PLEASE go back. This was fascinating particularly the native American section. Unusual to find them buried with others at that time in history. My great x 2 grandfather was Native American so i love seeing this cemetery. I would love to see the inside of that church. If only those walls could talk. PLEASE GO BACK. My gr grandmother was 1/2 Lower Creek Native American. The black hair, high cheek bones, etc are seen today in our family. She was from southeast Ga.

Between now and then, perhaps you can locate whoever has the keys to the church so that you can meet up with them and get access to the inside when you return. Robert, this is a *MUST* ... you've got to get back out there and see ALL of the beauty this old cemetery and church has to offer! My mother's (entire side of the family) are Native American (Cherokee and Navajo). I have a great love for ALL Native American tribes and just as much respect in my heart for them too. I would absolutely love to see more of this cemetery and pay respects to not only the Native American Indians but to the former slaves as well....they all, each and every person buried there, deserves our love and respect as well!! The restoration project in your video showed us how much progress has been made over the last two months. Robert, Thank you for your video of Shiloh Marion Baptist Church and the nearby Church Hill Cemetery in Marian County near Preston, GA. My Great Great Grandfather, Robert Franklin (Frank) Shierling (1844-1868), is buried there along with other members of the Shierling Family and members of his wife's Family, the Josseys. Frank Shierling was a Confederate soldier from 1861-1865, who died within 3 years of returning home from battle-related injuries, leaving a widow (Sarah Rebecca Jossey) and a 6-week old baby (my Great Grandfather, Emmett Lee Shierling, Sr. [1868-1945]). Two of his older brothers (James Anderson Shierling and Brant W. Shierling) died in Virginia during the Civil War. His younger brother Wiley Dorse Shierling (1846-1897) also was a Confederate soldier who returned home to Church Hill after the war and is buried in this cemetery. To say that the Church Hill Community -- like the rest of the South -- was devastated by the Civil War is an understatement. I am grateful to the members of the Shiloh Marian Baptist Church who keep this church going and who maintain this beautiful old cemetery so well. Your video has reminded me to send them a donation to the church for their ongoing efforts, and I will also contribute to Sidestep Adventures for your impressive work in remembering these often forgotten and neglected parts of our not-so-distant past. I love looking at this church and the two cemeteries. I do know from Ancestry.com my family some of them came from the Clinch Mountains in Tennessee and they were a private mountain folk that did not mix with strangers and thus intermarried. This was way way back. Cherokee Indians mixed with my ancestors too. To me it is so interesting that people who lived at a time when there were not many people still led normal lives. Made families and lived free. This is so wonderful all the history that goes into the making of our nation.

One of my two families cemeteries have Indians in it. Their graves only are marked with a sand stone at each end of them. I also had a friend show me a Indian burial mound in the woods. I wish I knew more about them but The American Indians Strongly believed in LEAVING THE EARTH AS THEY FOUND IT.

Back then that church would have served as a schoolhouse and meeting hall for the townspeople. I can almost see the comings and goings of daily life. Fascinating!

wow real cool place I live in north ga and I have a grand farther buried some were in south Ga and i cant find him my grand mother has pass on so no one know were to find him his name was sandy hicks and was buried around 1937 I wish I could find him . thanks for the video and thanks for all the hard work. god bless.

You ought to check out Little Ogeechee Baptist in Oliver, GA. Very rich in history. Many of my ancestors are buried there. My family told me as I was growing up that the church was used by Sherman as a stable on his March to the sea. Church has been around since the early/mid 1800 but the formation of the congregation was late 1700s. Use to have family reunions there. Remember going through the cemetery and looking at all the historical grave. Thought that would be an interesting place to go check out. Just found your channel and love it. Keep it up.

Loved it! Two of our children were born in Ft.Gordon and we kind of consider Georgia our second home. We used to travel out into the country, looking for historic sites. I was wild and amazing in early 60's and our children never forget it. You bring back memories! Thank you!

Read that there is a path in the woods behind this church that leads to the baptismal pool with two springs and if you get back there again (hope you do) I hope you'll show that pool and those two springs in the woods!

Still the original style, sometimes you have to just do what you have to do to preserve the building. My grandparents house is like that it's in rural ky. We've had to replace a few boards here and there, but the house was built in the 30s. And still looks the same as it was before my dad was born.

loved the rock tombs. i think native americans made them to protect their dead from being dug up by scavengers but im not entirely sure

Native Americans believed being buried in the ground trapped their spirit. So being buried on top or on poles their spirit would fly freely
