I get asked this all the time! 👇🏻
👉🏻what’s the difference between the National Guard and the Army Reserve? In the simplistic form: we are both reserve components (Part-time) of the Army. The Army Reserve is federally funded and the National Guard is both federally and state funded.
National Guards main mission is to its respective state, FIRST!

National Guard is bigger than every branch or discipline and is the Force. Reserves are simply Support to the Active Component

Yup. 👍 Army Guard is over 40% of the Army total force. Air Guard is 37% of the total Air (& space) force.

The United States Army Active Duty and Reserve are run by the federal government and the president. The United States Army National Guard is the state side run by the governor of that state. If the federal government oversteps, it is up to the state/governor to decide which side of the fence the National Guard stands on (Minutemen). It is also the National Guards job to deal with disasters within the United States over the federal government. The National Guard IS the well-regulated state militia. The governor of the state is the one who determines whether to obey, or disobey, orders given by the federal government. We get paid by the state, for orders coming from our governor, we get paid by the federal government, for deploying and taking orders from the president. You do not gain benefits from both sides, unless you have taken part in both sides, you don't automatically get both. -National Guard Infantryman

The President can just Federalize the National Guard and send them where needed. - Air National Guard Medic.

But if you want to switch to active duty from the national guard, it’ll be a pain in the ass to do so. Not only you’ll have get permission granted by the Federal Government, but you’ll need permission from your state governor as well. So, that’s why I choose the Army Reserves, so when I finish college I can easily switch to full time.

I am not a recruiter, but i have done my ASVAB and am a few weeks out from (hopefully) getting medical clearance and have done a ton of research and have talked to both branches. This video pretty much sums it up well from my perspective. There are some things the reserve get vs National Guard. But if you are looking at say tuition reimbursement, go National Guard as you can pull from both Federal and state funding and you get the same Federal funding a reservist would.

@@matt59fireThe president does not have power over the National Guard, only the governor of that state has power. It's if the governor agrees to the federal orders. Most States have their own regulations and policies for their State TA, of course they want the money to go back to their respective state. If you want to go to an out of state school, you have the option to use your CH1606 GI Bill and Federal Tuition Assistance, if eligible. You also have the option to do an interstate transfer. If you're in the guard and need help deciding which benefits to use contact your State Education Office.
