Adventurous rock music from the punk era (meaning people proud that they could not play instruments and thought that spitting on the 'audience' was the ultimate musical statement - pfffleaseee!). I'm so glad there is diversity in human minds and hearts because that could have been the end of creativity and substance in music. For more music like this check out early Robert Wyatt, early Gong, Gilgamesh, Alan Gowen, Phil Miller, Hatfield and The North, Egg, Pichio Dal Pozzo, early Hugh Hopper, early and mid-70s Carla Bley, Kew Rhone album, Soft Machine, Camel, Caravan, early Aksak Maboul, Henry Cow, Bruford, etc. etc.

This is why back in the day album covers had the names of band members...going through the record bins was always a voyage of discovery. Canterbury, really a modern term for this music, was not a genre yet. So here in the states, the import bins where usually a big mix of everything. The bands kept changing, so we had to look for the musicians on album covers to follow our favorites. In those days, there were very few people who enjoyed these albums and it was your own world as it was tough to share. Today, "Canterbury" is finally being discovered and although many of them are gone now, it is very nice to see them gaining a larger audience and the accolades so richly deserved. Some of them have websites...so check them out and buy their music.

Interesting comment, I’d still consider most Canterbury/Jazz-Prog albums to be quite obscure today and definitely more for people of esoteric taste but objectively speaking most of it is some of the most technical and at times experimental music since late 60s - early 70s Zappa material. To me the obscurity of most of these Canterbury albums adds to their charm and it’s cool to hear that it did even more so back when they came out in the 70s.
@awaken772 жыл бұрын
It is not a genre, it is kind of artificial cliche. Journalists took few bands and labeled as "canterbury", as well as other side projects and collaborations of musicians from these bands. Some of them never lived in Canterbury . p.s. isnt Camel a canterbury band then? :-) Richard Sinclair and Dave Sinclair of Caravan played in it.
@orbpulsargd26082 жыл бұрын
Although early Camel has a "hint" of Canterbury sound, they are rather a symphonic prog band than a Canterbury band.

Not to diss on the rest of Dave Stewart's work, but this is what I think to be his peak. Or really, the peak of the powers of everyone who were in the band at the time. I mean, goddamn, everyone gets a stellar moment on this record. -Dave's eerie, almost ominous keyboards on the intro to the first track already set the mood -Pip's drumming on The Collapso is otherwordly -It'd be a crime if I didn't talk about John Greaves' bassline in Squarer for Maud, let alone his writing -Phil's rythm guitar on Dreams Wide Awake, and his solo on the outro to Binoculars are both tear jerkers And of course, there's the ending, where everybody reunites to give the album the closer it deserves. It's a shame this band never got more attention, or that there are no live performances recorded except bootlegs here and there, and maybe the Old Grey Whistle Test performance of "The Collapso".

There is a live album, "Playtime", which featured Alan Gowan on keys - please check out his band, Gilgamesh. I had a chance to see them during this period (1979?) at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, but left the festivities as I thought they were never going to play - it was after midnight and other commitments needed to be considered for the following day. I will always regret this decision. With respect to musicians being at their peak, let me say that after having read Dave Stewart's account of NH's misadventures, it is totally understandable that he would strike off in a new and, hopefully, more profitable direction. With respect to Phil Miller (RIP), I believe that he really took off as a guitarist, song writer and band leader after he left NH. Pip Pyle (RIP) and John Greaves were also fantastic.

@@martinrodzzz5329 he also had a band with Pip Pyle around the nineties called In Cahoots that I saw in London on the same bill as Caravan. Spent a bit of the evening with Gilli from Gong, they were both fuckin brilliant as you'd expect.

I seem to remember Phil Miller plays a similar kind of solo on Robert Wyatt's Rockbottom album...another classic!

National Health, Egg, Curved Air, early Strawbs, Hatfield & The North and Igginbottom were the best, but I love them all.

Dave stewart has to be in the top 5 most technically gifted keyboardists. Its no wonder that quite lot of the work he's done is how should I put it, very difficult to play.

Dave stewart and kerry minnear are my 2 favorite keyboardists of all time and easily both are geniuses that are obscenely criminally underrated.

@@1359401, add Patrick Moraz and there you have three keyboard gods that are obscenely underrated
