My dog has this...it's spread to NJ State as well (although NJ State Dept. has yet to acknowledge it). My dogs about 8 weeks into this illness and beginning to sound better at this point but was very worried a few weeks ago because I wasn't sure how bad it would get. Yes, he went to 2 different vets with no answers (I actually advised them of this mysterious illness). At this point assume this is ALL States not just the ones reporting.

My furry bb just healed from pnuemonia and was hospitalized for 5 days with contious antibiotic at home for 10 days..

My newf has had this since July. Its terrible. She's been treated with Clavamox, Enro and doxycycline. She developed advanced pneumonia and was on O2 and almost died. It is horrible. She recovered in October after three months of meds but now it has come back and she's on doxy again. We have had many people tell us that it just kennel cough. It is not. It's basically covid for dogs. If you have a dog that starts coughing, please, please take it serious immediately. It is a very fast progressing illness and the dog needs doxycycline immediately. Prayers for all dogs who are suffering through this.

My daughter’s Westies had something similar in late summer. Her vet actually called-in antibiotics, because many dog owners in Wetumpka and Prattville were making vet visits w/ the same symptoms. Vets were scrambling to see every patient. Her two dogs had a horrible cough w/ gagging. It took both dogs, w/ antibiotics, about a month to recover. Like the respiratory illness report, their infection was highly contagious.

The dogs with this out in Kern County are testing positive for Streptococcus Zooepidemicus or "Strep Zoo."

I also watched a vet video about a dog that after multiple failed treatments and 9 days on oxygen was given an older antibiotic called Chloramphenicol and it worked! Hopefully this saves someone's else's dog

Best defense is a healthy immune system and avoid dog parks, and doggy daycare.

And, a healthy immune system for a dog can only occur in one that is on a high protein, species appropriate fresh diet that is low carb. It needs to be balanced and not only will it supply adequate nutrition it will also foster a species appropriate GI microflora. Dogs fed naturally have a much better chance fighting this disease. Additionally, dogs should not be over-vaccinated with unnecessary boosters.
