What was my hottest take? Also a few things I wanted to note about the video! - I know there are Tingle games. I did not count those because they're about Tingle and don't really have anything to do with The Legend of Zelda at all. - There's a couple games where the aspect ratio on the footage will randomly have the tops and bottoms slightly cut off. That's from a compression error using Handbrake, the program got confused and I didn't realize until already deleting the original footage. So sorry about that! - I'm aware of the 3DS version of Four Swords as well, but didn't think it was really worth bringing up or playing since it doesn't have that much new content in it

yeah it's so strange! Just looking at the ranking I'm baffled from top to nearly bottom (nobody disagrees that the CD-I games are the worst). but his points are well reasoned and I don't hate it. I think it's great that Zelda's one of those franchises where pretty much every game is someone's favorite, while simultaneously being someone else's least favorite. It makes the franchise very resistant to turning into an echo chamber when it comes to discussion and you can't really be 'wrong' for liking or disliking a specific game.

It's clearer in the 3DS version, but the Clocktown Banker gives you a stamp that tells you how many rupees you have. It is funny because in every subsequent timeline, you never actually deposited the rupees there. So in a way, Link is just committing massive bank fraud.

Oracle of Ages is a great game. I admit that I have a massive amount of nostalgia for it because it was my 3rd video game, and my first Zelda game. I think Nathaniel's biggest complaint (having to play both games twice for the full story) is somewhat justified, but I just consider that a bonus thing is you really want to put in the hours. I've played both Seasons and Ages on their own and I never felt like either game was incomplete without the other

They led to the unofficial remasters that fix a lot of the problems, but kept the original cutscenes in tack. The same people behind those remasters also made a spiritual successor to those games that's actually good, and are now working on a Hotel Mario remaster.

my issue isnt botw being high, its some of the best being low, majoras mask, skyward sword, and especially majoras mask being so low is insane. i can get majoras mask bot being appealing, i used to find it annoying and stressful but now i love it, but twilight princess and skyward sword being so low because of "story bloat"? they are story focused games, of course a lot of time is dedicated to world building and character interaction. and totk being so high is a crime, he even pointed out the countless problems, but "oh, its wacky" so its near the top.

@@LordShrek13 Honestly I can agree with the SS and TP logic. Sure they're story focused, but honestly the story for both is kinda mess. TP spends so much time on characters like Ilya who are basically irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. And SS's story honestly makes much of what you do feels worse. I personally find it frustrating that you spend the first third of the game chasing after zelda as part of the "Goddess grand plan", meanwhile what you're doing is actually meaningless because Impa is there to protect Zelda, and you're basically just trailing her accomplishing nothing of substance. Even if you ignore this, the high stakes of needing to find Zelda no matter the cost also makes SS one of the worst zelda games in terms of suffering from Ludonarrative dissonance, despite it being something that Zelda games are usually good at managing (yes I am using this term despite how much of a meme it is in gaming discussion).

I’ve been waiting for this countdown for about 7 years now and this didn’t disappoint. As a true Legend of Zelda, I always appreciate new takes on the series. While yes, I was ready to pull out my rocket launcher when I saw the Majora’s Mask placements, I am not afraid to admit that. But at the very least, I found all your takes as understandable. Which is precisely why the Zelda community is one of the healthiest out there because everyone seems to actually find everything valid and respectable, not to mention everyone just being kind and respectful about everything. For zelda 2, you could get the temple item and skip all the temple. Then once you level up a lot you can go back and complete the temples to instantly level up in the higher xp levels

Minor correction regarding Ocarina of Time's reward for collecting 100 Gold Skulltullas: You can actually keep re-entering the home and get the 200 Rupees over and over again without limit. Similarly, if you collect the the 67 Poe Souls in Twilight Princess, you can re-enter the home to get a huge rupee over and over again without limit. Otherwise, good list; I got to learn about some Zelda games I didn't even know existed. Cheers!

In Breath of the Wild, I was surprised how realistic it is. In a game nowadays, there are realistic graphics but not realistic "logic" to say the better word. I was using a metal weapon in a thunderstorm, and when I first saw it, I didnt think much of it. Then I saw my equipment was static, and I immediately thought I needed to change my equipment before I get shocked. Another thing I really got annoyed at was the rain weather since I couldn't really climb anymore and the rain weather happened so much I just waited the weather to pass or just do literally anything else.

I know many people have problems with the touchscreen controls on the DS Zeldas, but It did actually never bother me at all even if I prefer buttoncontrols. And the times you have to replay the temple of the oceanking actually goes faster since the new items you get opens up new shortcuts.

I haven’t touched either in a hot minute now and while I’d be slightly more inclined to reach for BOTW at this point because it’s been longer since I’ve played that one, I just found TOTK more satisfying to play considering what all you can do with ultra hand and the weapon fusing. Plus with exploring the underground and sky I feel that TOTK is overall more substantial despite having the weaker story

I dunno, TotK felt very different from BotW, to the point where the differences in it make me prefer it. Yes, it reused the world of BotW, but not only have tons of areas changed (tons of new caves everywhere and areas like Typhlo Ruins, Gerudo Canyon or Death Mountain are completely different biomes now), it added the Depths and Sky, while also adding entirely new abilities and challenges everywhere. It's similar to AlbW in that regard and as someone that player BotW for well over 1000 hours, TotK felt pretty fresh despite of its similarities.

to be fair, the Ice Arrow mechanics in the original MM were also not well implemented. If you shot into the water too close to a wall, the ice patch just wouldn't spawn. Also, it was very hard to aim the arrows so that the patches would actually spawn where you wanted them to. So I can totally see why they changed that.

Upset by the MM ranking, but if you play on a ROM the community have done a ton of improvements (the randomizer is really cool). The best QOL thing to get is mapping the transformation masks and ocarina to the D pad, that stops a ton of menuing. Its truly one of the best Zelda games and deserves a faithfil remake (as in not ruining Zora like the 3DS version did).

To me, I will always love the CD-i cutscenes because of the countless KZbin Poops that have spawned. Somehow those characters, while bad in the context of the game, have become timeless in the context of YTPs.

Finally someone who doesn’t overrate Majora’s Mask! I actually played it before OOT and initially liked it, but after playing OOT I grew resentful towards it. Everything seems like a rehash by comparison and a lot of the game ends up feeling like filler. The dungeons (minus stone tower) are much weaker and they subtracted several items to make room for the masks. I don’t mind the time limit, but this was clearly a rushed game, and it shows.

As someone who DID play all the Zelda games growing up, I completely agree with the MM take. It has a great theme and story, however I felt the gameplay and mechanics were super clunky and very challenging to understand growing up. Even as an adult if I replay MM I play the 3DS version, I don't like the N64 version at all. The rest of the list is pretty solid coming from a non fan growing up.

Video games may suffer from zeitgeist more than other art forms, especially if you only play them for fun and not take in something like story. There’s also something to be said about being around for each Zelda during their progression through gaming technology and culture, rather than playing through all the Zelda’s for the first time today. One example you mention Twilight princess and OoT having empty hyrule fields. When we were growing up playing these games, they didn’t feel empty at all, especially OoT as the entire game was mind blowing to everyone at the time. But I can easily see why someone playing them today would say that as it’s very hard to factor in this many years later and therefore affects enjoyment. Unfortunately it is what it is. Your list and video is epic and a great way for old school Zelda people like myself to see where someone who didn’t grow up playing them ranks them. And it’s not because you don’t have biases that makes that interesting but more it’s interesting to see what someone who hasnt played many zeldas before thinks about all these old games that I hold so highly. It’s a window into what new generations will think of them.

This rules honestly. Most of my rankings would be WILDLY different but it's so much more interesting to see this series through the eyes of someone who has had a super different experience. I've seen plenty of lists over the last decade plus where the rankings are pretty much the same as mine and everyone else's, so it was super fun/funny to me to be eyebrows-raised and mouth-agape at nearly every pick haha. I did think it was interesting that TOTK made it so high despite all the criticism, but it made sense because there's just so much content in that game and criticism of it takes a bit more explaining. To me it doesn't feel like a sequel or "$70 DLC" like everyone was saying; it just feels like Breath of the Wild: The Remix. Basically every mechanic/aspect from BOTW comes back but just remixed in a different way (shrines, map-unlocking towers, terminal-puzzle dungeons, time ability, grabby ability, etc.), then added a bunch of extra items that kinda just clutter the inventory, and then made the menus harder to use. And like you said, nobody even recognizes Link, so it feels like they just wanted to make BOTW again, just bigger and better, but didn't quite fill both of those quotas (certainly bigger, but definitely not better imo).

Man, people are attacking this man over the Majora’s Mask placement, but honestly, I actually kinda agree with him on the points he made about the game. Like, the time mechanic is great and I love the story and how emotional and dark it is, but because most of the time you’re just playing a bunch of side quests, it’s really annoying having to be on a certain day and wait until it gets to the right time to actually do it. Plus, even when you do slow down time, you’re still on a timer the entire time and I don’t really like having the pressure of having to do something quickly. That’s why I think Ocarina of Time is the better game because I can go at my own pace and I just felt more invested in the story even if it’s not as dark and unique as Majora’s Mask. Plus, I just love the gameplay and structuring of OOT more too.

I don’t know if I have ever seen a Zelda list I disagree with more, but that doesn’t matter at the end of the day. It is interesting to see someone new to the series perspective on each game and I liked hearing your reasons, even if I skimmed through certain parts. Even though totk is controversial I will always love the game above all the rest as it was the first Zelda game I properly played and beat and it has made me love the series even though some of the games and challenges can be very annoying. p.s. so far I have started and beat totk, botw and echoes of wisdom but have started oot on the gamecube, wind waker, skyward sword hd, oos, links awakening and twilight princess hd.

I would have loved to see the DS Zelda games remade for the Wii U because it would be the only time this touch-based game with 2 screens could have made it on a home console. Maybe they could have kept WindWaker HD's engine, while switching to touch controls for some actions that worked best.
