This year's National Dairy Conference takes place on Wednesday, 27th November in Limerick Racecourse. The theme of the conference is Robust Dairy Farming for Future Challenges.
Dr. Joe Patton, Teagasc Head of Knowledge Transfer, Teagasc outlines how our programme this year features a range of presentations and practical workshops aimed at addressing these challenges that are facing dairy farmers in today's climate, including water quality, pasture production, costs of production, and also animal health.
Dr. Aine Murray, Teagasc Researcher outlines how she will be joined by Donal Patton of Teagasc Ballyhaise and Michael Carroll, dairy farmer, where they will be discussing are grazing targets still achievable on farms after a difficult year?. Aine will be going through the different grazing targets during the different time points of the year and how they are still achievable, while Donal Patton then will discuss how we can utilise grass better on farms during difficult grazing situations. Michael Carroll will give his own perspective of how he implemented different grazing targets during a difficult spring on his own dairy farm.
Stuart Childs, Teagasc Dairy Specialist explains that in the afternoon, there will be six workshops of which attendees will choose three. People can choose from: how to reduce TB risk in your herd; ensure you meet your herd's requirements for the winter and through into next spring; hear the lessons learned in 2024 from the Clover 150 programme; how to control dairy production costs in 2025; how to successfully use sexed semen to maximise genetic gain and improved calf crop without impacting on fertility KPIs; and how best to manage young calves to facilitate an easier spring of calf rearing on your farm.
