles and handhelds between the NES and PS2 era. I grew up with most of 'em. Outside of the Gamecube, didn't have one of those at the time. But I gotta say, PS1, PS2, and Game Boy/GBC/GBA are probably my all-time favorites. Lately, I've been playing a TON of PS2 games through emulation. I still have a PS2 in a box somewhere, but I only have a few games for it nowadays. It's just easier and more convenient to emulate. As for some games I've been playing lately. I've been playing Enter the Matrix and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Plan to start some others at some point. Final Fantasy XII, one of the GTA games, God of War, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Manhunt, Max Payne...so many others. My emulator currently has about 165 games or so to choose from, and I'm still adding more here and there as I find 'em. --- I almost feel sorry for the other companies going against the PS2 at the time. The Dreamcast could have been great, but it died pretty quick. Still had some really good games, but didn't last as long as it could. The GameCube was amazing, but it's Nintendo, they're almost always gonna do well because of their exclusive games. But even then, I imagine it lost quite a good number of sales because of the PS2. And the original Xbox...I had it, I loved the thing. But it wasn't the PS2. It was technically more powerful, had the original version of Xbox Live, had games like Halo and Jet Set Radio Future, but....it wasn't PS2, and didn't sell nearly as good as the PS2 did. There's no way any of them could have competed with it when it comes to sheer number of sales. And that's not even entirely down to the games. A huge number of sales were made because it was a DVD player, and cheaper than a lot of other actual standalone DVD players at the time. Even if people didn't just up and buy it because it was a cheap DVD player, the fact that it WAS a DVD player was used as a good argument from kids to get one, or even by parents wanting to look for an 'excuse' to buy a game console. The DVD player aspect alone blew up the sales. Add to that that people could play all of their original PS1 games, and didn't have to start entirely from scratch with nothing to play. And then add to all that, that the PS2 WAS actually a really good console with a lot of good games... And yeah, there's no way the PS2 was gonna lose.

My step dad threw my psx up the wall and smashed it when I was 8 years old, the same day he went out and brought a ps2 out of guilt. Never felt so happy and sad at the same time. The reason? Mom said no to his sleepover plans. Gt3 and command and conquer were the first games I ever played on it, followed by ffx. To this day it remains on my TV stand with a see through cutout to watch the disk spin and network adapter with 500gb ide hdd... and it still works, and to my knowledge it was release day console and I'm very impressed that the laser hasn't given up yet. It's been over 20 years.

Having a PS2 now is an excellent idea. Still the best console that was ever produced for it's time. And the numbers show. No console has sold more units at launch, and no console has ever had such an impressive game library. But you dont even scratch the surface as to why you actually need one or what its capable of. You need a PS2 because it can can do so much more then what it was capable of 15 years ago. Not only is it the best console ever made by history with the largest game library. But you can now easily "Soft Mod" these consoles with little to no effort at all. Expanding its use 10s of times. You are able to purchase memory cards commercially that instantly turn your console into an expanded version of its self. Once you've obtained one of these memory cards, which by the way are dirt cheap, not even 10 dollars. Your PS2 becomes capable of loading from HDD. You can have a massive library ready to play at a moments notice. Without having to risk damaging your discs or more importantly your laser for reading discs. Then you can have the ability to synthesize higher resolutions for your games. Like I can force any game to become native widescreen aswell as being displayed in 1080p which is far above the output the console displays, but it works fine when you have a HDMI cable connected to the console. Then we have the ability to simply burn games directly from an original PS2 disc and write it straight to the HDD you've added to your console. But that's still not all we can do. What about emulation?? We can do that too. How about having the ability to emulate any console up to PS2 on your PS2. Can be done aswell. My PS2 has a massive library of games for Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, PS1 and N64. They all run flawlessly on the console, love playing some zelda on my PS2. This is still not even half the features available at your fingertips when you have a "Soft Modded" PS2. Theres still so much you can do, but I've already written a wall. If you have interest in what I'm describing. Your first step is to acquire a "Free Mcboot" ps2 memory card.

I found one at a flea market for $5 2 years ago. I had all of the cords already, the dude said it was broke so I decided to take a chance, especially considering it was in amazing condition. Just a little dusty. I opened it up and the thing looked like brand new. Plugged it in turned it on and I was surprised how quiet it was. Tested out an extremely scratched copy of FFX and it booted like new. Best $5 I ever spent. It's now hooked up with Component cables from HDRetroVision, an optical cable and I have 2 licensed controllers and memory cards in near new condition. I didn't realize they made basically every Guitar Hero/Rock Band game for this thing...needless to say I own almost all of them.

Cool video, but one point to add wrt DualShock 2 controllers; they were different to the PS1s DS1s in that the X, circle, square and triangle buttons have pressure sensitivity. This is best exampled in MGS2 where you can hold down square to pull the trigger, but if you release the button gently, you don't fire. Same for throwing distance also.
