Great looking track. I rode BMX years ago in the early 80s and eventually transitioned into Motocross but I had so much fun on my old Mongoose. Great memories.

Great riders. Awesome competition. It’s interesting that the showboaters who get the most air never win. I downhill mountain bike for fun - and get as much air as I can on a gravity jump trail. I was however a very competitive alpine skier back in the day. And elite alpine racers know, all else equal, you try to scrub jumps as much as possible, you stay as low as possible and in the air as little as possible. Cause staying in contact with the snow is always faster. Counterintuitive to neophytes. The BMX winners in this vid time their takeoffs and landings exquisitely. And of course take advantage of pumping with almost 100% efficiency. Great stuff. I’ve never ridden BMX but would love to give it a go. A local municipality is putting in a professional hard surface pump track. I was going to use my mountain bike for practice. But maybe I’ll look for a used BMX bike.

Beautiful track. This is what BMX should be! Long gaps & doubles, not these easy roller tracks where the back wheel doesnt leave the ground. Reminds me of the great 80s tracks i raced-jumps over water hazards,triples, and big step-ups= lots of big air!!!

I raced in the early 80s during the initial wave of BMX popularity that began to die out in 1985-86. Berms were dirt, not cement, back then. A stem was called a 'gooseneck'. I had a PK Ripper. No-one liked 26" cruisers because they looked 'weird' to us short guys. (They look like a more suitable bike for me today, at 6'2".) I was never a sponsored rider, but I knew a guy who raced for JMC. I just sold my _Cook Bros Racing_ cranks (in 2020) for $2500. My gear ratio was 45/16, but I knew a guy who went with 48/13 to strengthen his legs. That's probably all it would do. Not practical for winning a race.

What gear ratios do they ride these days?
@kairiviere4 жыл бұрын
modvs1 between 43 - 45/16 on 20” bikes. 24” Cruisers are far more varied but the roll out (distance travelled in one full crank revolution) is anything between 53” & 55”, but 41/18 & 38/17 are very popular.
@slothitwonder10153 жыл бұрын
RaceDayVideo 41/18 sounds like a low ratio, but I don’t know how that works on a track like this, I raced bmx from ‘84 - 2001. I ran with 39/15 or 42/16 the majority of my racing days depending on the track. But I never raced on a track with a tall starting hill. Watching these guys crank as fast as they do, it’s hard not to imagine how the cranks don’t fall off the bikes
@kairiviere3 жыл бұрын
Slot Hit Wonder 39/15 & 42/16 on a 20” are both lower/easier gears than 41/18 on a cruiser
