Please leave it original colour, I can’t wait to see what you do with it I wish I could go forward in time and binge watch everything lol, the M5 too, I’m an E60 owner (528 though) that’s how I found both you and Dean’s channels, keep up the good work!

It’s a tough call. Personally that’s just too rusty, I’d repaint in the original color. That said there’s something about these small classic BMWs that’s just awesome.

That thing runs great! Thanks for taking us on the drive! I was laughing after you mentioned the square tires lol...My advice would be to do a “functional restoration” on it...replace things which are essential to it being a car which can be driven and enjoyed, and leave the paint and body, at least for now...Always remember, they’re only original once, and the patina on it adds to the overall survivor story of the car...It’s a true survivor, and there are many, myself included, who can appreciate a vehicle which has persisted, despite what time and nature have dealt out ;)

Hi, I restored a 2002 auto UK model a couple of years ago. I bought a book by Mike McCartney from Jaymic in UK , near Cromer. A great guide for restoring these cars from a chap who restored quite a few. Check for corrosion everywhere. I found rust in both sides of the A posts when I took the wings off, I think you call them fenders. Repaint it in the original colour, it’s a lot easier and cheaper. Best of luck.

Very nice old Bmw!! I have a 1979 E21 that will need 2 tires, the original tires have an inner tube, I wonder if I’ll need to buy inner tubes with the new tires, let me know how yours go!

Great vid, Nathan, glad to see her running. If it were me, I'd give it new paint in the original color and then do everything else that you mentioned (chrome refresh, interior, etc.). Looking forward to seeing a test drive on new tires. Take care!

I’ve owned and driven 02’s for the past 30 years. Absolutely awesome cars. Cool rating of over 1000 Megafonzies! Worth remembering it’ll only ever be original once! It took half a century to look this way.

One of the biggest regrets I have with cars was selling my 75 2002...it was my highschool project car about 15 years ago....and I sold it to pay for a semester of college. Lol...would've much rather kept the car!

With those out of round tires I'll bet you might have nylon cord tires. My first car in college was a 1962 Buick Special wagon with nylon tires, and if it sat for more than a few days it felt like the tires were square until they warmed up after a few miles. That 1602 deserves a nice set of Michelin ZXs, or Conti radials. You should still be able to find them at vintage tire suppliers like Coker Tire. Great project! My oldest is an E30 vert.

1602 needs new tires and brakes overhauled badly. Then you should just drive it all the time...that car needs the road after all those years sitting. Keep it for some time. Repaint in original color, obviously. Keep it pure original. It will sell good. I'm not so excited for M5, but I still watch them too. Keep up the spirit!

It's good to see it on the road. Have you checked out the video on Jay Leno's Garage about a mostly original 1967 1600. He said it has had some paint but was otherwise original. It's owned by a woman who collects and drives vintage BMWs.

I love old BMW's (almost all BMW's really). What to do with it depends on what you want out of it. Want the most re-sale value, keep it original. Want it to be pretty and enjoy it, but still keep good value, paint it original color. Want it to be something you look at and get aroused, but lose some value, color change it. Which path you take is dependent on your goals. I can not stand "patina" personally (painted an e30 because of it) and would want it to be as nice visually as possible. Good luck with it whichever route you choose, I'll be a viewer either way.

Great video as usual, I really enjoy these 02-cars. How and when did you find the 1802 in Sweden? I live in southern Sweden and have been keeping an eye out for these cars for the past year or so but I think I have not come across the one you are talking about. Last week a really nice original 2002 was listed (and sold I think) for 80 000 Swedish kronas, which is around $8000 as of today.

Originality pays more, Nathan. Don't paint it, just improve the rustproofing, the mechanical parts and the engine. Don't touch it otherwise. That would be my advice, Sir.

My first car was a 1602, with a 2 litre engine. It was a '70 car with the round tail lights and a factory installed foldable vinyl insert in the roof. Fixed it up and on my first drive out an idiot rear ended me and totaled it.

I dig the 1600. If mine, I would do a repaint same color as you described. I would also think it would be cool to see the engine worked over some. Does anyone make performance cams for it? Is there an ITB set up? Something period correct performance-wise would be interesting to see...old-school Petrolicious style build.
@NathansBMWWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
They make ITB'S but they are expensive around $2k

I’d try to track down a nice 2800cs or 3.0cs, or a Bavaria for the next one. I would not do a frame off on the 1600; either repaint it the original color or preserve it as is. They are only original once!

The 1968,1600-2002, is awesome, if the car does not have any rust, I would keep it as original as possible, there are so many new waxes & paint preservers, a car like this is very popular, the car came out until 1976 or 1977, only to be replaced by the 3 series, these cars are so easy to work on, parts are available, they even have a DVD, where you can get basically almost if not anything, the hatchback you are vfc referring is the 1600/2002 ,touring or GT, but what would be awesome, unique, is if you could get the 2002 Turbo, which was alpine white with red & blue stripes, you do not see many of those.
