hey, sysadmin and self proclaimed nerd here a lot of what you said about compression and storage isn't entirely correct. for compression, there are two types: lossless compression and lossy compression. lossless compression is like taking that couch you were talking about, and removing the empty air around it until it fits into a box smaller than itself. when you unpack it, you still get everything back, but you saved space. lossy compression takes the same couch and removes the little details that won't be easily spotted. (the analogy doesn't work too well here lol) for the storage, while yes, the actual storage capacity has been increasing for very long now, in datacenters they're struggling to make hard drives with more than 30tb. that sounds like a lot, but when upgrading storage you either have to build more datacenters, which takes a lot of space, costs money, and requires more electricity, or you discard thousands of drives and replace them with new drives. that's not very realistic and the capacity increases lately haven't been making this very viable. what they are doing though, is working with a ton of other companies like samsung, microsoft, netflix, intel, apple, amazon and more to develop better video compression algorithms, like AV1, which is what google is using for more and more of their videos. interesting video, but you might want to fact check some things.

Moore's "Law" has been dying for a while, though. Diminishing returns since the mid-2010s means the industry has been lagging behind expectations for a little while now. Modern transistor designs are bumping up against hard limits of the laws of physics. Invoking Moore's Law (which is sorta on its way out) as justification for KZbin's indefinite expansion feels a little bit off base, IMO. Either way, I love your videos Nationsquid!
@DoubleD20sКүн бұрын
Yes, I was coming here to say that about Moore's Law. However, I too still love this and all his other videos.
@QuouarКүн бұрын
Also came here to say this. One potential solution might be quantum computing, but it's unclear how far in the future that is. There's also the general challenge data centres pose politically and economically - they are immensely resource heavy, and a not insignificant driver of climate change. There's increasing political pushback against new datacentres, raising the question of, if quantum computing isn't an option, where this data is meant to be stored. It's an interesting problem, but I agree that the ending of the video felt a little too rose-tinted for me.

@nationsquid. "That's because KZbin does not keep a backup of deleted videos" I need to correct you on this. Not only do they keep a backup, but they can also restore them even years after you deleted them. I had a old youtube channel back in 2008 that was deleted for copyright infringement. After being denied 6 times to get my channel back stating it was "permanent" by youtube/google. I finally got it back in 2016 after i sent them an apology email. Not only where all my videos back but even the ones i deleted myself back in 2008. I was stunned by the fact that they held on to these videos for so long even though my account was "Permanently Suspended"
@Austin989891080p10 сағат бұрын
Also forgot the main reason i wanted the channel back anyway was because i had videos that my brother took of his 16th birthday party. It was the only video or pic of the event. Needless to say i now have a hard copy thanks to KZbin never deleting anything
@БранимирПетровКүн бұрын
Your description of media compression is more wrong than right. Lossless compression is quite similar in concept to deduplication. which is an algorythm used in backup and storage devices to (you guessed it) - remove duplicate information blocks, and replace them with pointers. In this way, you can achieve even 99+% used space reduction, depending on the type of data.

As a professional in high end video production myself, I rather compare compression with a waiter. Let’s say you order one cheeseburger and two fries with ketchup: The waiter writes down: “one cheeseburger, two French fries with ketchup”. That’s uncompressed. The waiter wants to decrease the space needed on the notepad and instead writes “1 cb, 2 fr w/ ketchup”. That’s compressed. Of course you can compress it even further but then you will lose information and so it is harder for one to figure out what the message means. For instance “1c 2fk”. That’s comparable with those home videos that are shared and reshared, every time adding more and more compression due to re-uploads. Now, as you shorten “cheeseburger” to “cb”, your colleague would shorten it to “chb”. That’s how different formats like H.264, DNxHD, XAVC and all in principal work.

While we're on the subject, this is why CCTV and home surveillance equipment is so poor looking, and how "ghost" artifacts happen. In order to make space to run 24/7, they utilize lossy compression so they overwrite parts of image to save on data. It's low res and choppy, but that's the trade off for constantly running. I just had to mention that since most people can't understand why that happens.
@lutello3012Күн бұрын
I always wanted to know more about the actual storage KZbin uses. How big are the individual hard drives? Are they using SSD now? What is the environmental impact while some people complain that not every video is in 4k? (And not a good 4K. Save that for BRD/P2P and do it right.)

@defamatt23 сағат бұрын
also, on a side note: yt always keeps the original video but doesn't allow users to stream it. for example there is a 1080p video uploaded in 2005 but 1080p wasnt supported until late 2009... the original video was kept in yt servers while only making the 480p version available; when 1080p was introduced, it was re-encoded...

With 4k screens becoming common and 8k now being sold, 1080p just looks terrible, especially when youtube highly compress it. If 8k streams are available I'll stream them for the higher bit rate, I've streamed a few and they look noticeably better than 4k on a 43" monitor. Plus I hate 24/30fps and prefer 60fps.

One thing to keep in mind, there is a physical limit to how small a physical object can be, known as the Planck Length. This limit is unfathomably small, to put it lightly, so it'll take a very very long time before we even start to get close to that limit. However, this limit is many many times smaller than an atom, making the practical limit much bigger than that. We're still a long way from hitting the practical limit, but it is something to keep in mind.
