There are some twenty different ORP menus, together with vegetarian, halal and kosher variants. All are designed to be eaten within a 24 hour period. The ration, whatever the menu, is divided into three meals; Breakfast, lunch and the evening meal. The drinks or sundries are extensive and cover most tastes. All to be eaten whilst in the field. You also get a solid fuel cooker and use your mess tins or Crusader Cup to boil water and at the same time heat up the appropriate meal. The meals can be eaten cold, depending on the tactical situation. Sausage and beans - no toast! Tea is made with boiling water NOT hot water! Apple Turnover is a dessert in UK! The beans are kidney beans and you are correct, if you want to add the heat, put in the hot sauce. You could also pack your own chilli powder or another condiment to add to the flavour. The casserole is a posh name for stew! The biscuits are oat biscuits not digestive, or crackers (same language but different meaning). These can be soaked in hot water with creamer to make a weak porridge, or eaten with peanut butter/liquid cheese. The cereal bar can be eaten as an alternative to sausage and beans at breakfast or as a snack. These oat biscuits can be eaten as a snack with nuts etc during the day with a "wet" ( Royal Marine parlance for a drink) of tea. The chocolate drink is for at the end of the day. The peanut brittle bar is to be bitten off in small pieces not divided with a knife. As an afterthought, you only go to do No:2s every third day! When you "go" you have to stop what you are doing and go! No question!! I am making observations as a person who has been in the British military since 1966 in one form or another. Eating these ration packs develops into an art form. You learn by experience which are the ones to have and the ones to avoid. How to enhance the ORPs with little extras to make your day more pleasant. By the way, if you like hot sauce try Econa Hot Pepper Sauce - It will definitely be a "ring stinger!!"

$12 to eat for a day is a pretty good price, I'd buy 24 hour rations if I had the money and was less picky with what I eat. I've only had two US mres which were great. The pork patty which was like immatation ribs or something and that potato hash with onions peppers and bacon. Both were eleven dollars so you got three times as much for an extra dollar. Good deal

I like these MRE mains. These are more practical than canned food. Specialy when going on a hike or a cycling trip. I have a few US and Brittish rations, and I will combine the two when I will go on a cycling trip. Th US FRH is wery usefull, and the First Strike bars are nice. But the Brittish mains are much better then US ones! I think the turnovers are identical.

Thing that concerns me the most about the MRE reviews, is that it's a lot of preservatives in general that is consumed... I can't make any assertive claims, but there just seems to be a lot of evidence about the negative effects it tends to have in the digestive system. In any case, super love and appreciate each upload. And in the event I am not completely ignorant in regards to the health claims, just wishing you the very best health as you continue with your much appreciated work!
@skeetersaurus62495 жыл бұрын
You have to understand one thing about the history and development of MREs, decades went into making a COMBAT ration which would last, possibly for YEARS, in the quartermaster supply system, which could endure HIGH temperatures (environmentally), and yet supply individual troops sufficient vitamins, calories and nutrients to CONTINUE FIGHTING without possible re-supply for DAYS! These aren't 'Hormel Compleats' or a jar of pickled olives...the older U.S. MREs smelled almost 'metallic, medicinal' and tasted as bad...even older C-rations were not 'fortified', often changed color and flavor through years (sometimes DECADES of supply storage)...I once ate a C-Ration (1984) that was packaged in 1957!!! So...when you say, "they are filled with preservatives", the answer to that is YES, and crap-loads of Sodium, Potassium and Protein, as well as an overdose of Carbs. They aren't meant for FAT-BODIES on a couch...they are meant for two meals a day (or this 24-hour pack, for example) to keep you from starving in days of combat without a mess-chow hall service, or 'in-field tray-rats' being served. FYI...the U.S. Troops are supposed to receive two MREs a day, PLUS a 'tray-rat' served in-field DAILY while 'in-garrison' or 'training deployment' to the field...no more than 10-days of MREs are to be served before a minimum of 3-days 'Mess-tray-rats' are to be served to 'normalize the individual troop'...in other words, DON'T LIVE ON THESE...THEY WILL MESS YOU UP! I retired after 21-years in the Marines...and have a BIT of experience with 'field rations' of about all-types... (oh, and NEVER FORGET, due to high salt levels and 'often dehydrated rations', make SURE to INCREASE YOUR WATER INTAKE SIGNIFICANTLY, or you will become a CONSTIPATION CASUALTY!!! I kid you not...doc will be shoving a hose where the SUN DON'T SHINE to fix you, should you overlook this small detail!

British combat rations are starting to look more American with the exception that they are 24 hour rations. Our MREs we can make them 24 hour rations by stripping them and taking what we like to eat and combining them together. I one day have to try the British hot sauce and have my verdict on that. I have always carried Tabasco Sauce in the field or in combat. Frank's have become one of my favorite hot sauces since Iraq. Since I have retired and no longer a real soldier anymore. On road trips in my part of the United States I always have both bottles of Tabasco and Frank's.

The guys that make the hot sauce sell it for a pretty reasonable price on their website. I think they ship abroad too. It is deceptively hot though (50k-100k scoville, compared to tabsco at about 8k)
